The Wendlands of Herrenhausen Gardens (Hanover, Germany): a study of their Australian plant specimens in the herbarium of the University of Goettingen (GOET)

Between 1778 and 1903, three successive generations of the Wendland family were Court Gardeners at the Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen, Hanover, Germany. In addition to their horticultural responsibilities, they published several important taxonomic accounts, some involving Australian plants. Johann Christoph Wendland (1755–1828) (J.C.Wendl.) established the endemic Australian genera Angianthus J.C.Wendl. (Asteraceae), Hakea Schrad. & J.C.Wendl. (Proteaceae) and Waitzia J.C.Wendl. (Asteraceae), and provided novel work on Melaleuca L. (Myrtaceae) and Acacia Mill. (as Mimosa L; Fabaceae); Heinrich Ludolph Wendland (1792–1869) (H. L.Wendl.) provided novel and revisionary work on Acacia and Leptospermum J.R.Forst. & G.Forst. (Myrtaceae); and Hermann Wendland (1825–1903) (H. Wendl.) specialised in the palms (Arecaceae) and wrote Palmae Australasicae with Oscar Drude, the foundational work on Australian palms. A search of all the databases and other references accessible to us has resulted in the identification of ~148 names of Australian plants in which the author citation includes any of the three Wendlands. Of these, ~30 are the currently accepted names. Lectotypes are here proposed for the names Acacia amoena H.L.Wendl., A. crassiuscula H.L.Wendl., A. dolabriformis H.L.Wendl., A. emarginata H.L.Wendl., A. homomalla H.L.Wendl., Aster tomentosus J.C.Wendl., Leptospermum buxifolium H.L.Wendl., L. emarginatum H.L.Wendl. ex Link, L. glomeratum H.L.Wendl., Melaleuca linearis Schrad. & J.C.Wendl., M. thea Schrad. & J.C.Wendl., Passiflora glabra J.C.Wendl., Protea nectarina J.C.Wendl., P. pulchella Schrad. & J.C.Wendl., Pultenaea daphnoides J.C.Wendl., P. linophylla Schrad. & J.C.Wendl., P. retorta J.C.Wendl. and Tristania subverticillata H.L.Wendl. Figures are provided of all the proposed lectotypes housed in GOET.

Employing the Integrated Public Use Microdata Series of the University of Minnesota, we chronicle the changing timing and duration of transitions to adulthood in the twentieth century. Successive generations of young Americans reinvented the transition to adulthood to accommodate shifts in the economy and the American state. The patterned choices of young people delineate three eras of social history in the twentieth century: the era of reciprocity (1900–1950), the era of dependence (1950–70s), and the era of autonomy (1970s-2000). We also explain why African Americans differed from the general trend; they developed distinctive transitions to adulthood in response to persistent inequality.

Instead of approaching rights by categorising them into various substantive types or distinguishing them from other concepts, such as principles, this book suggests that individual rights are better understood through a relational definition. An individual right under EU law can thus be defined as the correlative of an obligation, triggered into existence by an individual’s interest in the fulfilment of this obligation. Scanning CJEU case law over successive generations of rights, the book demonstrates that this definition of individual rights resists the test of time and the successive reconfigurations of the EU’s legal order. Catherine Warin, a practising lawyer at the Luxembourg bar, holds a PhD in law from the University of Luxembourg. This book is based on her PhD thesis, for which she was awarded the Pierre Pescatore Prize by the University of Luxembourg’s Doctoral School of Law.

One of the key features of today′s society is the role of technology and mass-media. Among these tools, cinema has influenced successive generations more than 100 years. From an educational point of view, it is a resource of high pedagogical value. Moreover, it is present in the daily life of university students who will be the future teachers. Therefore, the aim of this study is to find out the film consumption habits of students in the teacher′s degree in Spanish universities. A quantitative approach was adopted with a survey design, and the national sample was made up of 4659 students. They ware from the different regions of Spain and 58 universities. The questionnaire called Percepciones sobre las potencialidades del cine como recurso didáctico en las aulas de Infantil y Primaria (PECID) was designed ad hoc for this research. The results obtained showed that most students have a weekly habit of consuming films, with fiction being the most popular type of film. Likewise, the viewing of films is preferably done through television and the computer. It can be concluded that this familiarity with cinema outside the university should be complemented with specific training in the teacher′s degree. In this sense, it contributes to an optimal application of cinema.

