As the gate pier bracket of an arch dam are of complex structure which is characterized by use of high-grade concrete and more cement, higher adiabatic temperature rise, it is rather difficult to control temperature and vulnerable for cracking, and the cracks would absolutely affect the integrity, endurance and safety of pier gate bracket. It is necessary to take reasonable temperature control measures to reduce temperature stress during the construction and prevent cracking. This paper takes the gate pier bracket at the middle-hole dam section to perform simulation analysis of temperature field and stress field under different temperature control measures by 3D FEM. It proves that such measures as densifying water pipes, improving Phase I target cooling temperature appropriately, reducing Phase I cooling temperature falling variation and keeping insulation in low-temperature season can help reduce temperature stress and prevent cracking with good results.

Main factors of the temperature control and crack prevention in arch dams are summarized. The Space-time Dynamic Control method in pipe cooling process and the Temperature Real-time Control and Decision Database System are introduced to help for temperature real-time control and rapid analysis. Successful application of these new techniques in the construction of Dagangshan arch dam indicates that the proposed method are of significant effectiveness on the temperature control and crack prevention, and have good application prospect in practical project.

Due to complex structure, large scale, and cold climate, the temperature field and stress field during construction of BoYi Station is different with ordinary mass concrete. Therefore the corresponding crack prevention method must be explored. In order to simulate the complicated construction course, cold climate, multiple materials and unusual structure, a finite element program is adopted. In 5 numerical simulation cases, different temperature control methods are tried to decrease the tensile stress of mass concrete. Based on the simulation analysis and combined with the engineering experience, the scheme and indexes of temperature control and crack prevention are recommended. The mainly measures are controlling pouring temperature, insulation of concrete surface, pipe cooling, block partition and extra steel bar reinforcement. The values of temperature indexes are sharply lower than that of ordinary hydropower station mass concrete. The suggested measures and indexes in this paper, which are various with season, structure position and material, may provide some reference to similar large hydropower station workshop in cold area.

In the present study, we investigate the effect of the adiabatic temperature rise property of rock-fill concrete (RFC) on the temperature stress and crack resistance of RFC gravity dams. We conducted tests on the adiabatic temperature rise of RFC with a rock-fill ratio of 42%, 49%, and 55%, respectively. Based on the regression analysis of the test data, a calculation model of the adiabatic temperature rise, considering the rock-fill ratio, is developed, and the finite element analysis software ANSYS is employed to simulate the whole process of the temperature and temperature stress fields of a RFC gravity dam. The main findings of the study are as follows: (1) Both the adiabatic temperature rise rate and the final adiabatic temperature rise of RFC are negatively correlated with the rock-fill ratio. (2) The calculation model of the adiabatic temperature rise of RFC is characterized by its high accuracy, which can help predict the adiabatic temperature rise of RFC with different rock-fill ratios. (3) Without any temperature control measures, the maximum temperature stress of RFC generated by the temperature rise of hydration heat in the RFC gravity dam is 0.93 MPa, which meets the standard of temperature stress control. The results of the present study indicate that dam construction with RFC can simplify the measures of temperature control and crack prevention, improve the construction efficiency, and reduce the cost of dam construction.

The dam concrete material properties wre influenced by the implementation of temperature control measures on site. The weekly temperature evaluation system has been set up in order to evaluate current temperature control measures, combining with the distributed optical fiber temperature control techniques and construction technical requirements. The system has been applied to a concrete arch dam under construction in southwest China which established multi-objective fuzzy mathematical model by synthetic weighting method that was a combination of experts scoring method and entropy weight method. Practice shows that the system can estimate weak link of this week and give guidance to the temperature control’s adjustment of the following week.
