Abstract: This small scale study explored the interprofessional interactions that occur in practice between students and other professionals. The students completed a one week structured diary of their contact with other professionals, using these two proximity categories: Proximity 1 – within speaking distance but no interaction with the other professional or Proximity 2 – having direct interaction with the other professional. Eight students participated in the study and 31 different professionals were listed. The results varied between students from different year groups and on different courses. Each student recorded different experiences and there was a large variety in the interprofessional interactions that were recorded. The data collected will allow real experiences from practice to be used in interprofessional learning sessions and the results of this study can be used to illustrate to students which professional groups they are likely to encounter in practice.Keywords: Interprofessional education; Health and social care education; Communication; Interactions

Purpose – It is well recognised that individuals have much to contribute to the care that they receive, with attendant benefits on outcomes and reduction in cost. The recognition of individuals who access care services as interdependent citizens embedded in both formal and informal support networks is a shift that acknowledges their active role as partners in management of their own care and in service innovation and development. The purpose of this paper is therefore to explore and illustrate some of the domains of co-production. Design/methodology/approach – In this paper, the authors review the literature, both peer-reviewed and professional, in order to provide a broad and contemporary commentary on this emergent approach. This literature is critically summarised and presented along with a narrative that discusses the context in Wales, where the authors are based. The approach to this paper is to bring together existing knowledge and also propose potential avenues for further research and practise development. Findings – There is a diverse literature on this topic and the application of co-production appears potentially transformational within health and social care. Implementation of the principles of co-production has the potential to improve health and social care services in a range of settings. Real changes in outcomes and experience and reduction in societal cost can be achieved by making the people of Wales active partners in the design and delivery of their own health and social care. Originality/value – This review offers a readily accessible commentary on co-production, which may be of value to a wide range of professional groups and policy makers. This paper also reflects an original attempt to summarise knowledge and propose further areas for work. Most importantly, this paper offers a start point for co-production to become a reality for service provision with all the attendant benefits that will arise from this development.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to consider the final report of the Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust Public Inquiry and the Law Commissions’ review of health and social care professional regulation – and how these will impact on the professional regulation bodies. Design/methodology/approach – Summary and discussion of the relevant recommendations made by the Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust Public Inquiry and the initial Government response, and consultation responses to the Law Commissions’ provisional proposals for law reform of health and social care professional regulation. Findings – Future legislation is likely to be based on the recommendations of the Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust Public Inquiry and the Law Commissions. Originality/value – Overview of the Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust Public Inquiry and the initial Government response, and consultation responses to the Law Commissions.

Abstract Background Introducing Health and Social Care Professional (HSCP) teams to the emergency department (ED) has increasingly demonstrated benefits for ED patient and process outcomes. However, there is a dearth of research exploring the views of key ED stakeholders on the role of HSCP teams in care delivery the ED. This qualitative study investigated the perspectives of a wide range of ED stakeholders about HSCPs teams working in the ED. Methods A total of 65 participants including older adults who had recently attended the ED and their carers/relatives, ED doctors and nurses, HSCPs and pre-hospital staff participated in four World Café style focus groups and individual interviews across two Irish hospital sites. Written and audio-recorded data were transcribed and thematically analysed. Results Overall, participants expressed positive views on HSCPs working in teams in the ED, with benefits for patients, staff members and the hospital (Theme 1). Having an ED-based HSCP team was described as promoting effective and timely decision-making and a more integrated approach to patient care, particularly for frail older adults with complex needs (Theme 2). Barriers and enablers for effective implementation were identified at multiple levels (Theme 3) including the ED physical environment, (e.g., space and equipment), operational factors (e.g., working hours), and relations (e.g., patient-staff or staff-staff communication); factors at system level included availability of community resources and financial pressures. Conclusion Our study indicates overall acceptability of HSCPs working in teams in the ED and positive views on their contribution to enhance the quality care of older adults. However, a number of operational and relational factors need to be considered to ensure feasibility and effectiveness. This information is crucial to inform implementation.
