The preterm very low birth weight infants are at high risk of motor developmental delays. The developmental screening tools used by health professionals in pediatric practice serves several purposes viz. as a discriminative screening tool to identify the developmental delay in such high risk infants; as an evaluation tool to quantify the levels of functional skills achieved; as a prognostic tool to quantify the changes in levels of functional skills following specific developmental care interventions and as a predictive tool to predict the quantum of existing or impending neuro-developmental disability in high risk infants. Thus developmental screening tools serves as an integral part of early intervention programs. Such screening tools also serve as program evaluation strategy in quantifying the efficacy of early developmental care intervention programs. This review is aimed at describing the properties of developmental screening tools for motor developmental delay in preterm infants.J Nepal Paediatr Soc 2015;35(2):162-167

PurposeThe purpose of this tutorial is to provide an overview of the benefits and challenges associated with the early identification of dyslexia.MethodThe literature on the early identification of dyslexia is reviewed. Theoretical arguments and research evidence are summarized. An overview of response to intervention as a method of early identification is provided, and the benefits and challenges associated with it are discussed. Finally, the role of speech-language pathologists in the early identification process is addressed.ConclusionsEarly identification of dyslexia is crucial to ensure that children are able to maximize their educational potential, and speech-language pathologists are well placed to play a role in this process. However, early identification alone is not sufficient—difficulties with reading may persist or become apparent later in schooling. Therefore, continuing progress monitoring and access to suitable intervention programs are essential.

New federal legislation involving infants at risk for handicaps and their families, in the form of Public Law 99-457, will rely on interaction between pediatricians and other professionals to maximize health and social benefits. Involvement in early identification and remediation of infants at risk is a role well suited to the primary care pediatrician. Early Intervention Programs offer remediation and enhancement of development for children at biologic or environmental risk. Pediatricians should be alert to screen, identify, and assess children who may be helped by Early Intervention Programs. The primary care pediatrician should work with children who have these problems, help coordinate care, and serve as an advocate for the child and family.

This paper describes the development of a prediction model for the early identification of low employability graduates in Malaysia. A total of five proportional hazard models are estimated and using the criteria of percentage correctly and wrongly predicted, a prediction model is selected based on the percentage correctly predicted. The percentile of the predicted hazard rate is used as the employability index (EI). In the context of Malaysia, it is recommended that the 5th percentile graduates be considered as low employability graduates. With this early identification tool, specific intervention programs can be tailored for the right target groups.

Background: Current study was conducted with the objective to identify the type of seizures in infants and to know the underlying etiological factors and to know the presence of co-morbidities.Methods: Hospital based retrospective study of 35 children conducted from January 2018 to January 2020. Files of children who were diagnosed with infantile onset seizures during that period were retrieved and analyzed. Results: Out of the 35 children with seizures, generalized tonic clonic seizures was the commonest type of seizures 20 (57%), followed by simple partial and myoclonic seizures in 20% and 11.4% respectively. Structural causes were the commonest identifiable cause of seizures. Developmental delay was the most common co-morbidity followed by visual impairment. Conclusions: Seizures in children less than 2 years is a potentially preventable entity, likely to be amenable to better perinatal care, early identification and management of seizures. Commonly associated co-morbidity with seizures was developmental delay that requires close followup and early intervention.
