Abstract This paper describes a handheld type aerial haptic device with 6 DoF (degree of freedom) using pseudo-haptics by asymmetric vibration. By introducing a original presentation force vectoring mechanism, 6 DoF force sense presentation and compactness suitable for handheld use with a small number of vibrators are realized together. In addition, a relationship between the drive input and output (presentation force sense) of the developed device is formulated, and its inverse problem solving method for obtaining the drive input that realizes a desired presentation force sense is derived. Furthermore, a user test clarified the direction in which this device can / cannot effectively exert force.

In the present paper, asymmetric vibration of polar orthotropic annular circular plates of quadratically varying thickness resting on Winkler elastic foundation is studied by using boundary characteristic orthonormal polynomials in Rayleigh-Ritz method. Convergence of the results is tested and comparison is made with results already available in the existing literature. Numerical results for the first ten frequencies for various values of parameters describing width of annular plate, thickness profile, material orthotropy and foundation constant for all three possible combinations of clamped, simply supported and free edge conditions are shown and discussed. It is found that (a) higher elastic property in circumferential direction leads to higher stiffness against lateral vibration; (b) Lateral vibration characteristics ofF-Fplatesis more sensitive towards parametric changes in material orthotropy and foundation stiffness thanC-CandS-Splates; (c) Effect of quadratical thickness variation on fundamental frequency is more significant in cases ofC-CandS-S platesthan that ofF-Fplates. Thickness profile which is convex relative to plate center-line tends to result in higher stiffness of annular plates against lateral vibration than the one which is concave and (d) Fundamental mode of vibration ofC-CandS-Splatesis axisymmetrical while that ofF-Fplatesis asymmetrical.

This paper presents the response of symmetric crossply laminated shallow shells with an internal resonance ω2≈ω3, where ω2 and ω3 are the linear natural frequencies of the asymmetric vibration modes (2,1) and (1,2), respectively. Galerkin’s procedure is applied to the nonlinear governing equations for the shells based on the von Ka´rma´n-type geometric nonlinear theory and the first-order shear deformation theory, and the shooting method is used to obtain the steady-state response when a driving frequency Ω is near ω2. In order to take into account the influence of quadratic nonlinearities, the displacement functions of the shells are approximated by the eigenfunctions for the linear vibration mode (1,1) in addition to the ones for the modes (2,1) and (1,2). This approximation overcomes the shortcomings in Galerkin’s procedure. In the numerical examples, the effect of the (1,1) mode on the primary resonance of the (2,1) mode is examined in detail, which allows us to conclude that the consideration of the (1,1) mode is indispensable for analyzing nonlinear vibrations of asymmetric vibration modes of shells.
