The Life and Death of Mr. Badman (1680)

At the centre of the local world of The Life and Death of Mr. Badman (1680) is an alehouse whose keeper’s son is modelled on the young Bunyan’s intimate friend in Bedford. A focus on the representation of ‘alehouse culture’ in this work leads to a consideration of the social implications of blasphemy, Sabbath-breaking, and domestic violence in Bunyan’s local community. Badman not only breaks the Sabbath himself but prevents his first godly wife from keeping it, leading to conflict in the household, and to domestic violence. The Life and Death of Mr. Badman thus tells the story—through its narrators, Attentive and Wiseman and their digressive, eye-witnessed tales of providence and judgement—of a damnable life in the making: the journey, not of a pilgrim to heaven, but of an unrepentant, blasphemous, and violent sinner to hell.

The result of the study covers all three aspects. First, the causes of the Nyorat ceremony are held after thirty days of dead body to be lied down in the funeral house: (1) The belief factor of the spirit of the deceased person, (2) the fear factor for the unfortunate (3) religious social factor, (4) the economic factor of the Kaharingan Hindu adherents , and (5) the factor of affection towards the ancestral spirit of the late. The last factor is based on the assumptions, namely (1) preparing the Nyorat ceremonial facilities and infrastructure, (2) it is not to lose the meaning that can be inherent in it, (3) to purify/cleanse the spirit of the dead so that the sacred and inner and family will get happiness back. The implications of the Nyorat ceremony are (1) the religious implications relating to the belief of the Hindu Kaharingan adherents from generation to generation, that if they are not implemented, they will lose the meaning of the Nyorat ceremonial purposes, (2) the psychological implications require cooperation, (3) the social implications culture is the act of intervening to support the course of the ceremony, and (4) the economic implications of the community strongly support the course of the ceremony. Based on the results of the analysis, it is obtained three things. The first is the reasons of the Hindu adherents to conduct the Nyorat ceremony, the second is processes of implementation of the Nyorat ceremony, the three religious, psychological, and social implications, and the community’s economy towards the Hindu Kaharingan religious system are acceptable to the local community.

In this article, I explore how the social contract of schooling and the three functions of schooling (Noguera 2003)—to sort, to socialize, and to control— impact and constrain the freedom and agency of a group of young Black and Latinx men in one suburban school district that was experiencing sociodemographic shifts in the Northeastern United States. I use qualitative data to frame how the young men experience schooling, and I show how the local community context facilitates the institutionalization of discriminatory sorting processes and racially prejudiced norms. I also show how the young men are excessively controlled and monitored via zero tolerance disciplinary practices, which effectively constrains their humanity and capacity to freely exist in their school and which inadvertently strengthens the connective tissue between schools and prisons.

This chapter discusses the rise, development, and Romanization of ancient Carthage in the early Christian period after the formation of the province of Africa Proconsularis in the Augustan period; the physical topography of the city of Carthage, including the Byrsa, the Antonine Baths, and the amphitheater; and it describes the tophet or outdoor sacrificial area and whether human sacrifice was practiced among the Carthaginians. It also covers the life, influence, and African roots of Septimius Severus, the Roman emperor during Perpetua’s life and death. Also discussed are the social, religious, and intellectual conditions for pagans in Roman Carthage, who their local gods were (Tanit, Saturn, Juno Caelestis, Baal Hammon), and the connections between civic and religious life.

This chapter explores the funerary rites in the Phoenician-Punic world from a comprehensive point of view, and it focuses on the common points arising from a large amount of data. The concern for burying their deceased and the belief in the soul’s afterlife show that the Phoenicians considered death as a transformation rather than as the end of a person’s life. Through our access to archaeological remains and written sources, we can reconstruct the existence of a meaningful burial program that was destined to provide a “good death” and afterlife. Funerary rituals, thus, are the actions or gestures to achieve this goal. The aim of this chapter is to explain the rites that family members undertook once someone died, in order to transform correctly the deceased person into an otherworldly being, the ancestor. The social implications of the data arising from burials are also briefly considered.

Abstract In this article we consider the discursive production of status as it relates to democratic ideals of environmental equity and community responsibility, orienting specifically to food discourse and ‘elite authenticity’ (Mapes 2018), as well as to recent work concerning normativity and class inequality (e.g. Thurlow 2016; Hall, Levon, & Milani 2019). Utilizing a dataset comprised of 150 Instagram posts, drawn from three different acclaimed chefs’ personal accounts, we examine the ways in which these celebrities emphasize local/sustainable food practices while simultaneously asserting their claims to privileged eating. Using multimodal critical discourse analysis, we document three general discursive tactics: (i) plant-based emphasis, (ii) local/community terroir, and (iii) realities of meat consumption. Ultimately, we establish how the chefs’ claims to egalitarian/environmental ideals paradoxically diminish their eliteness, while simultaneously elevating their social prestige, pointing to the often complicated and covert ways in which class inequality permeates the social landscape of contemporary eating. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to reflect on what can be learned about disaster risk reduction (DRR) from the L’Aquila trial of scientists. The court case was initiated because of a controversial meeting on 31 March 2009 of the Major Risks Committee (MRC), held under the auspices of the Italian Department of Civil Protection. The purpose of the meeting was to consider (prior to the fatal earthquake of 6 April 2009) disaster risk in the L’Aquila area, which was being affected by an earthquake swarm since October 2008. Design/methodology/approach The authors undertook a document analysis of trial materials, and a review of academic and media commentary about the trial. Findings The legal process revealed that disaster governance was inadequate and not informed by the DRR paradigm or international guidelines. Risk assessment was carried out only in a techno-scientific manner, with little acknowledgement of the social issues influencing risks at the local community level. There was no inclusion of local knowledge or engagement of local people in transformative DRR strategies. Originality/value Most previous commentary is inadequate in terms of not considering the institutional, scientific and social responsibilities for DRR as exposed by the trial. This paper is unique in that it considers the contents of the MRC meeting as well as all trial documents. It provides a comprehensive reflection on the implications of this case for DRR and the resilience of peoples and places at risk. It highlights that a switch from civil protection to community empowerment is needed to achieve sustainable outcomes at the local level.
