The Culex Mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) of French Guiana: A Comprehensive Review With the Description of Three New Species

Abstract The taxonomically intricate genus Culex Linnaeus includes numerous known vector species of parasites and viruses to humans. The aim of this article is to comprehensively review the Culex species which occur in French Guiana to provide a stronger taxonomic foundation for future studies on this genus in South America. The occurrence of Culex species was investigated in light of current taxonomic knowledge through an extensive examination of voucher specimens deposited in the entomological collections of four French depositories and additional specimens recently collected at various localities in French Guiana. Based on this review, 104 Culex species classified in eight subgenera are confirmed to occur in French Guiana. Compared to the most recent checklist, 18 species are added, and 10 species excluded, resulting in a total number of 242 valid mosquito species known to occur in French Guiana. Three nominal species are synonymized, three others are newly described, and a last one is transferred to another informal infrasubgeneric group. Overall, this review also highlights the limits of the use of only bibliographic data when dealing with taxonomically complex groups of insects.

Three new species of Otostigmus Porat, 1876 from Brazilian Atlantic Forest are described. Otostigmus beckeri sp. n. andO. lanceolatus sp. n. are described from the state of Bahia and O. giupponii sp. n. from the state of Espírito Santo. InBrazil, the otostigmine scolopendrid genus Otostigmus comprises 22 species. A summary of Brazilian Otostigmus speciesis presented with new distribution records, taxonomic remarks when appropriate and an identification key. Otostigmus sul-catus Meinert, 1886 is recorded for the first time from Brazil; the Andean Otostigmus silvestrii Kraepelin 1903, previouslyrecorded from Brazil, is here considered not to be present in this country. Eight nominal species are regarded here as newsynonyms. Five of them—Otostigmus pradoi Bücherl, 1939, O. longistigma Bücherl, 1939, O. longipes Bücherl, 1939,O. langei Bücherl, 1946 and O. dentifusus Bücherl, 1946—are based on females of O. tibialis Brölemann, 1902. O. latipesBücherl, 1954 is conspecific with and is considered a junior synonym of O. sulcatus Meinert, 1886; O. limbatus diminutusBücherl, 1946 is a junior synonym of O. limbatus Meinert, 1886 and O. fossulatus Attems, 1928 is a junior synonym of O. goeldii Brölemann, 1898. A lectotype is designated for O. goeldii.

The Neotropical water scavenger beetle genus Chasmogenus Sharp, 1882 is a diverse lineage with 34 described species. Here, three new species from the southwestern margin of the Guiana Shield are described using an integrative approach combining adult morphology and molecular data: Chasmogenus clinatus sp. n. (Brazil: Amazonas, Venezuela: Amazonas), C. gironae sp. n. (Venezuela: Amazonas), and C. inpa sp. n. (Brazil: Amazonas). Examination of the male genitalia is essential for confident identifications and thus unassociated females may prove extremely difficult to identify. New distributional records in Brazil for C. acuminatus Smith & Short, 2020 are provided as well as habitus images of newly described species and an updated key to the species from Venezuela, Suriname, Guyana, French Guiana and northern Brazil.

The genus Robinsonia Grote, 1866 is partially reviewed following a large DNA barcode campaign. In the Robinsonia praphoea Dognin, 1906 group three new species are described: R. simulans sp. n. from French Guiana, up to now confused with R. praphoea itself and then R. decaensi sp. n. and R. maranhensis sp. n. both from the lower Amazon. R. drechseli sp. n. is described from Paraguay and R. inexpectata sp. n., a species close to R. mera (Schaus, 1910) from Costa Rica, is described as new from Peru and Bolivia. Finally the full species status is confirmed for R. flavicorpus Dognin, 1910 which is found to be differentiable from R. marginata Rothschild, 1909. All types are figured along with the male genitalia for most and some female genitalia for all studied species.

We propose a revision of the spider genus Corythalia C.L. Koch, 1850 (Salticidae: Euophryini) with a revised genus diagnosis based on examination of all species available to us. In this paper we redescribe all previously described species from South America with revised species diagnoses and describe 20 new species from South America (and the nearby islands). For C. latipes, the type species of the genus Corythalia, a neotype is designated. In total, 52 nominal species of the genus are herein treated, 46 species are recognized as valid. The females of C. waleckii Taczanowski, 1871, C. luctuosa Caporiacco, 1954 and C. latipes (C.L. Koch, 1846) are described for the first time. Corythalia sellata Simon, 1901, erroneously considered as nomen nudum in the present version of the World Spider Catalog, is here recognised as a valid species. Corythalia fulgipedia Crane, 1948 is also considered a valid species and is removed from the synonymy of C. tropica (Mello-Leitão, 1939). One name is considered a nomen dubium (Corythalia variegata Caporiacco, 1954), two are nomina nuda (C. major Simon, 1901; C. dimidiata Simon, 1901). Two species are transferred to other genera: C. argyrochrysos (Mello-Leitão, 1946) to Pachomius Peckham & Peckham, 1896 as Pachomius argyrochrysos (Mello-Leitão, 1946), comb. nov. and C. heliophanina (Taczanowski, 1871) to Neonella Gertsch, 1936, as Neonella heliophanina (Taczanowski, 1871), comb. nov. under incertae sedis. One species is synonymised: C. barbipes (Mello-Leitão, 1939) is a junior synonym of C. cincta (Badcock, 1932), syn. nov. The new Corythalia species are: C. conferta sp. nov. (♂♀, Brazil), C. concinna sp. nov. (♀, Brazil), C. drepane sp. nov. (♂♀, Brazil), C. drepanopsis sp. nov. (♀, Brazil), C. antepagmenti sp. nov. (♂♀, Brazil), C. ricti Bayer, sp. nov. (♂, Guyana), C. protensa sp. nov. (♂, Brazil), C. gasnieri sp. nov. (♂, Brazil), C. verhaaghi sp. nov. (♀, Brazil), C. scutellaris Bayer, sp. nov. (♂♀, Ecuador), C. dakryodes Bayer, sp. nov. (♀, Colombia), C. foelixi Bayer, sp. nov. (♂♀, French Guiana), C. longiducta sp. nov. (♀, Brazil), C. latior sp. nov. (♂, Bolivia), C. trochophora Bayer, sp. nov. (♂, Ecuador), C. lineata Bayer, sp. nov. (♂, Guyana), C. hamulifera Bayer, sp. nov. (♂, Ecuador), C. tribulosa sp. nov. (♂, Colombia), C. flagrans sp. nov. (♂, Brazil) and C. fragilis sp. nov. The Syrphidae genus Domodon Reemer, 2013 so far included two species, D. zodiacus Reemer, 2013 and D. peperpotensis Reemer, 2014, both recorded only from Suriname. Additional specimens belonging to this genus have been collected in many other localities in South and Central America. In this paper, the genus is revised and three new species are described: D. caxiuana sp. nov. (northern South America), D. inaculeatus sp. nov. (northern South America), and D. sensibilis sp. nov. (Costa Rica). The distribution of D. peperpotensis is extended to include French Guiana. Photographs of the type material of the new species and illustrations of male genitalia of all species are provided, as well as a key to species.

