Abstract We evaluated the beam current dependence of defect formation during Mg ion implantation into GaN at a high temperature of 1100℃ with two beam currents. Photoluminescence spectra suggested that low-beam-current ion implantation reduced the vacancy concentration and activated Mg to a greater extent. Moreover, scanning transmission electron microscopy analysis showed that low-beam-current implantation reduced the density of Mg segregation defects with inactive Mg and increased the number of intrinsic dislocation loops, suggesting a decrease in the density of Ga and N vacancies. The formation of these defects depended on beam current, which is an important parameter for defect suppression.

Abstract Plasma streaming instabilities play an important role in magnetic field amplification and particle acceleration in relativistic shocks and their environments. However, in the far shock precursor region where accelerated particles constitute a highly relativistic and dilute beam, streaming instabilities typically become inefficient and operate at very small scales when compared to the gyroradii of the beam particles. We report on a plasma cavitation instability that is driven by dilute relativistic beams and can increase both the magnetic field strength and coherence scale by orders of magnitude to reach near-equipartition values with the beam energy density. This instability grows after the development of the Weibel instability and is associated with the asymmetric response of background leptons and ions to the beam current. The resulting net inductive electric field drives a strong energy asymmetry between positively and negatively charged beam species. Large-scale particle-in-cell simulations are used to verify analytical predictions for the growth and saturation level of the instability and indicate that it is robust over a wide range of conditions, including those associated with pair-loaded plasmas. These results can have important implications for the magnetization and structure of shocks in gamma-ray bursts, and more generally for magnetic field amplification and asymmetric scattering of relativistic charged particles in plasma astrophysical environments.

The article presents the results of research and calculations on the formation of a radial electron beam by a magnetron gun with a secondary emission cathode in the electron energy range 35...65 keV and measuring its parameters during transportation in the total decreasing magnetic field of thesolenoid and the stray field of permanent magnets. The beam was transported in a system consisting of copper rings with an inner diameter of 66 mm,located at a distance of 85 mm from the exit of the magnetron gun. The dependence of the beam current on the amplitude and gradient of the fielddecay has been studied. The studies carried out have shown the possibility of stable formation of a radial electron beam with an energy of tens of keVin the decreasing magnetic field of the solenoid. By optimizing the distribution of the magnetic field (created by the solenoid and ring magnets) and itsdecay gradient, it is possible to achieve an increase in the incident of electrons on one ring (up to ~72% of the beam current). On the basis of themathematical model of the movement of the electron flow, a software tool has been synthesized that makes it possible to obtain and interpret thecharacteristics of the resulting flows. The obtained numerical dependences are in satisfactory agreement with the experimental results for a magneticfield with a large decay gradient. Various configurations of the magnetic field are considered. Solutions to the direct problem of modeling electrontrajectories for given initial conditions and parameters are obtained. Various configurations of the magnetic field are considered. It is shown that forthe selected initial conditions for the electron beam and the distributions of the longitudinal magnetic field along the axis of the gun and the transportchannel, the electron flux falls on a vertical section, the length of which is on the order of a millimeter. Thus, by changing the amplitude anddistribution of the magnetic field, it is possible to control the current in the radial direction along the length of the pipe, and, therefore, the place of theelectron irradiation.

Abstract A novel self-injection relativistic backward wave oscillator (RBWO) has been proposed. By introducing a self-injection path into the RBWO, a small portion of the energy in the reflector can be coupled to the upstream of the reflector, and then the formed electric field in the self-injection path region can pre-modulate the passing electron beam, to promote a frequency-locking oscillation of the electron beam. The pre-modulated electron beam can be expected to enhance the beam-wave interaction and suppress parasitic mode oscillation, which is beneficial for maintaining the dominant role of the operating mode. The proposed self-injection RBWO shows great potential for improving the conversion efficiency and pulse duration time. Through particle-in-cell simulation, a microwave with a power of 10.6 GW is obtained, when the beam voltage is 1.08 MeV, and the beam current is 18.6 kA. The conversion efficiency is 53%.

Abstract The focus of the study was to investigate the peculiarities of the domains created by electron beam (e-beam) in a surface layer of congruent lithium niobate, which comparable to a depth of electron beam charge penetration. Direct e-beam writing (DEBW) of different domain structures with a scanning electron microscope was performed on the polar -Z cut. Accelerating voltage 15 kV and e-beam current 100 pA were applied. Different patterns of local irradiated squares were used to create domain structures and single domains. No domain contrast was observed by the PFM technique. Based on chemical etching, it was found that the vertices of the domains created do not reach the surface level. The average deepening of the domain vertices was several hundred nanometers and varied depending on the irradiation dose and the location of the irradiated areas (squares) relative to each other. Computer simulation was applied to analyze the spatial distribution of the electric field in the various irradiated patterns. The deepening was explained by the fact that in the near-surface layer there is a sign inversion of the normal component of the electric field strength vector, which controls the domain formation during DEBW. Thus, with the help of e-beam, domains were created completely located in the bulk, in contrast to the domains that are nucleated on the surface of the -Z cut during the polarization inversion with AFM tip. The detected deepening of e-beam domains suggests the possibility of creating the “head-to-head” domain walls in the near-surface layer lithium niobate by DEBW.

