Scholarly research over the last twenty years has marked a profound shift in the understanding of Beckett's sources, his methods of composition, and his attitudes towards citation and allusion in manuscript documents and published texts. Such landmark studies as James Knowlson's biography, Damned to Fame (1996), and John Pilling's edition of the Dream Notebook (1999), and the availability of primary documents such as Beckett's reading notes at Reading and Trinity libraries, opened the way for a generation of work rethinking Beckett's textual habitus. Given this profound reappraisal of Beckett's material processes of composition, this paper seeks to show that Beckett's late prose work, Worstward Ho, represents a profound mediation on writing, self-citation, and habits of allusion to the literary canon. In its epic gestures, it reorients the heavenly aspiration of Dante's Commedia earthwards, invoking instead the language of agriculture, geology and masonry in the process of creating and decreating its imaginative space. Beckett's earthy epic invokes and erodes the first principles of narrative by way of philology as well as by means of deft reference to literary texts and images preoccupied with land, farming, and geological formations. This process is described in the word corrasion, a geological term referring to the erosion of rock by various forms of water, ice, snow and moraine. Textual excursions into philology in Worstward Ho also unearth the strata comprising Beckett's corpus (in particular Imagination Dead Imagine, The Lost Ones, and Ill Seen Ill Said), as well as the rock or canon upon which his own literary production is built. A close reading of Worstward Ho turns up a number of shrewd allusions to the King James Bible and Thomas Browne, as one might expect, but also perhaps surprisingly sustained affinities with the literary sensibilities of Alexander Pope and the poetry of S. T. Coleridge. The more one digs, the more Beckett's ‘little epic’ seems to become one of earthworks, bits of pipe, and masonry, a site and record of literary sedimentation.

This chapter describes the origin of the human lineage within the evolution of the hominoids, which raises the difficult issue of how to integrate the evolution of dentition and terrestrial locomotion. Next is the investigation of the appearance and initial dispersal of the hominins toward the end of the Miocene, with particular attention to the models of colonization of new territories as a function of climate changes. The hypothesis of the adaptation to the open savanna by bipedalism is explored. Finally, there is a summary description of the different deposits and localities of the main African localities with human fossils, pointing out the different geological formations and exemplars found in each deposit, including two sites north of the Rift Valley of great importance: Toros-Menalla (Tchad) and Dmanisi (Georgia).

Chert samples from different coastal and inland outcrops in the Eastern Asturias (Spain) were mineralogically investigated for the first time for archaeological purposes. X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, transmission electron microscopy, infrared and Raman spectroscopy and total organic carbon techniques were used. The low content of moganite, since its detection by X-ray diffraction is practically imperceptible, and the crystallite size (over 1000 Å) of the quartz in these cherts would be indicative of its maturity and could potentially be used for dating chert-tools recovered from archaeological sites. Also, this information can constitute essential data to differentiate the cherts and compare them with those used in archaeological tools. However, neither composition nor crystallite size would allow distinguishing between coastal and inland chert outcrops belonging to the same geological formations.

For radioactive waste disposal, it is important that local groundwater flow is slow as groundwater flow is the main transport medium for radioactive nuclides in geological formations. When the groundwater flow is very slow, diffusion is the dominant transport mechanism (diffusion-dominant domain). Key pieces of evidence indicating a diffusion-dominant domain are the separation of components and the fractionation of isotopes by diffusion. To prove this, it is necessary to investigate the different diffusion coefficients for each component and the related stable isotope fractionation factors. Thus, in this study, through-diffusion and effective-porosity experiments were conducted on selected artificial materials and natural rocks. We also undertook measurements relating to the isotope fractionation factors of Cl and Br isotopes for natural samples. For natural rock samples, the diffusion coefficients of water isotopes (HDO and H218O) were three to four times higher than those of monovalent anions (Cl−, Br- and NO3−), and the isotope fractionation factor of 37Cl (1.0017–1.0021) was slightly higher than that of free water. It was experimentally confirmed that the isotope fractionation factor of 81Br was approximately 1.0007–1.0010, which is equivalent to that of free water. The enrichment factor of 81Br was almost half that of 37Cl. The effective porosity ratios of HDO and Cl were slightly different, but the difference was not significant compared to the ratio of their diffusion coefficients. As a result, component separation was dominated by diffusion. For artificial samples, the diffusion coefficients and effective porosities of HDO and Cl were almost the same; it was thus difficult to assess the component separation by diffusion. However, isotope fractionation of Cl and Br was confirmed using a through-diffusion experiment. The results show that HDO and Cl separation and isotope fractionation of Cl and Br can be expected in diffusion-dominant domains in geological formations.

Abstract In the process of deriving the reservoir petrophysical properties of a basin, identifying the pay capability of wells by interpreting various geological formations is key. Currently, this process is facilitated and preceded by well log correlation, which involves petrophysicists and geologists examining multiple raw log measurements for the well in question, indicating geological markers of formation changes and correlating them with those of neighboring wells. As it may seem, this activity of picking markers of a well is performed manually and the process of ‘examining’ may be highly subjective, thus, prone to inconsistencies. In our work, we propose to automate the well correlation workflow by using a Soft- Attention Convolutional Neural Network to predict well markers. The machine learning algorithm is supervised by examples of manual marker picks and their corresponding occurrence in logs such as gamma-ray, resistivity and density. Our experiments have shown that, specifically, the attention mechanism allows the Convolutional Neural Network to look at relevant features or patterns in the log measurements that suggest a change in formation, making the machine learning model highly precise.
