The Russian National Public Library for Science and Technology has traditionally been and is currently acquiring Russian language paper materials by receiving deposit copies from the Russian Book Chamber. The concept of pervasiveness of a deposit copy dictates the need to use external digital resources – electronic libraries, archives and collections, electronic library systems. Acquiring of all of these sources of information depending on their access features and specifics of library services also meets the definition of «collection development». The article provides a general view of the collection of the Russian National Public Library for Science and Technology and the ways of its development. Specific examples show the status of some library materials available online. Reasons are offered in support of using remote access electronic resources as well as widening the variety of library materials and making subscription models more flexible.

Australia appears to be lagging behind countries in North America and Europe regarding the participation of women in engineering, science and technology courses and careers. This chapter reports on a current project undertaken by a regional university to build a mentoring and support network among female Science, Engineering and Technology students, staff and industry professionals. As well as the context and history of the project, the chapter describes the activities undertaken and the challenges faced in making the project sustainable. Factors critical to the success of the project are identified and include securing funds and commitment from senior management, having a multi-disciplinary team with strong leadership and effective support, and using information technology to enhance personal networks and to promote activities.

This chapter aims to discuss the potential of digital libraries to offer unparalleled resources for supporting open distance e-learning (ODeL). This chapter addresses and discusses such features as what is meant by ODeL and how it can be supported by the library and the functionality of the digital library, and how ODeL resources are included and organised in the digital library environment. The chapter explores the advantages of digital libraries for ODeL and the types of learning that can be supported by digital libraries. There is surely an interest in the usage of electronic resources for teaching, learning, and research, but this appears to be matched by a lack of awareness of how best to assimilate these resources into ODeL. The chapter provides valuable insight into the role and influence of digital libraries and e-resources on ODeL.
