The relevance of this study is due to the increasing man-made stress on water bodies and the land resources connected with them within the urbanized territories, as a result, changes in the morphology and dynamics of river channels and floodplain. It leads to the need for an integrated environmental assessment of floodplain-riverbed complexes, especially small rivers within urbanized areas. The purpose of the study is an integrated environmental assessment of floodplain-channel complexes of small rivers in the city of Novosibirsk to substantiate the recommendations of engineering measures to reduce environmental tensions. The research results showed that the Yeltsovka and the Plyushchikha rivers belong to the group with weak environmental intensity, the Tula, the Yeltsovka-2, the Kamenka, the Kamyshenka are of medium environmental intensity, the Yeltsovka-1 is with strong environmental tension. Significance of the study is that the integral assessment of the floodplain-channel complex of small rivers in the city of Novosibirsk can be used to substantiate the recommendations of engineering measures to reduce environmental tensions, which should be selected based on the obtained integral points, as well as to prevent accidents at various facilities or communications during engineering construction or water engineering design, construction and operation.

The latest special studies of the genus Synura in Russia were conducted in the 1970s. In the last decade, 14 new species of the genus were described based on molecular and morphological data. The total number of valid taxa of the genus has increased to 49. Only 18 taxa of Synura are known in Russia up to date, and the diver sity of the genus on this huge territory is strongly underestimated. Previous studies of the genus were focused mainly on large lakes or reservoirs. To reveal a more complete flora, it is necessary to include other habitats into account. Small urban rivers can be prospective habitats for interesting taxa including synuralean algae. Our study focuses on the taxonomic composition of the genus Synura in four small rivers in Nizhniy Novgorod (European Russia): Chyornaya, Levinka, Borzovka and Rzhavka. All the rivers flow in the city and fall under strong anthropogenic impact. The genus Synura was studied by means of transmission and scanning electron microscopy during 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015. In total, eight species and one form of Synura have been found: S. conopea, S. curtispina, S. echinulata, S. glabra, S. macropora, S. petersenii, S. spinosa f. spinosa, S. spinosa f. longispina, S. uvella. All nine taxa were observed in the river Chyornaya. Five taxa were found in the rivers Levinka, Borzovka and Rzhavka. One species (Synura conopea) is a new record to the flora of Russia. It was found in all studied rivers. Four taxa (S. conopea, S. glabra, S. macropora, S. spinosa f. longispina) are new records to the Middle Volga river basin.

The spatial analysis of experimental data on pollution of small rivers flowing through the city of Barnaul was performed. Some quantitative relationships be-tween nitrate and nitrite concentrations in observation sites were established. The dilution ratio was estimated based on the relation of impurity mass balance in the water.

The population of elderly people is rapidly growing and in terms of safety, senior pedestrians represent one of the most vulnerable group. The pedestrian crossing speed is a significant input parameter in traffic engineering, which can have effect on pedestrians’ safety, especially of older population. The objective of this study was to determine the value of the crossing speed of elderly pedestrians (65+) for different types of urban crossings. The research was conducted at ten intersections in the city of Belgrade, Serbia, using the method of direct observation and a questionnaire for collecting data. The data were analysed in the statistical software package IBM SPSS Statistics. The results showed that elderly pedestrians walk slower and the crossing type significantly influenced the speed of older population. The order of crossing types in relation to the measured speed is ranked as follows, from the lowest to the highest speed value: unsignalized, signalized, signalized with pedestrian countdown display, signalized with pedestrian island and pedestrian countdown display and finally signalized crossing with pedestrian island. According to the questionnaire results, the elderly recognize the importance of implementing pedestrian counters. This indicates the necessity to provide safe street crossing for the elderly using the corresponding engineering measures.

Solving the world’s great crises and taking advantage of the world’s greatest opportunities requires innovation and capacity. E-governance uses Information & Communication Technologies (ICT) to broaden participation and make problem solving more effective. Environmental issues represent some of the world’s greatest crises and most significant opportunities. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is a global leader in tackling such issues. UNEP’s Global Environmental Outlook (GEO) relies on contributions from many experts from all regions of the world. Because capacity development is critical to UNEP’s ability to fulfill its mandate, UNEP collaborated with the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) to commission more than 50 experts to develop training resources for integrated environmental assessment and reporting at the sub-global level. These resources were adapted to an eLearning format, significantly broadening their utility and reach. All materials are organized onto the Moodle Learning Management System and use a facilitated interaction model. The eLearning curriculum and approach has been peer reviewed and pilot tested. This research has further developed a blended learning, Train-the-Multipliers program to train facilitators. This eLearning implementation has clearly demonstrated potential and is advancing e-governance at global, regional, national and sub-national levels in the area of environmental assessment and reporting. Although UNEP’s position as a strong proponent of global environmental governance is unique, the detailed approach described for the eLearning programme is generic and therefore, would be a useful model for others who wish to develop eLearning curricula.

Architecture is an important part of the city, and construction is an indispensable procedure of urban development. From the perspective of “smart construction sites,” this chapter describes the basic system architecture of intelligent information management system for engineering construction and introduces how to use information technology such as internet of things and artificial intelligence to improve the management capacity of engineering construction from the perspective of personnel management, quality management, safety management, equipment management, and environmental management. This chapter also analyzes the advantages and problems of intelligent construction sites in project management and gives specific measures and suggestions to realize smart construction sites.
