Tailors work in a static position and bend over with a relatively long duration of workPostural muscle load on tailors results in the risk of complaints of low back pain which affects the productivity of tailor. The aim is to know the effect of improving working conditions through a participatory ergonomics approach to reduce low back pain complaints and increase tailor productivity. The method uses of experimental research with treatment by subject design, involving 9 samples selected by simple random sampling. Period 1 sample is working with conventional working conditions. Period 2 samples worked with improving working conditions through a participatory ergonomics approach. Washing out period and adaptation are given between the two periods. Complaints of low back pain were measured by the Oswestry Disability Index, while productivity was based on a comparison between the number of stitches/day and the score for complaints of low back pain per working time. The results showed that improving working conditions through a participatory ergonomics approach had a significant effect (p < 0.05). There was a decreasing in low back pain by 11.87% from an average of 48.67±1.73 to 42.89±1.76 and an increasing in productivity of 42.10% from an average of 0.038±0.004 to 0.054±0.005.

A large-scale project to introduce a participatory ergonomics approach into one hundred health care establishments in France was conducted by a hospital sector union. The project took the form of ergonomics training provided to union delegates to committees responsible for health, safety and working conditions. Data on the project's progress and results show that when unions had assimilated an ergonomic approach, the view that hospital actors (employees, union members, management) had of one another was modified, as were their relations concerning working condition issues. The conditions for the success, extension and durability of this approach are discussed.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze work system improvements of home industries in Yogyakarta City,
based on participatory ergonomics approach. WISH (Work Improvement for Safe Home) action checklist
has been used as the instrument to analyse and evaluate the working conditions. WISH programme is
an action manual published by ILO (International Labour Organization) to improve work conditions of
home manufacturing by using a participatory approach. The working conditions in WISH action checklist
covers five aspects; i.e. materials storage and handling, machine safety, work stations, physical environment,
and welfare facilities and work organization. The early step in this study was identification of general
characteristics of home industries in Yogyakarta City. The results of identification were used as input in
developing improvement actions. Analysis was done to determine the priority among all improvement aspects
and improvement actions based on WISH action checklist. The findings show the most priority aspect of
improvement was Work Stations aspects with index priority 0.172. The action needed for the most priority
improvement aspect was developed by consideration of home industries characteristics.
