The structures of the title nitroxide , C12H16NO (1), and the alkoxy amine derivative, C18H24N2O2 (2), have been determined by single-crystal X-ray structural analyses. Crystals of (1) are monoclinic, space group Cc with a 11.585(6), b 11.697(10), c 16.753(8)Ǻ, β 94.33(6)°, Z 8; R was 0.064 for 1226 independent reflections. The -C(NO)C- group is essentially planar (sum trigonal angles 359.9, 359.9°, as is the five- membered ring. The N-O distances are 1.249(6), 1.252(8)Ǻ. Crystals of (2) are monoclinic, space group P21/c, a 8.295(2), b 13.567(5), c 15.294(3)Ǻ, β 98.82(2)°, Z 4; R was 0.051 for 1445 independent reflections. By contrast to (1) the geometry about the nitrogen atom is pyramidal (sum trigonal angles 328°), and the corresponding five-membered ring has an envelope conformation with a nitrogen displacement of 0.45Ǻ. The N-O distance is 1.439(4)Ǻ. The high-resolution solid state 13C n.m.r . spectrum of (2) is discussed in relation to the X-ray structure.

The solid-state structure of N,N-dibenzylhydroxylamine (1) has been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The compound crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P 21/n with four formula units in the unit cell. N,N-dibenzylhydroxylamine dimerizes to give N2O2H2 sixmembered rings as a result of the formation of two hydrogen bonds O - H ··· N in the solid state.

The crystal structure of zerumbone, C15H22O, extracted from the rhizomes of Zingiber zerumbet Smith, has been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction at 295(1) K and refined by least squares to a residual of 0.051 for 925 'observed' reflections. Crystals are monoclinic, space group P21/c, a 9.036(3), b 9.712(5), c 15.643(6) , β 97.19(3), Z = 4. Although the molecule has no chiral centre, the presence of the three trans double bonds confers considerable distortion and rigidity on the eleven-membered ring and renders the whole molecule chiral and potentially resolvable.

Synthesis and structure of two phosphates belonging to the ternary Sb2O5–In2O3–P2O5 system are realized. Structures of SbV1.50InIII0.50(PO4)3 and (SbV0.50InIII0.50)P2O7 phases, obtained by solid state reaction in air at 950 °C, were determined at room temperature from X-ray powder diffraction using the Rietveld method. SbV1.50InIII0.50(PO4)3 have a monoclinic (space group P21/n) distortion of the Sc2(W O4)3-type framework. Its structure is constituted by corner-shared SbO6 or InO6 octahedra and PO4 tetrahedra. Monoclinic unit cell parameters are a=11.801(2) Å, b=8.623(1) Å, c=8.372(1) Å, and β=90.93(1)°. (Sb0.50In0.50)P2O7 is isotypic with (Sb0.50Fe0.50)P2O7 and crystallizes in orthorhombic system (space group Pna21) with a=7.9389(1) Å, b=16.0664(2) Å, and c=7.9777(1) Å. Its structure is built up from corner-shared SbO6 or InO6 octahedra and P2O7 groups (two group-types). Each P2O7 group shares its six vertices with three SbO6 and three InO6 octahedra, and each octahedron is connected to six P2O7 groups.

[(THF)2LiCl2VCl2(THF)2] (1) and [Li(THF)4][OMoCl4(THF)] (2) can be prepared by the reactions of VCI3 with LiCl in THF and of Li(H)PtBu with OM0 CI4 in THF, respectively. 1 and 2 were characterized by IR spectroscopy, MS spectrometry (2) and X-ray crystallography. 1 can be obtained in two modifications depending on the temperature of crystallization. At -30 °C a triclinic form, 1a, was isolated from THF solution with one unique molecule per asymmetric unit. However, at 20 °C, 1b crystallized in the monoclinic space group P2/c. It possesses four independent molecules per asymmetric unit. According to the structure analyses 1 consists of a dinuclear complex with a planar LiCl2V four-membered ring while 2 consists of seperate ions [Li(THF)4]+ and [OMoCl4(THF)]-

1,3-Dimethyldiaza-2-arsenanium tetrachlorogallate (crystal data: C5H12AsCl4GaN2, M = 386.61, orthorhombic, space group Pca21, a = 14.432(3) Å, b = 6.7580(14) Å, c = 13.905(3) Å, V = 1356.2(5) Å3) is synthesized by the routine chloride ion abstraction procedure from 2-chloro-1,3-dimethyldiaza-2-arsenane (crystal data: C5H12AsClN2, M = 210.54, monoclinic, space group P21/n, a = 7.206(1) Å, b = 9.650(1) Å, c = 13.021(2) Å, β = 99.61(2)°, V = 892.8(2) Å3). X-ray crystallographic studies of both compounds are described together with that for 2-chloro-1,3-dimethyldiaza-2-arsolidine (crystal data: C4H10AsClN2, M = 196.51, monoclinic, space group P21/n, a = 6.959(7) Å, b = 9.23(2) Å, c = 12.14(2) Å, β = 95.4(1)°, V = 777(4) Å3) providing useful structural comparisons. In contrast to the closely related arsolidinium salts, the diazarsenanium gallate exhibits a monomeric solid state structure. Rapid and quantitative cycloaddition reactions of the diazarsolidinium and diazarsenanium cations with 2,4-dimethylbutadiene give similar cycloadducts. The Diels–Alder type arsolidinium adduct is structurally characterized (crystal data: C10H20AsCl4GaN2, M = 454.73, orthorhombic, space group Pca21, a = 18.471(2) Å, b = 7.000(2) Å, c = 13.738(1) Å, V = 1776.2(8) Å3), and the related structure of the arsenanium cycloadduct is confirmed by 2D NMR. Key words: arsenium, cycloadditions, arsenanium, Diels–Alder, cyclochloroarsines.

The reaction of 1,5-Ph4P2N4S2Ph2 with [PtCl2CPEt3)]2 in chloroform at 60 °C produces the 1:1 adduct trans-PtCl2(PEt3)(Ph4P2N4S2Ph2) in which the platinum is attached to a nitrogen atom on the basis of 31P nmr spectroscopy. By contrast, the corresponding reactions of 1,5-Ph4P2N4Se2R2 (R = Me, Et, Ph) produce the 2:1 adducts [PtCl2(PEt3)]2(Ph4P2N4Se2R2) (7a, R = Me; 7b, R = Et; 7c, R = Ph) which have been characterized by 1H, 31P and 77Se nmr spectroscopy and, in the case of 7b, by X-ray crystallography. Crystals of 7b are monoclinic, space group C2/c, with a = 27.803(7) Å, b = 12.378(7) Å, c = 15.752(8) Å, β = 115.49(2)°, V = 4893(3) Å3, and Z = 4. The least-squares refinement with anisotropic thermal parameters for all non-hydrogen atoms converged at R = 0.037 and Rw = 0.022. The platinum centres in 7b are attached to distal nitrogen atoms of the disordered P2N4Se2 ring. The reaction of the six-membered ring Ph4P2N3SPh with [PtCl2(PEt3)]2 in dichloromethane at 23 °C occurs in a regiospecific manner to give the 1:1 adduct PtCl2(PEt3)(Ph4P2N3SPh) in which, on the basis of 31P nmr spectroscopy, the platinum is coordinated to a nitrogen atom between phosphorus and sulfur.