Furthering intercultural competence in higher education requires colleges and universities to establish an intentional, mission driven strategic plan that embeds intercultural understanding and practice across the institution’s work. To secure broad-based buy-in and support, this plan needs to consider the various ways that different units within the academy define, interpret, and view intercultural work. For large, complex and multi-faceted colleges and universities, building this plan can prove daunting as different parts of the institution will ascribe different meanings, purposes, and intentions to intercultural advancement.In this paper, administrators from the University of Minnesota, who represent units that are highly engaged in intercultural competence work, share some of their struggles and lessons learned in their effort to build a comprehensive, campus-wide strategy to grow intercultural advancement. The administrators initiated this campus-wide strategic work following their participation in an international conference focused on intercultural competence. Since that time, they have developed recommendations for the foundational work required to establish a common university-wide framework and comprehensive plan for institutional intercultural advancement.

Chapter 8 is a study of Ossessione (Luchino Visconti, 1943), a film universally recognised as a masterpiece and foundational work of Italian neorealism, which has inspired new realist film currents and independent productions around the globe. Accordingly, it has been scrutinised from a variety of angles by successive generations of scholars. Yet, as is the case with any masterpiece of this magnitude, the possibilities of novel approaches to it are inexhaustible. In this chapter, I revisit the crucial topic of realism in Ossessione through a perspective hitherto underexplored in scholarship on the film, namely the contribution of opera and music to its realist endeavour. Under this light, Ossessione changes into an accomplished example of the aspiration to the total artwork.

Among the families that have influenced the development of modern medicine into what it is today, the Monro lineage stands as one of the most notable. Alexander Monro primus (1697–1767) was the first of 3 generations with the same name, a dynasty that spanned 126 years occupying the Chair of Anatomy one after the other at the University of Edinburgh. After becoming Professor of Anatomy at the University of Edinburgh in 1719, Monro primus played a principal role in the establishment of the University of Edinburgh School of Medicine and the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. In 1726, he published The Anatomy of the Humane Bones, of which 8 editions were printed during his lifetime. His son, Alexander Monro secundus (1733–1817), arguably the most notable of the 3 men, succeeded him as Professor of Anatomy. A highly regarded lecturer and anatomist, Monro secundus studied under many great physicians, including William Hunter and Johann Friedrich Meckel the Elder, and was also teacher to other well-known figures at the time, such as Joseph Black and Thomas Trotter. His most notable contributions include his work with the lymphatic system, the interventricular foramen (of Monro), and the Monro-Kellie doctrine. Alexander Monro tertius (1773–1859), the last of the dynasty, also succeeded his father as Professor of Anatomy. His work included insights into abdominal aortic aneurysms and the anatomy of the genitourinary system. The prominent association of the Monro family with the University of Edinburgh and the effects of a tenured professorship under the concept of “Ad vitam aut culpam” over successive generations are also described. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this historical review of the Monro family is among the few published in neurosurgical literature. A vivid historical overview of the medical contributions of the most famous and influential dynasty of physicians in Edinburgh at that time is provided, with relevant excerpts from original publications.

The fifty-second meeting of the Modern Language Associationof America was held, on the invitation of the University of Cincinnati, at Cincinnati, Ohio, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, December 30 and 31, 1935, and January 1, 1936. The Association headquarters were in the Netherland Plaza Hotel, where all meetings were held except those of Tuesday morning and afternoon. These took place at the University of Cincinnati. Registration cards at headquarters were signed by about 900, though a considerably larger number of members were in attendance. The Local Committee estimated the attendance at not less than 1400. This Committee consisted of Professor Frank W. Chandler, Chairman; Professor Edwin H. Zeydel; Professor Phillip Ogden; Mr. John J. Rowe (for the Directors); and Mr. Joseph S. Graydon (for the Alumni).

Nowadays more and more of the reductions of astronomical data are made with electronic computers. As we in Uppsala have an IBM 1620 at the University, we have taken it to our help with reductions of spectrophotometric data. Here I will briefly explain how we use it now and how we want to use it in the near future.
