Nanotechnology is currently a hot topic in dermatology and nutraceutical/cosmeceutical delivery, owing to the advantages it provides in terms of enhancing the skin permeation of drugs, as well as increasing their therapeutic efficacy in the treatment of different dermatological diseases. There is also a great interest in the topical delivery of nutraceuticals; which are natural compounds with both therapeutic and cosmetic benefits, in order to overcome the side effects of topically applied chemical drugs. Quercetin is a key nutraceutical with topical antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties which was reported to be effective in the treatment of different dermatological diseases, however, its topical therapeutic activity is hindered by its poor skin penetration. This review highlights the topical applications of quercetin, and summarizes the nanocarrier-based solutions to its percutaneous delivery challenges.

Background & Objective: Nanoparticles are used in cosmetic and dermatologic products, due to better skin penetration properties. Incorporation of natural products exhibiting medicinal properties in nano-preparations could significantly improve efficacy of these products and improve the quality of life without the side effects of synthetic formulations. Methods: We here report green synthesis of Copper Oxide nanoparticles, using Cucumber extract, and their detailed biophysical and bio-chemical characterization. Results: These Copper Oxide-Cucumber nanoparticles exhibit significant anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties, Ultra Violet-radiation protection ability and reactive-oxygen species inhibition properties. Importantly, these nanoparticles do not exhibit significant cellular toxicity and, when incorporated in skin cream, exhibit skin rejuvenating properties. Conclusion: Our findings have implications for nanoparticle-based cosmetics and dermatologic applications.

Partial N-deacetylation of compound II with barium hydroxide afforded benzyl 2-acetamido-3-O-allyl-4-O-(2-amino-2-deoxy-4,6-O-isopropylidene-β-D-glucopyranosyl)-6-O,-benzyl-2-deoxy-α-D-glucopyranoside (III) in high yield. Compound III was N-acylated with stearic acid in the presence of DCC and the obtained product was converted into benzyl 2-acetamido-6-O-benzyl-3-O-carboxymethyl-2-deoxy-4-O-(3,4,6-tri-O-benzyl-2-deoxy-2-stearoylamino-β-D-glucopyranosyl)-α-D-glucopyranoside (VII). Coupling of compound VII with L-α-aminobutanoyl-D-isoglutamine benzyl ester followed by hydrogenolysis of the product VIII afforded compound IX.
