Fruit characteristics of table fig (Ficus carica) cultivars in subtropical climate conditions of the Mediterranean region

Seven apricot cultivars (“Beliana,” “Canino,” “Precoce de Colomer,” “Feriana,” “Rouge de Sernhac,” “Tokaloğlu,” and “Macar”) were evaluated at the experimental orchard of the Department of Horticulture, Faculty of Agriculture, Mustafa Kemal University, Hatay, Turkey. Phenological and pomological characteristics such as flowering period, average fruit weight, yield, fruit dimensions, flesh/seed ratio, acidity, and total soluble solids (TSSs) were examined. In addition, yield parameters of the cultivars were evaluated. Over four years, the highest average fruit weight was obtained from “Rouge de Sernhac” (37.9 g), while “Feriana” had the lowest (30.9 g). The flesh/seed ratio was the highest in the “Canino” (16.8). “Canino” had the highest TSS content with 14.5%, whereas “Beliana” had the lowest TSS value with 10.6%. “Beliana” and “Feriana” ripened the earliest (May 20) while “Precoce de Colomer” ripened latest (June 7). The average yield was highest on “Rouge de Sernhac” (41.2 kg/tree). “Beliana” and “Feriana” cultivars are recommended for precocity, and “Rouge de Sernhac” and “Tokaloğlu” for middle season in Dörtyol, Turkey.

Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) operation under conventional fully nitrifying activated sludge BNR schemes, although favoured by the temperate climate conditions prevailing around the Mediterranean region, may prove quite inefficient in terms of both capital and O&M costs when recipient body characteristics do not pose similar requirements; especially more so, when treated effluents are intended for reuse in agriculture and nitrogen content may well serve as fertilizer. This paper presents some experimental evidence that single-reactor partial nitrification schemes, allowing for nitrogen removal to the extent needed under seasonally varying plant loading conditions and effluent quality requirements, and securing reliable and efficient plant operation, may be a more suitable alternative for similar cases.

Abstract. Future climate projections show higher/lower winter (Dec-Jan-Feb) precipitation in the northern/southern Mediterranean region than in present climate conditions. This paper analyzes the results of regional model simulations of the A2 and B2 scenarios, which confirm this opposite precipitation change and link it to the change of cyclone activity. The increase of the winter cyclone activity in future climate scenarios over western Europe is responsible for the larger precipitation at the northern coast of the basin, though the bulk of the change is located outside the Mediterranean region. The reduction of cyclone activity inside the Mediterranean region in future scenarios is responsible for the lower precipitation at the southern and eastern Mediterranean coast.

<p>Model simulations of the last glacial maximum (LGM) and RCP8.5 projections suggest that factors responsible for past and future changes in the Mediterranean region are different.  The wet LGM conditions were determined mainly by low evaporation, with some increase of precipitation in the western areas, while dry rcp8.5 conditions will be driven by a reduction of precipitation over the whole region. These changes were caused by atmospheric dynamics (changes of mean atmospheric circulation ) in LGM and it will be caused by the atmospheric thermodynamics (reduction of mean moisture content ) in the future rcp8.5. In both cases, the Mediterranean region appears to be more sensitive to climate change than the rest of areas within the same latitudinal range, particularly considering the hydrological cycle, whose characteristics in winter exhibit large changes between these two different climates. These conclusions emerge from the substantial consensus among six PMIP3 and CMIP5 models, simulating LGM, pre-Industrial and rcp8.5 climate conditions.</p>
