In the current Matters Arising we present results from verifying control measurements of dissolved mercury (Hg) in glacial meltwater from the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS), which significantly challenges the conclusions of the recent publication by Hawkings et al. (2021). By direct measurements of meltwater in the same glacial catchment area, we demonstrate that the input Hg concentration for the regional upscaling in Hawkings et al (2021) is likely vastly over-estimated with major implications for the validity of the asserted extreme yield of Hg from the GrIS. In addition, we present a plausible explanation for the high Hg concentration values in the study, namely hitherto unidentified cross-contamination of water samples by mercury chloride (HgCl2), which was present and used for other purposes during field work. Together, the result of our control study potentially invalidates the suggested implications of geologically sourced Hg under the southwestern margin of the GrIS on the Arctic ecosystem in both current and future climate conditions.

The timing of Laurentide Ice Sheet deglaciation along its southwestern margin controlled the evolution of large glacial lakes and has implications for human migration into the Americas. Accurate reconstruction of the ice sheet’s retreat also constrains glacial isostatic adjustment models and is important for understanding ice-sheet sensitivity to climate forcing. Despite its significance, retreat of the southwestern Laurentide Ice Sheet (SWLIS) is poorly constrained by minimum-limiting 14C data. We present 26 new cosmogenic 10Be exposure ages spanning the western Interior Plains, Canada. Using a Bayesian framework, we combine these data with geomorphic mapping, 10Be, and high-quality minimum-limiting 14C ages to provide an updated chronology. This dataset presents an internally consistent retreat record and indicates that the initial detachment of the SWLIS from its convergence with the Cordilleran Ice Sheet began by ca. 15.0 ka, concurrent with or slightly prior to the onset of the Bølling-Allerød interval (14.7–12.9 ka) and retreated >1200 km to its Younger Dryas (YD) position in ~2500 yr. Ice-sheet stabilization at the Cree Lake Moraine facilitated a meltwater drainage route to the Arctic from glacial Lake Agassiz within the YD, but not necessarily at the beginning. Our record of deglaciation and new YD constraints demonstrate deglaciation of the Interior Plains was ~60% faster than suggested by minimum 14C constraints alone. Numerical modeling of this rapid retreat estimates a loss of ~3.7 m of sea-level equivalent from the SWLIS during the Bølling-Allerød interval.

Greening on the edge of desert is an effective way to prevent and control desertification. This paper studies the humidity characteristics of sand samples collected from the surface and interior of dunes in the southwestern edge of the Taklimakan Desert, whose geographic coordinates are 39°43’37” – 39°43’41” N, 78°43’02” – 78°43’09” E. The humidity of sand samples at vertical depths under five different surface positions of windward slope bottom, windward slope middle, windward slope top, leeward slope middle and leeward slope bottom was studied. On the surface of the sand at different locations and at the same depth under the surface, the sand humidity is greater closer to the bottom of the slope, for both windward slope and leeward slope. The humidity gradient values on the surface and at different depths on different positions of the dunes are obtained. Finally, recommendations are provided for effective ways to prevent desertification in the desert edge of Kashgar.

The Neotropical water scavenger beetle genus Chasmogenus Sharp, 1882 is a diverse lineage with 34 described species. Here, three new species from the southwestern margin of the Guiana Shield are described using an integrative approach combining adult morphology and molecular data: Chasmogenus clinatus sp. n. (Brazil: Amazonas, Venezuela: Amazonas), C. gironae sp. n. (Venezuela: Amazonas), and C. inpa sp. n. (Brazil: Amazonas). Examination of the male genitalia is essential for confident identifications and thus unassociated females may prove extremely difficult to identify. New distributional records in Brazil for C. acuminatus Smith & Short, 2020 are provided as well as habitus images of newly described species and an updated key to the species from Venezuela, Suriname, Guyana, French Guiana and northern Brazil.

This study investigates the interplay of evolving tectonic and submarine sedimentation processes in the northwest Aegean Sea using marine multichannel seismic profiles. We identify an extensive basin developing in the Thermaikos Gulf inner shelf, outer shelf, and slope leading to the 1500 m deep West North Aegean Trough (NAT). We establish the unconformable extent of Eocene and Oligocene sequences on the upper shelf and trace their continuation in the deeper shelf and slope of Thermaikos Gulf. The start of the Miocene and Middle Miocene developed below the well-established Messinian bounding reflectors that are mostly erosional. Important lateral variations are observed within the Messinian sequence, which is up to 0.8 s thick. Messinian prograding clinoforms are identified on the Thermaikos Gulf shelf and southeast of Chalkidiki, and a zone of irregular reflectors is attributed to the Messinian salt layer. The transpressional deformation of the Messinian in the southwestern margin constrains the timing of westward progradation of the North Anatolian Fault during Messinian. The Pliocene-Quaternary sediments are 0.6–1.8 s thick, showing the overwhelming effect of tectonics on sedimentation plus the northwards Quaternary activation at the Thermaikos apron.
