Trachymedusae and Narcomedusae of South-east Australian Waters

Thirteen species of Trachymedusae and seven of Narcomedusae are recorded from south-east Australian waters, where both orders were previously unknown. Eight Trachymedusae and four Narcomedusae are new records for the entire Australian region. Additions are made to the descriptions of some species. Eight species are epipelagic, seven bathypelagic, and five probably eurybathic in the upper 1000 m of the sea; the second and third groups contain several cosmopolitan species, but the species of the first (epipelagic) group tend to be restricted to tropical and, subtropical latitudes. One epipelagic species, Liriope tetraphylla (Chamisso & Eysenhardt), has not been found south of lat. 39� S. in south-east Australian waters and may serve as an indicator of one of the two main water masses which meet in that region. The most abundant species of either order is Aglauru hemistoma Peron & Lesueur, which is the commonest of all hydromedusae on the continental shelf off Queensland and New South Wales. Aglaura and Liriope are also recorded from the neighbourhood of Fremantle, W.A.

The distribution of tailor (Pomatomus saltatrix) larvae is described on the basis of the results of four plankton surveys undertaken in northern and central New South Wales (NSW) coastal waters. These comprised a single survey during May 1989 along the northern NSW coast and multiple surveys in January, March and May 1983 between Sydney and Brisbane. Pomatomus saltatrix larvae occurred throughout the survey period, with the highest abundances on the northern NSW coast. Most larvae were caught in mid and outer continental shelf waters at water temperatures of ≥22�C. The only known spawning locality for P. saltatrix is in the vicinity of Fraser Island in southern Queensland from August to October. The occurrence of larvae along the NSW coast from January to May indicates that the spawning season of P. saltatrix is more extensive than previously reported and that spawning occurs along the east coast of Australia in localities other than Fraser Island. Further surveys of larvae in southern Queensland and northern NSW waters, especially from August to December, are required to determine if P. saltatrix has one extended or two discrete spawning seasons along the eastern coast of Australia.

The long-footed potoroo (Potorous longipes) is one of the rarest and most elusive forest-dwelling mammals in Australia. Survey effort for the species over the past decade or so in south-eastern New South Wales has been driven, primarily, by predictions derived from climatic analyses using BIOCLIM. These predictions were based on known locality records of the long-footed potoroo from adjacent East Gippsland, Victoria. While they have proven useful in confirming the occurrence of the species in New South Wales, recent fortuitous records of the species from north-eastern Victoria fall well outside of the range predicted earlier by BIOCLIM. Using these new records a revised predicted range is calculated, enlarging considerably the potential geographic extent of climatically suitable habitat for the species. The results presented here highlight the limitations of BIOCLIM when given locality records of a species from only a portion of its true geographic range. I argue that less emphasis might be based on this approach to direct survey effort for the species in the future. Instead, a range of other environmental variables might be used in combination with BIOCLIM-derived outputs when selecting survey sites. In this way a more representative picture of the distribution of the species may be obtained.

<p>(*) 216° contribution to the knowledge of the Staphylinidae</p><p><em>Bruxneria lamingtoniana</em> n. gen. n. sp. (Coleoptera, Staphylinidae) from Queensland and New South Wales are described and figured. The new genus is similar to <em>Gyrohypnus</em> Leach, 1819 and <em>Neohypnus</em> Coiffait and Saiz, 1964, but differs by some external characters. Its distinctly dilated anterior tarsi appear to put it next to <em>Notolinus</em> Casey, 1906. Some new records are listed.</p>

Two new species of kalliapseudid tanaidacea from Australia, Kalliapseudes longisetosus and Kalliapseudes messingi, are described from marine waters off Sydney, New South Wales and the Northwest continental shelf, respectively. Kalliapseudes longisetosus is distinguished from the other congeners by the presence of a single, very long simple seta on the anterior corners of the pereonites (about as long as the first pereonite) and several very long simple setae on the basis of the second and third pereopods (about as long as the basis). This new species is the second member of the genus to be reported from New South Wales. Kalliapseudes messingi is distinguished by having two small setae medially on the dactylus of pereopods 4 and 5, by the female having a tuft of sensory setae subterminally on the dactylus of pereopod 6, and by having three plumose setae on both the cheliped and pereopod 1 exopodite and is the first member of the genus to be reported from the Northwest continental shelf of Australia. Both species have a needle-like tip on the dactylus of the second and third pereopods. A table giving the distribution data for the species of Kalliapseudes and a key to the genera and species of Kalliapseudidae now known from Australia are presented.

Culicoides are one of the smallest hematophagous flies measuring 1–5 mm in size with only females seeking blood for egg development. The present study investigated spatio-temporal distribution of Culicoides species trapped between 1990 and 2018 at 13 sites in the New England region of NSW, Australia using automated light traps. Trapping locations were divided into three subregions (tablelands, slopes and plains). Nineteen Culicoides species were identified. Culicoides marksi and C. austropalpalis were the most abundant and widespread species. Culicoides brevitarsis, the principal vector of livestock diseases in New South Wales comprised 2.9% of the total catch and was detected in 12 of the 13 locations in the study. Abundance as determined by Log10 Culicoides count per trapping event for the eight most abundant species did not vary significantly with season but trended towards higher counts in summer for C. marksi (P = 0.09) and C. austropalpalis (P = 0.05). Significant geographic variation in abundance was observed for C. marksi, C. austropalpalis and C. dycei with counts decreasing with increasing altitude from the plains to the slopes and tablelands. Culicoides victoriae exhibited the reverse trend in abundance (P = 0.08). Greater abundance during the warmer seasons and at lower altitudes for C. marksi and C. austropalpalis was indicative of temperature and rainfall dependence in this region with moderate summer dominance in rainfall. The Shannon-Wiener diversity index of species was higher on the tablelands (H = 1.59) than the slopes (H = 1.33) and plains (H = 1.08) with evenness indices of 0.62, 0.46 and 0.39 respectively. Culicoides species on the tablelands were more diverse than on the slopes and plains where C. marksi and C. austropalpalis dominated. The temporal and spatial variation in abundance, diversity and evenness of species reported in this diverse region of Australia provides additional insight into Culicoides as pests and disease vectors and may contribute to future modelling studies.

THE Hastings River mouse Pseudomys oralis is one of the rarest of the pseudomyines and is patchily distributed across New South Wales (NSW) and Queensland, although it is believed to have been more common in the past (Watts and Aslin 1981). It is currently listed as ‘endangered’ at both State (NSW) and Commonwealth levels and there have only been three ecological studies of the species (Townley 2000; Keating 2000; Meek 2002a). One interesting aspect of Pseudomys ecology is their patchy distribution across the landscape (Watts and Aslin 1981), even where habitat appears unaltered and undisturbed. Historically, P. oralis was believed to be widely dispersed, preferring creek and gully habitats dominated by Cyperaceae and Juncaceae species (Read 1993a; Pyke and Read 2002). New evidence indicates that water courses are not as important as previously believed with animals being trapped across a range of topography and habitat types (Townley 2000; Meek 2002a).

A triangular current-meter mooring array and concurrent research vessel observations were used to observe high-frequency current variations for 9 days in April 1981 on the continental shelf off Sydney, N.S.W. Internal waves propagated onshore at 0.6 m s-1 with an energy flux of the order of 103 J m-1 s-1. One soliton-like event was recorded and it also propagated onshore at 0.6 m s-1.
