Lagrangian quantization rules for general gauge theories are proposed on a basis of a superfield formulation of the standard BRST symmetry. Independence of the S-matrix on a choice of the gauge is proved. The Ward identities in terms of superfields are derived.

A consistent quantum treatment of general gauge theories with an arbitrary gauge-fixing in the presence of soft breaking of the BRST symmetry in the field–antifield formalism is developed. It is based on a gauged (involving a field-dependent parameter) version of finite BRST transformations. The prescription allows one to restore the gauge-independence of the effective action at its extremals and therefore also that of the conventional S-matrix for a theory with BRST-breaking terms being additively introduced into a BRST-invariant action in order to achieve a consistency of the functional integral. We demonstrate the applicability of this prescription within the approach of functional renormalization group to the Yang–Mills and gravity theories. The Gribov–Zwanziger action and the refined Gribov–Zwanziger action for a many-parameter family of gauges, including the Coulomb, axial and covariant gauges, are derived perturbatively on the basis of finite gauged BRST transformations starting from Landau gauge. It is proved that gauge theories with soft breaking of BRST symmetry can be made consistent if the transformed BRST-breaking terms satisfy the same soft BRST symmetry breaking condition in the resulting gauge as the untransformed ones in the initial gauge, and also without this requirement.

We derive the off-shell nilpotent and absolutely anticommuting Becchi–Rouet–Stora–Tyutin (BRST) and anti-BRST symmetry transformations, corresponding to the (1-form) Yang–Mills (YM) and (2-form) tensorial gauge symmetries of the four (3+1)-dimensional (4D) Freedman–Townsend (FT) model, by exploiting the augmented version of Bonora–Tonin's (BT) superfield approach to BRST formalism where the 4D flat Minkowskian theory is generalized onto the (4, 2)-dimensional supermanifold. One of the novel observations is the fact that we are theoretically compelled to go beyond the horizontality condition (HC) to invoke an additional set of gauge-invariant restrictions (GIRs) for the derivation of the full set of proper (anti-)BRST symmetries. To obtain the (anti-)BRST symmetry transformations, corresponding to the tensorial (2-form) gauge symmetries within the framework of augmented version of BT-superfield approach, we are logically forced to modify the FT-model to incorporate an auxiliary 1-form field and the kinetic term for the antisymmetric (2-form) gauge field. This is also a new observation in our present investigation. We point out some of the key differences between the modified FT-model and Lahiri-model (LM) of the dynamical non-Abelian 2-form gauge theories. We also briefly mention a few similarities.

This chapter, which is the last chapter in Part I, is devoted to an extensive discussion of quantum gauge theories, which is based on functional integrals and Lagrangian quantization. After introducing the notion of a Yang-Mills gauge theory, the Faddeev-Popov method (also known as the DeWitt-Faddeev-Popov procedure) is explained. Starting from this point, the BRST symmetry is formulated, and the corresponding Ward identities (called Slavnov-Taylor identities in some cases) established. More specialized subjects, such as the gauge dependence of effective action and the background field method, are dealt with in detail. In addition, Yang-Mills theory is analyzed as a primary example of general theorems concerning the renormalization of gauge theories.

The implications of supersymmetry and chiral Ward identities in supersymmetric gauge theories are explored using current algebra methods, and a critical assessment is made of the relative merits of the current algebra and effective Lagrangian approaches. Using the Ward identities directly, simple derivations are given of several important properties of the condensates in supersymmetric QCD, and of the generalized Dashen formulae. The corrections to these results in the presence of explicit, soft supersymmetry breaking are calculated. A concise formula is presented for the mass splittings within pseudo Goldstone multiplets induced by soft supersymmetry breaking terms. It is shown that if this supersymmetry breaking is the θ=0 component of a chiral superfield, the supertrace of the pseudo Goldstone masses vanishes. Using current algebra reduction formulae, the pseudo Goldstone masses are calculated in supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, and supersymmetric QCD for NF<NC and NF=NC. Some differences are found between the current algebra and effective Lagrangian predictions, and their possible origins are discussed.

We derive the off-shell nilpotent and absolutely anti-commuting Becchi–Rouet–Stora–Tyutin (BRST) as well as anti-BRST symmetry transformations corresponding to the non-Yang–Mills (NYM) symmetry transformations of (2+1)-dimensional Jackiw–Pi (JP) model within the framework of "augmented" superfield formalism. The Curci–Ferrari (CF) restriction, which is a hallmark of non-Abelian one-form gauge theories, does not appear in this case. One of the novel features of our present investigation is the derivation of proper (anti-)BRST symmetry transformations corresponding to the auxiliary field ρ that cannot be derived by any conventional means.

The gauge dependence of the effective action of composite fields is investigated. The Ward identities for general gauge theories with arbitrary composite fields are found. It is proved that the extremum of the action of composite fields does not depend on the gauge condition. An example of the calculation of the effective action of composite fields in Yang-Mills theory is discussed.

Abstract We construct a large class of gauge theories with extended supersymmetry on four-dimensional manifolds with a Killing vector field and isolated fixed points. We extend previous results limited to super Yang-Mills theory to general $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 2 gauge theories including hypermultiplets. We present a general framework encompassing equivariant Donaldson-Witten theory and Pestun’s theory on S4 as two particular cases. This is achieved by expressing fields in cohomological variables, whose features are dictated by supersymmetry and require a generalized notion of self-duality for two-forms and of chirality for spinors. Finally, we implement localization techniques to compute the exact partition function of the cohomological theories we built up and write the explicit result for manifolds with diverse topologies.
