Cyclic loading-induced deformation of soil is a common problem in the engineering practice. In the current practice, however, monotonic triaxial tests are more commonly used in the practice, due to the availability of apparatus and ease of operation. Thus, it will be very useful and practical if the monotonic triaxial tests can be used to evaluate the behavior of soil under cyclic loading. This study aims to find an explicit relationship between monotonic and cyclic behavior of saturated soft clay. Six monotonic and nine cyclic triaxial compression tests were conducted on undisturbed saturated soft clay under an undrained condition. The test results showed that the monotonic and cyclic tests shared the same stress-strain surface in a three-dimensional space p^'-q-ε_a. It is also found possible to evaluate the effective stress states of cyclic tests at two specific numbers of cycles, using corresponding monotonic tests. Based on these two findings, a simple procedure was then proposed to predict the peak axial strain for the saturated soft clay under different cyclic loadings based on the monotonic tests and only one cyclic test, which was further verified against more test data from the previous literature.

Simulating traffic loading, the high liquid limit clay specimens and the low liquid limit clay specimens of the Pearl River delta are engaged in cyclic triaxial tests under one-way cyclic loading respectively. The influence of axial stress, confining stress and plasticity index are taken into account. A critical dynamic stress ratio of saturated soft clay under one-way cyclic loading and the variations of axis strain and pore pressure with number of cycles were obtained. The conclusions are helpful to compute the settlement of saturated soft foundation under traffic loading after work.

The stiffness and shear strength of soft clay attenuate under long-term cyclic loading, resulting in reduced foundation bearing capacity of road. The variation regularity of undrained shear strength of saturated soft clay which is normally consolidated or over consolidated under cyclic loading was studied with two-way vibration triaxial test, and some useful results are obtained.

As a foundation for deep-water floating offshore structures, the embedded plate anchor should withstand the complicated marine conditions involving the cyclic loads. The pull-out behaviors of the embedded plate anchor under cyclic loading must be considered whilst designing. This paper presents a numerical approach for assessing the cyclic pull-out behaviors of the embedded plate anchor based on a recently proposed anisotropic bounding surface plasticity model, which can capture the non-failure stable and degradation characteristics of saturated soft clay under cyclic loading with different stress-levels. The pull-out behaviors of the embedded plate anchor under both monotonic and cyclic loading are simulated and investigated. Effects of the mean value, the amplitude of the cyclic loading on the cyclic pull-out behaviors are analyzed. The results demonstrate that under different cyclic loading levels three typical types of the cyclic pull-out behaviors are obtained, i.e., the cyclic stable, the cyclic hypo-stable and the cyclic degradation.

Dynamic consolidation method has been widely used in improving soft land, but always inefficient to saturated soft clay land, which is hard to improve, and even leads to rubber soil. Dynamic and drain consolidation method will deal with it well, with drainage system, pore-water can be expelled instantly from saturated soft clay as impacting. The pore-water pressure and earth pressure test in construction, the standard penetration test, plate loading test, geotechnical test after construction, which are all effective methods for effect testing. There is a comprehensive detection through different depth of soil layer with different detecting means on construction site. The results show that improving saturated soft clay land with dynamic and drain consolidation method has obtained good effect, and the fruit can be guidance for such construction in the future.
