IntroductionThe quality of long-term care provided to people with dementia (PwD) in care homes can be improved by implementing person-centered care. Family carers of PwD living in care homes are an important part of person-centered care. However, they often experience high levels of burden, even when a family member with dementia lives in a care home. This study examines trends in the involvement of family carers and their perceived role, role overload and self-efficacy.MethodsData from the Living Arrangements for People with Dementia study, a cross-sectional monitoring study that evaluates developments in care for PwD in care homes in the Netherlands, with four measurement cycles between 2008-2017 was used. Data from the three most current measurement cycles were used, with respectively 144, 47 and 49 participating care homes and 888, 392 and 401 participating family carers. Family involvement was measured by the number of hours per week that family carers visited the PwD and the type of activities they undertook. Perceived caregiving role was measured with the Family Perceptions of Caregiving Role instrument. We used the Self-Perceived Pressure by Informal Care to measure role overload and a 37-item questionnaire was used to measure self-efficacy. We investigated the changes over time (e.g., measurement cycles) of these measures.ResultsThe number of hours that family carers visited the PwD did not change over time. However, there was a trend towards an increase in the variety of activities they undertook. Their perceived caregiving role did not change over time. Self-efficacy of family carers increased over time and they reported more feelings of role overload.ConclusionsDuring the past decade, there has been an increasing trend towards family carers doing more diverse activities with PwD in carer homes. Family carers did feel more competent in their caring role, although their feelings of role overload also increased. Continuing attention is therefore needed for the psychological well-being of family carers after a person with dementia moves to a care home.

A replication of a previously reported fieldwork evaluation study is presented. The study involved a comparison of a typical, year-long fieldwork placement composed of three distinct rotations, each approximately 10 weeks in length. The sample included 23 social work students in a large, urban, public hospital. Changes in students' general sense of self-efficacy, self-efficacy regarding specific professional activities, and perceptions of both their ideal and actual work environment were assessed. In general, results very similar to the original study were observed. There were ho significant intergroup differences and virtually no changes in students' general sense of self-efficacy. There were no significant intergroup differences in student's self-efficacy regarding hospital social work, but for the group as a whole, there were significant increases over the course of the academic year. The trend was for rotation students to view the work environment more positively.

Purpose – Work engagement represents an important aspect of employee well-being and performance and has been related to both job and personal resources. The purpose of this paper, based on Social Cognitive Theory, is to emphasize the proactive role of self-efficacy which is hypothesized to predict work engagement, not only directly, but also indirectly through positive changes in employee’s perceptions of social context (PoSC); namely, perceptions of one’s immediate supervisor, colleagues and top management. Design/methodology/approach – A sample of 741 employees of a communication service company completed two questionnaires, with a time interval of three years. Structural equation modeling was performed in order to test the hypothesized model. Findings – Results revealed that, as expected: first, initial self-efficacy predicts work engagement three years later; and second, positive changes in employee’s perceptions of the social work context across the three year period, mediates the relationship between self-efficacy and work engagement. Research limitations/implications – Results relied only upon self-report data. Moreover, each variable was only measured at the time in which it was hypothesized by the conceptual model. Practical implications – The significant role of self-efficacy as a direct and indirect predictor of work engagement suggests the development of training programs centered on the main sources of self-efficacy, specifically focussed on the social work domain. Originality/value – This research provides evidence of the substantial contribution of self-efficacy to work engagement over time. Moreover, the results also support the beneficial effects of self-efficacy through its influence on the improvements in the individuals’ perceptions of their social context.

Social work educators are concerned about how best to equip social work students with the ability to self-reflect, because this is a core professional competence. The present study employed both quantitative and qualitative means to evaluate a course which set out to foster reflexivity among social work undergraduates. A quasi-experimental design was employed to examine the effectiveness of the course. Data were collected at pre-course, post-course, and 6 months after completion. We found that, over time, students in the experimental group gained more insight. The students disclosed in focus group interviews that the course had enhanced their understanding toward self, family, and society. The implications for social work education are discussed.

This teaching note describes my experience discovering and addressing challenges to graduating baccalaureate social work students' self-efficacy, particularly on the use of a substance-use-oriented evidence-based practice (EBP) in fieldwork placements. This discovery led to the development of an exercise, presented here, to proactively identify and address such challenges. The exercise consists of a structured discussion that invokes theory and professional responsibility, followed by the instructor modeling role playing for the class. The exercise culminates in dyadic role playing between students with individualized feedback provided by the professor. In addition to promoting student self-efficacy, the exercise is designed to address practice competencies specified by the Council on Social Work Education's Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards and specifically to promote the use of EBP in the field.
