The analysis of the bearing characteristics and deformation mechanism of composite foundation reinforced with geogrid-encased stone columns is presented in order to obtain its settlement calculation method. The settlement of composite foundation is divided into three sections which are the reinforced section, unreinforced section, and underlying stratum. Based on Hooke’s law of space problem and the thoughts of the layer-wise summation method, the relative slip displacement between pile and soil of reinforced section without plastic zone is analyzed. The settlement of reinforced section is calculated by the layered iteration method based on the pile element model. The compatibility of vertical and radial deformations of unreinforced section is analyzed based on the pile-soil element model. The settlement of underlying stratum is still calculated by the layer-wise summation method. Finally, two engineering examples are analyzed and the results show that the settlement calculated by the presented method is close to the measured one. The method overcomes the defect that the calculated results by the other existing methods are more dangerous and it is more feasible and can be applied in engineering practice.

Although DJM-Pile have a good effect on strengthening soft foundation,theories about additional stress are too complex or too simply to be used in project well.By adopting FEM software with considering of friction between soil and pile,simulate the additional stress in composite foundation because of DJM pile construction and compare with results gotten in Bossinesq method.The comparison shows that the distribution of additional stress is very similar.So considering several major influential factors,the paper updates the Bossinesq method and brings forward a simplified calculation method.

A case of the long-short-pile composite foundation in liquefied soft soil under a 30-storey high-rise building is presented, in which the long and short piles are made of cement-flyash-gravel (CFG) and lime. A new design calculation method of bearing capacity and settlement of composite foundation is introduced, and the calculated value is compared with the actual measurement. The results show that the liquefaction of soft ground is eliminated and the demand of load and settlement for upper building is met. At the same time, it is proved that the design method is feasible.

In the collapsible loess of Midwest China, quicklime compaction pile composite foundation has been widely used in practical engineering. Firstly,the calculation method of quicklime compaction pile composite foundation is analyzed; then the influencing factors of bearing capacity for quicklime compaction pile composite foundation was researched on the basis of the character about soil compaction effect between piles with the quicklime expanding when absorbing water from the soil; lastly, the calculation method was used in practical engineering, the results can be used to reference in reliability design application of composite foundation.

Settlement calculation of composite foundation is a hot field in geotechnical engineering research . In the paper with an engineering example, useing the equivalent natural settlement calculation methods and weighted modulus settlement calculation methods to calculate the settlement of composite foundations combined by CFG pile and concrete ramming enlarge pile, which compared with the practical measurement result . The results show that the errors of calculated value of the equivalent natural settlement calculation method were permitted and suitable for calculating composite foundation settlement.

This paper uses Indraratna seepage theory, Han pile-soil seepage theory and composite foundation theory to establish three plane strain models. Through finite element calculations, the changes in pore pressure and settlement are compared, and the following laws are found: (1) The model established by the composite foundation theory cannot reflect the objective laws of seepage and deformation; (2) In the case of multiple piles, there is no difference in settlement between Han pile-soil seepage theory considering the bearing characteristics of gravel piles and Indraratna seepage theory without considering the bearing characteristics of gravel piles. (3) The settlement value obtained by the principle of composite foundation is much smaller than the settlement value obtained by the separate calculation of pile and soil.

Foundation treatment is necessary when the construction is built on soft ground; Reinforcing is superior to many other methods when embankment is built on soft ground. This paper adopts slide block balance analysis of the composite foundation bearing capacity consisting of the horizontal reinforced and discrete material pile, while considering the level friction resistance from the reinforcement and ground on the foundation bearing capacity influence. and it is applied to practical engineering. The results show that the method is feasible.

Based on the theory and practice of existing composite foundation, this paper discussed the design idea and introduced the bearing capacity and deformation calculation method of the long-short-pile composite foundation. And it verified the feasibility of this method by engineering example. The results show that: the CM long-short-pile composite foundation which can effectively improve the bearing capacity, reduce the building settlement and differential settlement, and fully exert the potential of soil between piles, has theoretical research and engineering application value.
