Re-appraisal of the taxonomy of Acacia holosericea, including the description of a new species, A. Colei, and the reinstatement of A. Neurocarpa

The taxonomic status of Acacia holosericea A. CUM. ex Don is re-appraised in the light of recent isozyme, chromosome and field studies, as well as from a critical examination of specimens at BM, BRI, K, DNA and PERTH. Accordingly, A. holosericea, as traditionally defined, is now regarded as comprising three distinct species, each corresponding to a dierent level of ploidy. Acacia holosericea A. Cum. ex Don (tetraploid) is widespread, principally in tropical/subtropical areas of Western Australia, the Northern Territory and Queensland. Acacia neurocarpa A. Cunn. ex Hook. (diploid), occurs in tropical/subtropical Western Australia and the Northern Temtory and until now has been regarded as conspecific with A. holosericea. Acacia colei Mash & Thomson (hexaploid) is described as a new species which appears to have evolved as an allopolyploid hybrid between A. neurocarpa and A. cowleana (tetraploid). It is widespread and common in subtropical/arid Western Australia, the Northern Territory and Queensland. These four species are illustrated, mapped and their principal discriminating features given in tabular form and in a key. Acacia holosericea is neotypified to exclude A. neurocarpa, and A. neurocarpa is lectotypified to exclude A. dunnii (Maiden) Turrill.

Pyura stolonifera is a large solitary ascidian found in Africa, Australasia and South America. The taxonomic status of different populations of this species is disputed, especially since there is evidence for several distinct morphological and genetic units that point towards the existence of multiple cryptic species. While some researchers still recognize P. stolonifera as a single species, others treat the different populations as distinct species. Here, we present a revision of the P. stolonifera species complex based on the examination of samples from all regions where there are reliable reports of this taxon. We recognize four species that are both morphologically and genetically distinct, one of which is new to science and is formally described here. This species is morphologically distinct from the other three members of the species complex in terms of the colour and texture of the tunic, the arrangement of the gonads within the gut and the shape of the dorsal tubercle, among other characters. We name the new species Pyura dalbyi after Dr. J.E. Dalby Jr., whose research on its ecology and distribution provided the incentive for examining this species more closely.

A chromosomal analysis of gekkos of the Gehyra australis complex from the Alligator Rivers region of the Northern Territory indicates that those animals living on trees or human habitation have 2n=40 chromosomes, whereas those living on the rock outliers and cliffs of the Arnhem Land escarpment have 2n=42. A morphological analysis of these specimens shows that two distinct species are present: Gehyra australis and a new species, which is described below as Gehyra pamela.

Acacia valida, a new species of Acacia subgenus Acacia from the northern parts of the Northern Territory and Western Australia is described and illustrated. A lectotype is selected for Acacia pachyphloia and two subspecies are recognised. Acacia pachyphloia subsp. pachyphloia occurs in the Northern Territory and north Western Australia, and A. pachyphloia subsp. brevipirznula subsp. nov. occurs in north Western Australia.

Explanations are made for the choice of a neotype from Kurnell, Botany Bay, N.S.W., Australia. A new combination is made for G. microphylla from Australia (Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania) and Norfolk Island. A new species, G. arenaria, is described from the East Kimberley District of Western Australia, and the Northern Territory. The three species are illustrated in detail. Keys are provided to distinguish these taxa from their allies.

Silene sunhangii, a new species of Caryophyllaceae known from only three populations in Hubei and Hunan provinces of central China, is described. Both morphological and molecular data were used to assess the taxonomic status and relationships of this species. Morphologically, S. sunhangii is most similar to S. platyphylla Franch. from which it differs most readily in having 3-veined elliptical leaves without pubescence, tasseled catacorolla, pale purple to red petals without a linear lobe or narrow tooth and lanceolate, bifid to one third. A phylogenetic analysis based on nuclear ITS region identified the new species as a well-supported, independent lineage. Our new species is nested within a grade that encompasses species representing a polyphyletic Silene sect. Physolychnis (Benth.) Bocquet. Both the genetic and morphological data support the recognition of Silene sunhangii as a distinct species, although there is inconsistency between these two datasets as to the relationships of the new species.

The genus Corynotheca F.Muell. ex Benth. is revised and Corynotheca borealis R.L.Barrett, Keighery & T.Macfarlane is described as a new species from the east Kimberley region of Western Australia and the adjacent Northern Territory. Corynotheca dichotoma (F.Muell.) F.Muell. ex Benth. is reinstated for a species growing on yellow sands in the Mid West of Western Australia. The taxonomic and geographic limits of varieties of C. micrantha (Lindl.) Druce are reconsidered and all are recognised at specific rank. Four new combinations are made: Corynotheca divaricata (R.J.F.Hend.) R.L.Barrett & T.Macfarlane, Corynotheca elongata (R.J.F.Hend.) R.L.Barrett & T.Macfarlane, Corynotheca gracilis (R.J.F.Hend.) R.L.Barrett & T.Macfarlane and Corynotheca panda (R.J.F.Hend.) R.L.Barrett & T.Macfarlane. All are illustrated and a revised key to the thirteen species of Corynotheca recognised is provided.

The Rutherglen bug is a well-known pest of fruit trees, vines and other crops in Australia, and has been recorded from every State in the Commonwealth, even Western Australia not being free from it.The identity of this insect has been uncertain for some time past, although it has been assumed in economic literature that the species described by Bergroth in 1891 as Nystus vinitor is identical with the Rutherglen bug, since it is the only representative of the genus Nysius to have been described from Australia.In 1927 Mr. R. Veitch, Chief Entomologist of the Department of Agriculture and Stock, Brisbane, sent a collection of Nysius spp. to the Imperial Bureau of Entomology for determination. They were handed over to Mr. W. E. China, of the British Museum, to whom I am indebted for the very considerable assistance given me in the preparation of this paper.The collection, which consisted of a number of insects off different plants and from various localities, contained two distinct species, one of which agreed with Bergroth's very inadequate description of N. vinitor (I have not seen the type) ; the other turns out to be a new species, which I propose to name Nysius clevelandensis, since all the locality labels of this insect were marked Cleveland.

The genus Agrotera Schrank, 1802 is revised for Australia and the generic definition is refined based on the male genitalia. The genera Leucinodella Strand, 1918 stat. rev. with L. leucostola (Hampson, 1896) comb. nov., Nistra Walker, 1859 stat. rev. with N. coelatalis Walker, 1859 comb. rev., Sagariphora Meyrick, 1894 stat. rev. with S. magnificalis (Hampson, 1893) comb. nov., and Tetracona Meyrick, 1884 stat. rev. with T. amathealis (Walker, 1859) comb. rev. and T. pictalis Warren, 1896 comb. rev. are removed from synonymy with Agrotera, as they lack the synapomorphies of Agrotera. Two new species, Agrotera genuflexa sp. nov. from Northern Territory, Queensland and New South Wales, and A. longitabulata sp. nov. from Queensland, are described. The taxonomic status of the Australian species of Agrotera is discussed, and a key to all species, based on males, is provided. The adults and genitalia of the new species and some related species are figured.
