Modifications to the Parkes interferometer are described which allow synthesis observations to be made while still retaining the flexibility of frequent baseline changes. Details are given of the receiver with a phase stabilizing device and its performance, on-line computer control, and data processing. Preliminary observations with a resolution of l' of the two sources PKS 2152-69 and 2356-61 and possible optical identifications are discussed briefly.

SummaryThree radio identification programmes are described which are drawn from radio samples with accurate radio positions (< 2" arc rms). Optical identifications are being made on the basis of radio-optical positional coincidence alone, without regard to colour or morphology, using the UKST IIIa-J sky survey to a limiting magnitude of 22.5. Some preliminary results are presented.

AbstractSince 1992 we have been conducting a 5-GHz VLBI imaging survey of southern and equatorial radio sources. So far, we have published the results of two observing sessions with 26 southern radio sources imaged in total (Shen et al. 1997; 1998). In this paper, we present the preliminary results of the third session of observations of 7 equatorial sources in the sample.

The present paper provides a brief history of Electronic Data Processing Systems and their supporting user documentation. The problems inherent to paper documentation are highlighted. Techniques employed to improve on-line reject messages in addition to the development of an online user documentation system are discussed. Future challenges facing the human factors specialist involved in development of on-line documentation are outlined.

Traditional transmission line tower grounding resistance measurements have many shortcomings, in order to make up the defects the model of transmission line tower with good conductor wires and multiple grounding leads was builded, and then the algorithm of tower grounding resistance on-line measurement was proposed. On this condition, a system based on this algorithm was designed and further analysis of the error during data processing was conducted. At last, the MATLAB simulation indicates that the algorithm has a accuracy that meets the practical requirements.

Accurate positions have been measured at Parkes for 451 40 radio sources between declinations 4 and 20. For most of the sources the r.m.s. uncertainty is ION arc in each coordinate. Optical identifications are suggested for 94 sources, of which 22 are galaxies and 72 are possible quasi.stellar objects.
