Dust-lower-hybrid waves in quantum plasma have been studied. The dispersion relation of the dust-lower-hybrid wave has been examined using the quantum hydrodynamic model of plasma in an ultra-cold Fermi dusty plasma in the presence of a uniform external magnetic field. Graphical analysis shows that the electron Fermi temperature effect and the quantum corrections give rise to significant effects on the dust-lower-hybrid wave of the magnetized quantum dusty plasma.

We consider the propagation of a large-amplitude lower-hybrid wave. Modulational instabilities arising from its interaction with low-frequency electrostatic perturbations are investigated. The growth lengths of the convective instabilities are obtained and compared with previous results for adiabatic perturbations.

Abstract. We consider the role that the lower-hybrid wave turbulence plays in providing the necessary resistivity at collisionless reconnection sights. The mechanism for generating the waves is considered to be the lower-hybrid drift instability. We find that the level of the wave amplitude is sufficient enough to heat and accelerate both electrons and ions.

The electrostatic lower-hybrid wave is shown to decay parametrically into a whistler wave and a resonant ion cyclotron mode or an ion cyclotron quasi-mode or a reactive quasi-mode. The convective threshold powers for these decay instabilities are found to be much larger than presently available pump powers. These decay instabilities, however, are expected to play an important role in the saturation of the parametrically excited short-wavelength lower-hybrid waves having frequency close to ωlh.

The generation of lower-hybrid waves in an inhomogeneous electron beam is examined. Wave amplitudes are invariably limited by the convective nature of the instability. The self-consistent shear of the magnetic-field geometry due to the beam current is limited to the role of dividing the general problem into separate cases according to the relative orientation of the wave vector and direction of inhomogeneity. Moreover, the limiting case of small shear is smoothly connected to the case where shear is altogether negligible. Estimates of the amplification of lower-hybrid waves propagating across the electron beam are made for the various cases.

AbstractThis paper describes some aspects of lower-hybrid wave activity in space plasmas. Lower-hybrid waves are particularly important since they can transfer energy efficiently between electrons and ions in a collisionless magnetized plasma. We consider the ‘fan’ or anomalous Doppler resonance instability driven by energetic electron tails and show that it is responsible for the generation of lower-hybrid waves. We also demonstrate that observations of their intensity are sufficient to drive the modulational instability.
