Radio observations are presented of the fairly large galactic complex Vela-X, Y, and Z. These sources are believed to be the remnant of a supernova having an optical identification with the filamentary nebula Stromlo 16. The brightness distributions, obtained at four frequencies, indicate an open annular structure reminiscent of other supernova remnants. The variation of spectral index over the region is investigated and shows that the radiation is substantially nontherm81, the integrated fluxes yielding a spectral index of -0,3. A high resolution distribution of magnetic field direction is deduced from polarization measurements made at three frequencies; a circumferential magnetic field is a possible interpretation of the field orientations.

Radio evidence for two new supernova remnants in the Southern Milky Way is presented. Some new observations of the known supernova remnant, source 1439-62, and of the Rosette nebula, a shell source but not a supernova remnant, are also presented. The problem of finding model shells to fit the radio observations is considered and it is shown that the radio emission from 1439-62 is unlikely to originate in a shell with spherical symmetry.

Abstract8.4 GHz linear polarization maps, obtained with the Parkes radio telescope, are presented for six southern supernova remnants. These results are compared with published and unpublished polarization maps at 5 GHz to derive the magnetic field direction and Faraday rotation measure distribution.These results are part of a program to map the magnetic fields in galactic supernova remnants and complement our program to obtain high-resolution maps of galactic SNRs using the Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Telescope; five new Molonglo maps are presented here.

A catalogue of 38 supernova remnants (SNRs) identified in the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds from X-ray, optical and radio observations has recently been presented by Mills et al. (1984). One important consideration is the completeness of this catalogue and of the Galactic catalogues with which it is compared. These are currently being investigated.

AbstractWe have performed simultaneous multi-frequency polarization VLBA observations of the compact radio sources 3C 395 and 4C 39.25 which show both stationary and superluminal components in their parsec-scale structures. Those of 3C 395 have been reported elsewhere. Here we report on high resolution maps of the total intensity and polarized radio emission of 4C 39.25, trace the magnetic field configuration along the jet, and explore different possibilities for the nature of the components within the framework of the bent shocked relativistic jet model.

Radio observations of Wolf-Rayet stars currently available in the literature are examined to determine whether binarity is a common feature of WR systems with non-thermal emission. Among 24 stars with observed spectral index values, seven are definite non-thermal emitters, and six others possibly have composite thermal/non-thermal spectra. Stellar companions have been identified in 71% of the non-thermal emitters, strongly supporting a link between non-thermal emission and binarity.

AbstractWe present radio and optical images of the shell-like remnant of the 1901 outburst of Nova GK Persei. The behaviour of this object is remarkably similar to supernova remnants. The synchrotron radiation-emitting shell is polarized with the magnetic field oriented radially, as in young SNR’s. This similarity plus extensive data we have acquired on the expansion and the interstellar environment of GK Per indicate that the nova shell is colliding with ambient gas whose density is substantially higher than the ISM.Furthermore, there is strong evidence that the ambient gas is circumstellar rather than interstellar, and that this material is the shell of an ancient planetary nebula associated with the white dwarf companion of GK Per.

We present a detailed study and results of new Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) observations of supernova remnant SNR J0527-6549. This Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) object follows a typical supernova remnant (SNR) horseshoe morphology with a diameter of D=(66?58)?1 pc which is among the largest SNRs in the LMC. Its relatively large size indicates older age while a steeper than expected radio spectral index of ?=-0.92?0.11 is more typical of younger and energetic SNRs. Also, we report detections of regions with a high order of polarization at a peak value of ~54%?17% at 6 cm.

We present and describe recent radio observations of the Crab Nebula, which allow us to determine the magnetic field orientation and depolarization at unprecedented resolution. The observations were made in 1987-1988 using all four configurations of the VLA, at 1410,1515,4625, and 4885 MHz. The resulting maps were all convolved with a clean beam of 1.8″ × 2.0″, elongated in P.A. 80°, and the residuals added back in.
