Abstract This research is based on the multi-year data on the distribution of organochlorine pesticides of the DDT group in the water of the coastal Black Sea areas of Crimea, obtained in expeditions of the “Professor Vodyanitsky” research vessel from 1999 to 2020. Study of content of DDT and its metabolites (DDTs) in the blubber of three species of Black Sea cetaceans that were astrand on the Black Sea coast from the 1980s to the 2020s was grounded on own and literature data. While there was an overall significant variability in ∑DDT content during the study period, there was a significant downward trend in their concentrations in the water of coastal areas of Crimea. Despite the significantly decreased DDTs pollution of the habitat of the Black Sea marine mammals over the last 10 years, high concentrations of DDTs were accumulated in their blubber, the maximum value of the sum of DDTs concentrations reached (163 µg/g of lipids) in the blubber of adult depleted bottlenose dolphin. The minimum concentrations were determined in the blubber of a newborn harbour porpoise female. In blubber samples up to 70% was of DDE, DDD - from 21 to 24%, and the concentration of the initial DDT varied from 6 to 14%. Based on the analysis of own and literature data, it is assumed that in the modern period, as compared to the 1990s, there is a downward trend in the content of the DDTs in the blubber of Black Sea cetaceans.

Long-term changes in the amount of precipitation on the Black Sea coast of the Caucasus according to data of the hydro-meteorological stations Anapa, Tuapse and Sochi are considered. The observation data analysis of for the selected periods revealed an increase in the average yearly precipitation from the beginning of the twentieth to the beginning of the twenty-first centuries for all hydro-meteorological stations with a slight decrease in the coefficient of variation. Seasonal changes in precipitation regime are pronounced in the region. The highest increase in seasonal precipitation was noted at the Anapa hydro-meteorological station for winter, then for spring and autumn. At the Tuapse and Sochi hydro-meteorological stations also tended to increase precipitation in spring and autumn, but was noted a slight decrease in winter in the modern period. At the same time, for all seasons such growth is provided mainly by an increase in the minimum seasonal values (for all stations), as well as maximum ones in spring (for all stations) and autumn (hydro-meteorological station Anapa). In modern period relative to the twentieth century it is possible to note a slight decrease in the coefficient of variation in winter and spring (for all hydro-meteorological stations), and an increase in summer (for hydro-meteorological stations Anapa and Tuapse). The redistribution of precipitation by seasons was revealed from the beginning of the twentieth to the beginning of the twentyfirst centuries. The most significant changes affected the hydro-meteorological station Tuapse: the share of autumn and spring precipitation increased from 25 to 31 % and from 18 to 22 %, respectively, while the share of summer precipitation decreased from 26 to 18 %. The share of winter precipitation increased from the first to the third selected periods (from 30 to 35 %), after which it decreased to 29 % in the modern period.

Typical coastal elements of limans and lagoons are barriers, that separate limanic aquatories from a Seas. On limanic shores structure of the Black Sea sand barriers represented three longitudinal landscape “zones”: sea beach (“frontal”), dune-aeolian and limanic (“back of the barrier”). They closely interactive between themselves under influence of lithodynamical exchanges of sediment. General tendency of the barriers dynamics is displacement to Land direction.

A new species of the genus Cimmerites Jeannel, 1928, C. maximovitchi sp. nov., is described from the Akhunskaya Cave and Labirintovaya Cave, both located in the Akhun Karst Massif on the Black Sea Coast of the West Caucasus (Krasnodar Territory, Russia). The new species is rather isolated within the genus Cimmerites and occupies an intermediate position between species related to C. kryzhanovskii Belousov, 1998 and species close to C. vagabundus Belousov, 1998. Though both C. maximovitchi sp. nov. and C. kryzhanovskii are still known only from caves, these species are quite similar in their life form to other members of the genus which are all true endogean species.

The Black Sea, surrounded by six riparian countries, is under the threat of severe pollution, giving rise to the need of taking precautions to protect it from further deterioration. In this paper, an effort putting forth a wastewater treatment and management strategy is outlined for the Black Sea coast of Turkey, including both the technical and financial aspects. The present situation of the coast in terms of land-based pollution and infrastructure is stated, followed by an applicable management strategy. The strategy developed for the coastal settlements involves various stagewise treatment schemes based on population distribution and densities along the coastline, and on the availability of land in a specified period of thirty years. Similar strategies are proposed for the control of pollution originating from industries, for those carried by rivers joining the sea, and for leachate of solid waste landfills. The cost estimations of various treatment schemes are also given in terms of population equivalents.
