The present paper discusses the design analysis and limitations of the steering system of a buggy. Many geometrical and performance characteristics of the designed steering system were considered to address the kinematic constraints and load carrying capacity of the steering elements. Ackremann geometry approach was used to assess the limiting steering angle, while Lewis bending formula with the inclusion of dynamic effects was employed to characterise the flexural properties of the rack and pinion steering system. Analytical results were numerically verified using ABAQUS/Explicit nonlinear finite element (FE) package. Good agreement has been achieved between analytical and numerical results in predicting the flexural behaviour of the steering rack and pinion system.

A theoretical investigation of the laminar squeeze flow of a couple-stress fluid between a flat circular static disk and an axisymmetric curved circular moving disk has been carried out using modified lubrication theory and microcontinuum theory. The combined effects of fluid inertia forces, curvature of the disk and non-Newtonian couple stresses on the squeeze film behavior are investigated analytically. Each of these effects and their combinations show a significant enhancement in the squeeze film behavior, and these are studied through their effects on the squeeze film pressure and the load carrying capacity of the fluid film as a function of time. Two different forms of the gapwidth between the disks have been considered, and the results have been shown to be in good agreement with the existing literature.

Nonlinear finite element model analysis of the casing plug joints of steel tubular has been realized by ANSYS software. The law of load-carrying capability and stiffness of joint are separately gained by changing the ratio of length and diameter (R/L) and the ratio of the casing length and the main tube length (l/L). The influence of the casing thickness on the load-carrying capability and stiffness are also discussed. The results indicated that the load-carrying capability and stiffness of the joints both increase with the ratio(R/L) increment and the ratio of the casing length and main tube length (l/L). When the main tube thickness is equal to casing thickness, the load-carrying capacity of joints achieves the most.

The multiple-shear dowel connection with slotted-in steel plates is one of the most efficient joints for large cross section timber structures. Experiments were performed on dowel-type timber connections with one, two and three slotted in steel plates under lateral loads parallel to the grain. Test variables include the number of steel plates, the spacing of the steel plates, and the dowel diameter. Results show that the load-carrying capacity of the dowel-type connection increased as the number and spacing of steel plates in the same thickness of timber specimens. Finally, a model of the load-carrying capacity of multiple shear steel-to-timber connections is presented, which showed good agreement with the results obtained in the experiment.

Abstract The flexural properties of reinforced concrete beams containing expanded glass as a partial fine aggregate (sand) replacement are investigated. Four concrete mixes were employed to conduct this study. The fine aggregate was replaced with 0%, 25%, 50% and 100% (by volume) expanded glass. The results suggest that the incorporation of 50% expanded glass increased the workability of the concrete. The compressive strength was decreasing linearly with the increasing amount of expanded glass. The ductility of the concrete beam significantly improved with the incorporation of the expanded glass. However, the load-carrying capacity of the beam and load at which the first crack occurs was reduced. It was concluded that the inclusion of expanded glass in structural concrete applications is feasible.

In this paper, the effects of collision velocity on bullet deformation were discussed and performance of protection board made of PC (polycarbonate) plate was estimated. The deformation of the bullet and the PC board after collision were measured by 3-dimensional digitizing machine.Furthermore, the bullet collision analysis was performed by FEM analysis code "LS-DYNA", and the impact load carrying capacity of PC plate was discussed by comparing the experimental results with the analytical ones

In this paper, a yield criterion for hybrid asymmetric metal sandwich structure is proposed including the combined effects of geometrical and physical asymmetries. Taking account of the interaction of bending and axial stretching and using the yield criterion, we obtain an analytical solution for large deflections of fully clamped hybrid asymmetric sandwich beam transversely loaded by a flat punch at mid-span. Moreover, finite element analysis is performed and good agreement is achieved between numerical results and analytical predictions. It is shown that the well-designed hybrid asymmetric sandwich beam may have higher load-carrying capacity than the conventional geometrically or physically asymmetric counterpart in large deflections.

At construction sites, various types of temporary equipment and structures are used for safety and work efficiency. However, various temporary equipment-related accidents frequently occur for many reasons, including inappropriate installation, usage, and material and structural imperfections. A mobile scaffold is one of the most commonly used indoor temporary equipment for work in high places. In general, the main structural members of the mobile scaffold, such as the mainframes, horizontal members, braces, caster wheels, outriggers, and handrails, are installed on the construction site for this purpose. This means that the load-carrying capacity of the equipment can vary depending on the assembly details. In Korea, there are safety certification standards applied for frequently used temporary equipment, such as scaffolds and shoring. However, the standards concern the strength criteria for the member itself, rather than the global load-carrying capacity. Therefore, it is difficult to review whether the fabricated mobile scaffold has sufficient load-carrying capacity, or to confirm the structural safety considering the various uncertainties affecting the structural performance. In this study, rational safety certification standards and evaluation methods are suggested for fabricated mobile scaffolds. The suggested safety certification standards present structure-level criteria for checking the load-carrying capacity, horizontal stiffness of the structure, and overturning risk. It is expected that the structural performance for safety can be directly checked based on the suggested safety certification standards and performance evaluation methods during the safety certification stage.

A model is developed to predict the hydrodynamic performance of a foil journal bearing. The model accounts for both the compressibility of air and the compliance of the bearing surface. A series of predictions of the load-carrying capacity based on the numerical solution for pressure is presented that cover a wide range of operating speeds. The results show good agreement with existing experimental data.
