Internally oxidized Ag-Mg alloys are used as sheaths for high Tc superconductor wires because of their superior mechanical properties. The preparation and characteristics of these materials have been reported. Performance of the sheaths depends on the concentration of the magnesium which generally is less than 0.5 wt. percent. The purpose of this work was to determine whether electron probe microanalysis using energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS) could be used to quantitate three different Ag-Mg alloys. Quantitative EDS analysis can be difficult because the AgL escape peak occurs at the same energy (1.25 keV) as the Mg Kα peak. An EDS spectrum of a Ag-Mg alloy wire is compared to a pure Ag spectrum in Fig. 1.

Genipin is increasingly used as a crosslinking agent for chitosans due to its low cytotoxicity as a naturally occurring extract of the plant <i>Gardenia jasminoides</i>. Genipin reacts with the primary amino groups of chitosan to form blue hydrogels. We studied the gelation kinetics of different chitosans varying in their properties (molar mass 34 000-213 000 g mol-1, degree of acetylation 9-20%) and genipin in detail. We found that critical sol-gel transition times obtained from dynamic light scattering were in good agreement with the results obtained by small deformation oscillatory rheometry and microviscosimetry at high concentrations of chitosan. However, at below critical concentrations, we found a second regime of gelation that followed the same Ross-Murphy's gelation kinetics. The macroscopic appearance of these samples was a suspension of weak gel-like particles that were sensitive to mechanical forces. We believe that the material is a mesoscopic gel, as described for other polymers. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that this phenomenon has been described for the gelling system of chitosan and genipin.

This review presents an overview of the recent developments in the synthesis of layered double hydroxide (LDH) on the anodized films of Mg alloys prepared by either conventional anodizing or plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) and the applications of the formed composite ceramics as smart chloride traps in corrosive environments. In this work, the main fabrication approaches including co-precipitation, in situ hydrothermal, and an anion exchange reaction are outlined. The unique structure of LDH nanocontainers enables them to intercalate several corrosion inhibitors and release them when required under the action of corrosion-relevant triggers. The influences of different variables, such as type of cations, the concentration of salts, pH, and temperature, immersion time during the formation of LDH/anodic film composites, on the electrochemical response are also highlighted. The correlation between the dissolution rate of PEO coating and the growth rate of the LDH film was discussed. The challenges and future development strategies of LDH/anodic films are also highlighted in terms of industrial applications of these materials.
