The inherent porous nature and facile tunability of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) make them ideal candidates for use in multiple fields. MOF hybrid materials are derived from existing MOFs hybridized with other materials or small molecules using a variety of techniques. This led to superior performance of the new materials by combining the advantages of MOF components and others. In this review, we discuss several hybridization methods for the preparation of various MOF hybrids with representative examples from the literature. These methods include covalent modifications, noncovalent modifications, and using MOFs as templates or precursors. We also review the applications of the MOF hybrids in the fields of catalysis, drug delivery, gas storage and separation, energy storage, sensing, and others.

Recent progress about a novel organic–inorganic hybrid materials, namely cyclodextrins (CDs) modified/coated metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) is summarized by using a special categorization method focusing on the interactions between CDs and MOFs moieties, such as ligand–metal cations interactions, supramolecular interactions including host–guest interactions and hydrogen bonding, as well as covalent bonds. This review mainly focuses on the interactions between CDs and MOFs and the strategy of combining them together, diverse external stimuli responsiveness of CDs-modified/coated MOFs, as well as applications of these hybrid materials to drug delivery and release system, catalysis and detection materials. Additionally, due to the importance of investigating advanced chemical architectures and physiochemical properties of CDs-modified/coated MOFs, a separate section is involved in diverse characterization methods and instruments. Furthermore, this minireview also foresees future research directions in this rapidly developing field.

Lanthanide functionalized hybrids of polyoxometallate based MOF Ln3+⊂COK-15 are prepared and display multi-color light, together with a white luminescence (x = 0.3845, y = 0.303) by tuning an appropriate amount of Eu3+ and a suitable excitation wavelength.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous hybrid materials composed of metal ions and organic linkers, characterized by their crystallinity and by the highest known surface areas. MOFs structures present accessible cages, tunnels and modifiable pores, together with adequate mechanical and thermal stability. Their outstanding properties have led to their recognition as revolutionary materials in recent years. Analytical chemistry has also benefited from the potential of MOF applications. MOFs succeed as sorbent materials in extraction and microextraction procedures, as sensors, and as stationary or pseudo-stationary phases in chromatographic systems. To date, around 100 different MOFs form part of those analytical applications. This review intends to give an overview on the use of MOFs in analytical chemistry in recent years (2017–2019) within the framework of green analytical chemistry requirements, with a particular emphasis on possible toxicity issues of neat MOFs and trends to ensure green approaches in their preparation.