This paper presents the experimental results on electron, ion temperatures and densities in a pulsed plasma accelerator. The values of electron densities and temperatures were computed using the methods of relative intensities of Hα and Hβ lines, Hβ Stark broadening, and the technique is based on Faraday cup beam current measurements. In this work, a linear optical spectrometer S-100 was used to acquire the emission spectra of hydrogen and air plasmas. In this spectrum, there are some lines due to Fe, Cu, N2, O2, and H2. The series of visible lines in the hydrogen atom spectrum are named the Balmer series. The spectral emissions of iron and copper occur throughout the gas breakdown and ignition of an arc discharge, during the erosion and sputtering of materials. The vacuum chamber and coaxial electrodes were made. The electron temperatures and densities in a pulsed plasma accelerator, measured via relative intensities of spectral lines and Stark broadening, at a charging voltage of a capacitor bank of 3 kV and a working gas pressure in a vacuum chamber of 40 mTorr, were 2.6 eV and 1.66 · 1016 cm−3 for hydrogen plasma. These results were compared with the Faraday cup beam current measurements. However, no match was found. Considering and analyzing this distinction, we concluded that the spectral method of plasma diagnostics provides more accurate results than electrical measurement. The theory of probe measurements can give approximate results in a moving plasma.

Abstract The effects of ion beam current associated with the streaming positive ions on the dust charge fluctuations and ion acoustic wave propagation in quiescent electronegative dusty plasma have been investigated using fluid theory. The dust charging phenomenon and unstable mode of ion waves are modified for two streaming conditions of positive ions which are extended and graphically illustrated. The dependencies of the growing and damping rate of ion waves on dust density and the size of dust grains are studied. The evolution of dust surface potential is found in the negative domain with the increase in concentration of negative ions and the instability rate for ion wave decreases. Furthermore, it is shown that the dust surface potential shifts into positive domain as the electrons are significantly depleted (and the plasma becomes ion-ion plasma) from the electronegative plasma and thus ion waves exhibit a damping phenomenon.

We consider three types of electron accelerators that can be used for various applications, such as industrial, medical, cargo inspection, and isotope production applications, and that require small- and medium-sized machines, namely classical microtron (CM), race-track microtron (RTM), and multisection linac. We review the principles of their operation, the specific features of the beam dynamics in these machines, discuss their advantages and weak points, and compare their technical characteristics. In particular, we emphasize the intrinsic symmetry of the stability region of microtrons. We argue that RTMs can be a preferable choice for medium energies (up to 100 MeV) and that the range of their potential applications can be widened, provided that the beam current losses are significantly reduced. In the article, we analyze two possible solutions in detail, namely increasing the longitudinal acceptance of an RTM using a higher-order harmonic accelerating structure and improving beam matching at the injection.

Abstract Thus far, effects of secondary γ-electrons emitted from accelerator grids of gridded ion sources on ionization in discharge chambers have not been studied. The presence and induced processes of such secondary electrons in a microwave electron cyclotron resonance gridded ion source are confirmed by the consistent explanations of: (1) the observed jump of ion beam current (Ib) in case of a low-density plasma appearing at the chamber’s radial center due to the microwave skin effect; (2) the evolution of glow images recorded from the end-view of the ion source during the jump of Ib; (3) the over-large jump step of Ib with the increasing microwave power; (4) the pattern appearing on the temperature sticker exposed to the discharge operated in the regime where the arrayed energetic-electron beamlets are injected into the discharge chamber; (5) the measured step-increment in the voltage drop across the screen grid sheath. A positive feedback loop composed of involved processes are established to elucidate the underlying mechanism. Energetic γ-electrons from the accelerator grid and warm δ-electrons from the opposite antenna do not produce direct excitation and ionization, but they enhance the electrical confinement of cold electrons by elevating the voltage drop across the sheaths at the antenna and screen grid, thus leading to the jump of Ib. The energetic γ-electrons-based model can be also modified to explain abnormal results observed in the other gridded ion sources. Energetic γ-electrons from accelerator grids should be taken into account in understanding gridded ion sources.
