The primary objective of the population management plan for New Zealand sea lions, Phocarctos hookeri, is to move the species from its current conservation status of ‘Threatened’ to ‘Non-threatened’. The mechanism by which this will occur is through the establishment of new breeding colonies away from the only existing colonies at Auckland Islands and Campbell Island. Otago, on the southeast coast of the South Island of New Zealand, is one of only three locations where breeding has been recorded away from these islands in modern times. We found only one female at the initiation of our surveys here in 1991, an individual that had been tagged as a pup at Auckland Islands. This female has remained resident at Otago and is now breeding. Her first live birth, in the 1993/94 breeding season, represented the first record of a P. hookeri pup on the New Zealand mainland since the elimination of the species here by humans c. 150 years ago. Up to and including the 2000/01 breeding season she had produced six pups. Her surviving pups have remained at Otago and her eldest two daughters have started breeding, producing a further three pups. From this total of nine live births, two pups have died. Although 6 - 8 other migrant females have been recorded, to our knowledge none have bred at Otago. We conclude that the initiation of breeding by P. hookeri at Otago has been a serendipitous event attributable to atypical behaviour by a single female.

Abstract A description is provided for Endophragmiella pinicola, which colonies are found on dead decaying leaves, twigs and cones of conifers, occasionally on other substrata, very often in association with other fungi, effuse, greyish-brown. Information is included on geographical distribution (USA (Alabama, Kentucky and Tennessee), Campbell Island, India (Himachal Pradesh), New Zealand, Czech Republic, France, UK and Ireland), hosts (Abies alba, Cedrus deodara, Myriophyllum spicatum, Picea sitchensis, Picea sp., Pinus montezumae, P. nigra, P. radiata, P. sylvestris, P. thunbergii, P. torreyana, Pinus sp. and Taxus cuspidata), biology and conservation status.

The Heart of Borneo (HoB) declaration is a conservation agreement initiated by WWF and signed by three countries, i.e., Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia and Malaysia in Bali, Indonesia on 12th February 2007 to protect more than 23 million hectares of forested region on Borneo Island. These forested areas could be well protected when conservation management plan is in place. One of the crucial activities to facilitate the planning and formulation of conservation plan is to conduct scientific expeditions that include botanical exploration. The primary objective of the expedition is to identify the key conservation targets within the forest reserves. For the past five years, several expeditions have been conducted by the Sabah Forestry Department under the auspices of the HoB project to explore various forest reserves with conservation issues within the Heart of Borneo area. This paper will present the findings which include plant richness, endemism and plant conservation status in each forest reserves that has been explored.

The present management strategy for New Zealand sea lions Phocarctos hookeri assumes that kills in a squid trawl fishery around Auckland Islands, the species population base, have prevented an increase in abundance of sea lions. This strategy also assumes that emigration will be initiated as the population reaches carrying capacity, and that emigration rates will be density dependent. We used the combination of photographic identification of individuals and diagnostic features of age classes to estimate immigration rates of P. hookeri to Otago, South Island, New Zealand. Most immigrants were males = 2 years old at arrival, and included animals tagged as pups at Auckland Islands. Estimates for total numbers of immigrants to Otago from four consecutive cohorts, 1991/92 - 1994/95, varied three-fold through a period of constant annual pup production at Auckland Islands. The greatest influx was from the 1993/94 cohort, a breeding season that predated the enforcement of early closures of the squid fishery. We suggest published records from the Auckland Islands indicate that this population is already at carrying capacity. If so, then factors other than, or in addition to, pup production and fishery mortality have an impact on emigration rates.

Abstract The taxonomy of the Australasian teals has been particularly unstable. Australasian Grey Teal (Anas gracilis) and Chestnut Teal (A. castanea) are widely viewed as specifically distinct, but the taxonomy of the New Zealand teals remains unsettled. Because conservation status is affected by taxonomic rank, it is important to resolve the status of the rare subantarctic teals. To estimate phylogenetic relationships of teals, we sequenced three mitochondrial DNA genes (12S, and ATPase 6 and 8). The resultant phylogeny unequivocally groups the Chestnut Teal with the Grey Teal, rather than with the New Zealand teals as has traditionally been held (Fleming 1953). A greater level of sequence divergence occurred within the New Zealand teals than between the Grey and Chestnut teals. This diversity, together with morphological and behavioral differences, implies that the New Zealand teals should be accorded specific status as A. aucklandica, A. nesiotis, and A. chlorotis. Although it is most likely that the teal that colonized the Auckland Islands and Campbell Islands originated in New Zealand, our data do not allow us to determine whether the ancestors of the Campbell Island Teal came from mainland New Zealand or the Auckland Islands. This uncertainty arises because, as our data show, the colonization events were separated by a short period of time.

Sabulopteryxbotanica Hoare & Patrick, sp. nov. (Lepidoptera, Gracillariidae, Gracillariinae) is described as a new species from New Zealand. It is regarded as endemic, and represents the first record of its genus from the southern hemisphere. Though diverging in some morphological features from previously described species, it is placed in genus Sabulopteryx Triberti, based on wing venation, abdominal characters, male and female genitalia and hostplant choice; this placement is supported by phylogenetic analysis based on the COI mitochondrial gene. The life history is described: the larva is an underside leaf-miner on the endemic divaricating shrub Teucriumparvifolium (Lamiaceae), and exits the mine to pupate in a cocoon in a folded leaf of the host plant. The remarkable history of the discovery and rediscovery of this moth is discussed: for many years it was only known from a single sap-feeding larva found in a leaf-mine in a pressed herbarium specimen of the host. The adult was discovered by BHP in Christchurch Botanic Gardens in 2013. Most distribution records of the moth come from a recent search for mines and cocoons on herbarium specimens of T.parvifolium. Sabulopteryxbotanica has high conservation status, and is regarded as ‘Nationally Vulnerable’ according to the New Zealand Department of Conservation threat classification system, based on the rarity and declining status of its host plant. However, the presence of apparently thriving populations of S.botanica on cultivated plants of T.parvifolium, especially at the type locality, Christchurch Botanic Gardens, suggests that encouraging cultivation of the plant could greatly improve the conservation status of the moth. A revised checklist of New Zealand Gracillariidae is presented, assigning all species to the currently recognised subfamilies. The Australian Macarostolaida (Meyrick, 1880) is newly recorded from New Zealand (Auckland), where it is established on Eucalyptus.

The caterpillars of the Southern Swallowtail, Papilio alexanor have been recorded in the vicinity of Trebinje, Bosnia & Herzegovina. This is the first recent observation of this species in the country and the third observation so far. Opopanax chironium is confirmed as the larval host plant in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which was expected due to the recent observations from Croatia. Its status and distribution in the country are still not clear, and further surveys are recommended in order to reconfirm the historical records as well as to assess its current conservation status. Due to the limited extent of its occurrence, we propose to include it in the Red list of fauna of Bosnia & Herzegovina as Vulnerable (VU).
