Abstract The ancient formation is very thick, strong abrasion and poor drillability. Formation pressure of some area is abnormal high-pressure, induced high mud density, and borehole instability problems in some formation restrict the positive displacement motor (PDM) application, and impact drilling tools are instable. All above factors restraint the rate of penetration. Based on the result of litho-mechanical experiments, the impacting experiments are performed on samples of the Jurassic formation, impact fractured efficiency are evaluated, the results show high impact resistance in the formation, the best impact speed is over 12m/s, and the result was important design basis for impact tools improvement to increase the rate of penetrate (ROP) in the deep poor drillability formation.

Mantis shrimp possess both formidable weapons and impact-resistant armour that clash during ritualized combat. The telson is one of few biological structures known to withstand the repeated high impact forces of smashing mantis shrimp strikes, and it is hypothesized that this pairing of armour and weapon is associated with the evolution of telson sparring. We carried out a comparative analysis of telson impact mechanics across 15 mantis shrimp species to assess if the telsons of sparring species (i) are consistently specialized for impact-resistance, (ii) are more impact-resistant than those of non-sparring species, and (iii) have impact parameters that correlate with body size, and thereby useful for assessment. Our data from ball drop tests show that the telsons of all species function like a stiff spring that dissipates most of the impact energy, but none of the measured impact parameters are correlated with the occurrence of sparring behaviour. Impact parameters were correlated with body mass for only some species, suggesting that it is not broadly useful for size assessment during ritualized fighting. Contrary to expectation, sparring mantis shrimp do not appear to have coevolved telson armour that is more robust to impact than non-sparring species. Rather, telson structure is inherently impact-resistant.

The WE43 is a Mg-Y-Nd alloy that presents good mechanical properties and an high creep resistance. For these reasons currently is widely used in the aerospace and automotive industries. The setting of the right thermal heat treatment parameters plays a crucial role in determine the microstructure and consequently the mechanical properties of the alloy. With this in mind, the main goal of this work has been that to identify the optimal parameters to achieve a high impact resistance and at the same time, the most suitable choice, to reach also an important cost-saving solution, which is extremely important especially from the industrial point of view.
