In 2004, comedian Dave Chappelle brought residents of Yellow Springs, Ohio, and New York City together in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, for a hip-hop block party featuring a roster of socially engaged rap and neo-soul artists. This chapter argues that the 2006 film of the concert,Dave Chappelle’s Block Party, directed by Michel Gondry, endeavors to construct a utopian community centered on the birthplace of hip-hop. Employing dance studies methodologies to examine a non-dance event, this article attends to the choreography of the block, the party attendees and performers, and their spontaneous solo and group gestures and movements at the block party. Such an approach emphasizes the corporeality of the concert performers and attendees and allows an examination of their bodily signification in terms of race, gender, ideology, power, and ultimately the nation.

This article excavates the ethos surrounding hip hop, starting from the proposition that hip hop represents a distinct yet pervasive expression of contemporary black subjectivity, which crystalized in 1970s New York City and has since proliferated into a potent ethos of the subaltern embraced within socially marginalized youth communities throughout the world. The article begins by outlining the black diasporic traditions of expressive performance that hip hop issues from, as discussed through the work of Zora Neale Hurston and Amiri Baraka. In the remainder of the article, a blueprint of hip hop’s ethos is presented based on five fundamental tenets: (1) properties of flow, layering, and rupture; (2) a principle of productive consumption; (3) the production of excessive publicity or promotion—what hip-hop affiliates refer to as “hype”; (4) embracing individual and communal entrepreneurship; and (5) a committed politics of action and loyalty. While acknowledging hip hop’s malleability and refusal to be neatly characterized, the article maintains that its characteristic spirit embodies these core doctrines.

Background and Purpose: To examine whether the baseline stroke knowledge of children in schools participating in our Hip Hop Stroke program has changed since its inception in late 2005. Methods: We gathered baseline stroke knowledge surveys from 2,839 students enrolled in the Hip Hop Stroke program from November 2005 through April 2014 with median annual enrollment of 344 (range 55 to 582). All students were enrolled in New York City public schools, in 4th through 6th grade. Students who left ≥3 questions blank were discarded; other blank answers were treated as missing. Data were analyzed using binomial, Chi-Square and regression analysis (SPSS v22.0). Results: Overall there was no consistent trend in baseline stroke knowledge by academic year. Overall, 28.4% of students recognized stroke occurred in the brain (expected value 25% [p<0.001], range from 13.8-61.2% for any given year). With stroke diagnosis provided, 85.5% of 1436 students knew to call 911, whereas only 59.6% of 1243 students knew to call 911 when given a hypothetical real-world stroke symptom scenario without stroke diagnosis included, p<0.001. For a composite assessment of knowledge including 4 stroke symptoms (blurred vision, facial droop, sudden headache, slurred speech), 1 distractor (chest pain), and urgent action plan (call 911), asked consistently since 2006, overall students scored a mean 2.86 (95% CI: 2.80-2.92; possible range 0-6, expected value 2.75), with annual scores ranging from 2.54-3.56. Conclusion: Stroke knowledge among elementary school students remains low and has not appreciably changed during the last 9 years. The use of hypothetical real-world stroke symptom scenarios may more accurately reflect intent to call 911 for stroke than the use of questions in which stroke diagnosis is given.

During early 2020, the world encountered an extreme event in the form of a new and deadly disease, COVID-19. Over the next two years, the pandemic brought sickness and death to countries and their cities around the globe. One of the first and initially the hardest hit location was New York City, USA. This article is an introduction to the Special Issue in this journal that highlights the impacts from and responses to COVID-19 as an extreme event in the New York City metropolitan region. We overview the aspects of COVID-19 that make it an important global extreme event, provide brief background to the conditions in the world, and the US before describing the 10 articles in the issue that focus on conditions, events and dynamics in New York City during the initial phases of the pandemic.

The New Nordic Kitchen has conquered the world, Agern and the Nordic Food Hall at Grand Central Station in New York City and Noma in Copenhagen serving as notable examples. Normally this development is perceived as something that came out of nowhere, or as the result of the initiatives of specific individuals such as René Redzepi, chef at Noma. In this article, we will argue that it is part of a much broader cultural movement replacing precision, nutrition, and hygiene with pleasure, taste, and creativity as the center of kitchen culture, food education, and child upbringing. We support this argument by focusing on children's cookbooks published in Denmark during the period 1971–2016.

September of 1961 brought welcome relief from the Berlin Crisis in the Oform of two distinctly American recreations: the World Series and the fall book season. As always, both seemed to focus on New York City, and the New York media brought excitement and suspense to fit both seasons: excitement – as Roger Maris attempted to break Babe Ruth's record of sixty home runs – and suspense, as Simon & Schuster ran eye-catching but mysterious ads for a new novel, revealing nothing more than the title – Catch-22. Everyone knew what Maris's quest meant, but no one seemed to know what “CATCH-22” meant.
