Steel building construction is an important aspect of architecture system in the world. With the rapid development of the steel industry, contemporary steel housing in many developed countries presented dominant position in the market. In this paper, the advantages of steel structure in sustainability, strength, appearance and other aspects are summarized. Also, the application in residential buildings are analyzed, especially in green buildings. Furthermore, a study on the construction of steel building of I-Magic Cube in Shandong Jianzhu University, China are investigated and discussed. And in the example of Shandong Jianzhu Universitys "I-magic Cube", the construction of steel buildings and steel housing and other aspects are analyzed and discussed.

Abstract Based on the finite element method, the typical layout and parameters were selected to establish the overall structure model of steel frame—cold-formed thin-walled steel composite wall and their influence on the mechanical properties and the economic steel amount was analyzed. The results show that the screw spacing, purlin section and purlin spacing have little effect on the lateral stiffness and the amount of steel used in the overall structure, while the width of wall opening has obvious effect. It is suggested that the screw spacing should be consistent with the relevant provisions in the cold-formed thin-walled steel structure specification, the purlin section should be selected relatively small according to the wall thickness and the purlin spacing should be properly amplified. The applicable height of this structure system is higher than that of pure cold-formed thin-wall steel structure system in ordinary residential buildings. The amount of steel used in this structure system is obviously less than that of pure steel frame structure system.

The composite steel structure combines the advantages of steel structures and concrete structures. In order to study the energy-saving behavior of the composite steel structure, a thermal testing on a typical composite steel structure residential in cold region is performed. The energy consumption performances of all components of the residential are evaluated; the heat transfer coefficient K for envelope structure is obtained using the testing data and then the K value is compared with the current specification. The results show that energy-saving standard of the testing residential could not meet the requirements of code. Finally the existing problems and solutions for the composite steel residential buildings are produced.

There are a long winter and a short outdoor construction period in Xinjiang, being an earthquake-prone area. Therefore, it is particularly suitable for the development of steel structure residential buildings. This article explains the current problems in the design of steel structure residential buildings in Xinjiang region. For example, the backward concept of design, the random design of kitchen and bathroom, which leads to too many specifications, being not conducive to industrial production and large amount of steel using , etc. The optimal design ideas were put forward, which included architectural specialty to be dominant, standardized and conventionalized design, serialized, modular and flexible layout. Finally, an example of optimal design was given.

The study focuses on the empirical study of psychological features and mechanisms of perception of architectural space, the mapping of the processes of perception and semantic assessment of real architectural constructions, their photographs and their representations in Google panoramas software application using the techniques of personality semantic differential, architectural semantic differential, and value spectrum. We identified five significant factors of the perception and understanding of the architectural space through Google panoramas software application: “passivity—activity,” “integrity—fragmentation”, “open- ness—closeness”, “expressiveness”, “coziness, comfort”. Architectural objects with outstanding individual design features have more important semantic and value characteristics than mass residential buildings. Using the Google panoramas software application allows to get a more complete set of semantic and value characteristics as compared to photographs of architectural objects. These characteristics are similar to the estimates of architectural objects in a direct contact with them. Therefore, the results obtained open the possibility of using Google panoramas software application as a research tool.