The genus Leptodoras Boulenger is a monophyletic assemblage of at least ten species distributed in large, predominantly lowland rivers throughout the northern half of cis-Andean South America. Leptodoras is diagnosed in Doradidae (thorny catfishes) by unique morphologies of the oral hood (upper labial extensions distinct with comparatively smooth ventral surface, lateral margins of extensions entire, weakly scalloped or fimbriate and without marginal papillae, and interlabial membranes of narrow or moderate width), first gill arch (enlarged accessory lamellae extend well onto medial face of gill filaments), and gas bladder (reduced size and modified cordiform shape, two distinct horn-like diverticula project from posterior walls of posterior chambers, and a pair of bulbous diverticula project from lateral walls of anterior chamber). Examination of specimens of Leptodoras from throughout its range verified the distinctiveness of the seven nominal species (L. acipenserinus, L. copei, L. hasemani, L. juruensis, L. linnelli, L. myersi and L. praelongus) and revealed three new species described herein (Leptodoras nelsoni, L. rogersae, and L. cataniai). A lectotype for L. hasemani is designated.

Species of the nominotypical subgenus of Anaphes Haliday, 1833 (Hymenoptera: Mymaridae) in Russia are reviewed. A key to females of the 18 Palaearctic species of the subgenus is given. Ten species are newly recorded from Russia (two of them based on tentative identifications), and new records of the extralimital specimens examined are also provided. Three new species are described from the eastern Palaearctic region: Anaphes (Anaphes) csabai sp. n. (Kuril Islands), Anaphes (Anaphes) maxim sp. n. (Primorskii krai and Sakhalin Island), and Anaphes (Anaphes) rfe sp. n. (Primorskii krai and Beijing, China). Several historical records of some species of Anaphes in Russia are critically analyzed in the unfortunal absence of most voucher specimens, having in mind that some of them were likely misiden¬tified.

Cephennomicrus Reitter of the Philippines is exceptionally poorly known, with only four nominal species recorded so far, two on Luzon, one on Palawan, and one on Leyte. Three more new species are described: C. palawanicus sp. n. (Palawan), C. impressus sp. n. (Palawan), and C. lagunensis sp. n. (Luzon). The latter species is unusual among all congeners in having a monstrously elongate aedeagus, longer than the abdomen.

The results of a systematic survey of monogeneans collected from the gills of the African carp, Labeo coubie (Cyprinidae) from the Gambia River basins in the Niokolo-Koba National Park, Senegal, are presented. The following 11 previously described species belonging to Dactylogyrus and Dogielius (Dactylogyridae) are reported: Dactylogyrus retroversus Guégan, Lambert & Euzet, 1988, Dactylogyrus titus Guégan, Lambert & Euzet, 1988, Dactylogyrus falcilocus Guégan, Lambert & Euzet, 1988, Dactylogyrus decaspirus Guégan, Lambert & Euzet, 1988, Dactylogyrus oligospirophallus Paperna, 1973, Dactylogyrus jaculus Guégan, Lambert & Euzet, 1988, Dogielius anthocolpos Guégan, Lambert & Euzet, 1989, Dogielius clavipenis Guégan, Lambert & Euzet, 1989, Dogielius harpagatus Guégan, Lambert & Euzet, 1989, Dogielius complicitus Guégan, Lambert & Euzet, 1989, and Dogielius flagellatus Guégan, Lambert & Euzet, 1989. Three new species of Dactylogyrus with 2 haptoral bars are described as follows: Dactylogyrus yassensis n. sp., Dactylogyrus dembae n. sp., and Dactylogyrus leonis n. sp. The sclerotized structures of type and voucher specimens of Dactylogyrus cyclocirrus Paperna, 1973, Dactylogyrus omega Guégan & Lambert, 1991, and Dactylogyrus cf labeous Paperna, 1979 are illustrated for comparative purposes. The type specimens indicate that D. cyclocirrus is based on specimens of two different species, among which the lectotype is designated from the syntypes collected from Labeo cylindricus. Dactylogyrus cyclocirrus of Guégan et al. (1988) and D. cf labeous Paperna, 1979 are considered senior subjective synonyms of D. yassensis n. sp. and D. dembae n. sp., respectively.
