This is an empirical investigation considering how the Knowledge Transfer Openness Matrix (KTOM) could facilitate accessibility and Knowledge Transfer (KT) for the UK Higher Education (HE) Management Education Teaching when utilising learning technologies. Its focus is where learning technologies applications currently assist the KT process and support accessibility for the HE teacher and learner. It considers the philosophy of openness, focusing on its usefulness to support accessibility within UK HE Management Education Teaching. It discusses how the openness philosophy may assist the KT process for the HE teacher and learners using learning technologies. In particular, the potential to support accessibility within HE Management Education Teaching environments is appraised. There appear several implications for both teachers and learners. These are characterized in the proposed KTOM. The matrix organises KT events based on the principles of the openness philosophy. The role of learning technologies in events is illustrated with regard to teaching and learning accessibility.

The growing prevalence of continuous media use among university students in lecture environments has potential for detrimental effects. In this study we investigate the relationships between in-lecture media use and academic performance. Previous studies have shown that students frequently engage with digital media whilst in university lectures. Moreover, multitasking imposes cognitive costs detrimental to learning and task execution. We propose, accordingly, that the constant distractions created by digital media, interrupt the thought and communication processes of students during lectures and, subsequently, obstruct their ability to learn. To test this proposition we conducted a survey-based empirical investigation of digital media use and academic performance among undergraduate university students. A significant negative correlation was found between the number of in-lecture media use instances and academic performance. Furthermore, this effect was found to be pervasive independent of individual demographic factors and the intention with which a medium was used.

Given the highly competitive nature of MBA admission, one cannot help asking the question if the criteria used in the admission decisions are predictable for success in management courses offered at various B-Schools. This paper tries to explain the determinants of performance of students who are enrolled in regular MBA program in an Indian B-School. The study is conducted on first year students of a premiere B-School using multiple regression. Study shows that performance of MBA student in the course is not determined by their earlier academic performance. It can be explained only by the student's exposure to the course contents either through previous experience or otherwise. Academic performance is also explained by motivation to learn, or the efforts student put during the course. This study has implications for management education not only in the area of admission decision but also in area of teaching methods.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to suggest a methodology for evaluating the effectiveness of the flipped classroom (FC) model over traditional lecture-based teaching. It also proposed a tool to measure students’ perception toward the flipped approach in context of Indian management education. Design/methodology/approach This study employs an experimental research design to assess the effectiveness of the FC pedagogy over traditional teaching methods. Both qualitative and quantitative research methods are used in order to judge student engagement, content understanding, students’ perception and student academic performance. Experimental research design, along with survey research, is implemented in order to judge the students’ perception toward FCs. Findings The study proposes a six-dimensional tool to measure learning in an FC setting. These dimensions are as follows: students’ in-class involvement, comprehensive content understanding, students’ academic performance, students’ cognitive capabilities, collaborative learning environment and students’ inclination toward teaching and learning process. Results of this research are promising and encouraging toward the adoption of the FC model. Research limitations/implications The present research work is limited to assess the effectiveness of FC teaching for a management subject. Future studies may be carried out in other management subjects and other streams. Practical implications The present study provides several valuable insights for future researchers, academicians and management institutions. Although implementation of flipped approach leads to a collaborative learning environment and prepares students for self-learning, it also offers educationalists to remodel their teaching pedagogy as per students’ learning and understanding needs. Originality/value The research demonstrates the successful implementation of qualitative and quantitative research techniques to evaluate the effectiveness of FC model in context of management education in India.
