I review recent applications of the open quantum system framework in the understanding of quarkonium suppression in heavy-ion collisions, which has been used as a probe of the quark–gluon plasma for decades. The derivation of the Lindblad equations for quarkonium in both the quantum Brownian motion and the quantum optical limits and their semiclassical counterparts is explained. The hierarchy of time scales assumed in the derivation is justified from the separation of energy scales in nonrelativistic effective field theories of QCD. Physical implications of the open quantum system approach are also discussed. Finally, I list some open questions for future studies.

We present a method to calculate the real time effective propagator of a generic open quantum system, immersed in a medium using a wave function based framework. The medium is characterized by a set of harmonic oscillators having a continuous span of frequencies. This technique has been applied to the Caldeira–Leggett model showing that high frequency modes of the medium do not contribute towards decay of the population of states of the open system. In fact, they cause a Rabi-type oscillation. Moreover, our wave function based approach provides an excellent alternative to conventional formalisms involving the density matrix.

In the frame of the Lindblad theory of open quantum systems, the spherical harmonic oscillator with opening operators linear in the coordinates and the momenta of the considered system is analyzed. Explicit expressions for the damping of the energy, angular momentum and its projection, including the coupling of the harmonic oscillator due to the environment, are obtained.
