AbstractThe implementation of agile frameworks, such as SAFe, in large companies causes conflicts between the overall product development process with a rigid linkage to the calendar cycles and the continuous agile project planning. To resolve these conflicts, adaptive processes can be used to support the creation of realistic target-processes, i.e. project plans, while stabilizing process quality and simplifying process management. This enables the usage of standardisation methods and module sets for design processes.The objective of this contribution is to support project managers to create realistic target-processes through the usage of target-process module sets. These target-process module sets also aim to stabilize process quality and to simplify process management. This contribution provides an approach for the development and application of target-process module sets, in accordance to previously gathered requirements and evaluates the approach within a case study with project managers at AUDI AG (N=21) and an interview study with process authors (N=4) from three different companies.

As part of the project planning process, highway agencies must allocate limited funding to a substantial list of projects that exceeds available resources. For preservation projects, a key component of this decision is to determine which projects receive safety improvements and which are “pave only.” Traditionally, this decision has been made project by project, with the possible result of a selection that does not maximize safety benefits. This paper takes a case study approach and applies a new tool developed in NCHRP Report 486, the Resurfacing Safety Resource Allocation Program (RSRAP), to a subset of the Oregon Department of Transportation's (DOT's) highway network. The RSRAP tool maximizes safety improvements for a given set of projects and budget. Thirty-three projects scheduled to receive a new road surface were selected and analyzed with RSRAP. These projects were subdivided into smaller sites to meet the assumptions of RSRAP. Road geometry, traffic volumes, and crash history for each site were collected and input into the program. The type and cost of the safety improvements output by RSRAP were compared with those selected by Oregon DOT. This research determined that RSRAP, which selected more projects for safety improvements than did Oregon DOT, is a tool that could be used by the department to select various safety improvements on pavement preservation projects. It was also determined that the budget used by Oregon DOT was large enough that all cost-effective improvements could be made.

The Sanitation Safety Planning methodology is implemented within a cooperation project in Iringa, Tanzania. The study presents the methodology and its adaptation and use for the given context, in order to assess risks and to support stakeholders in improving the current sanitation system and validate the design of an improved one. First results of the application of the methodology, obtained in one of the four peri-urban wards of Iringa, demonstrated its efficacy and utility in prioritising risks and identifying cost-effective control measures. Risks were assessed by the use of a semi-quantitative approach, and a simplified risk assessment matrix was developed for the case study. A sensitivity analysis was carried out in order to evaluate criteria for prioritising control measures to be selected for the development of an achievable improvement plan.

The article presents and analyzes data from a case study in customer-initiated software product development. We have observed and participated in system development activities in a commercial software house (company) over a period of two years. The company produces project-planning tools for the oil and gas industry, and relies on interaction with customers for further development of its products. Our main research question is how customers and professional developers engage in mutual development mediated by shared software tools (products and support systems). We have used interviews with developers and customers as our main source of data, and identified the activities (from use to development) where customers have contributed to development. We analyze our findings in terms of co-configuration, meta-design and modding to name and compare the various stages of development (adaptation, generalization, improvement request, specialization, and tailoring).
