Abstract Introduction Sleep and physical activity are both important to health, but the demands of our modern schedule often require individuals to choose one over the other. In adolescents, the association between objectively measured sleep and physical activity is not well established in the literature. The aim of current study was to assess associations between free-living and physical activity and sleep among 15-year-old adolescents. Methods Free-living physical activity and sleep were assessed with wrist-worn accelerometers, sleep diary, and questionnaires during a 7-day period including school days and non-school days in 270 (161 girls) adolescents (mean age 15.8±0.3y) in Reykjavik, Iceland. Linear regression analysis was used to explore the associations between objectively measured physical activity and sleep. T-test was used to determine if there is a significant difference in objectively measured sleep between those who reported sports or exercising <6 versus ≥6 h/week. Results Weekly mean physical activity (2040±466 counts/min of wear/day) was negatively associated with total sleep time (6.6±0.64 h/night) (β±SE=-3.5±0.7, p<0.001). However, physical activity was also negatively associated with minutes of wake after sleep onset on non-school days (p=0.047) and standard deviation (i.e. night-to-night variability) of total sleep time over the week (p=0.028). Subjects who reported exercising ≥6 h/week (n=116) had lower night-to-night variability in bedtime (41.2±27.9 min) than those who did not (49.8±37.5 min), p=0.033. Conclusion The negative association between physical activity and sleep duration suggests that in more active individuals’ physical activity may be displacing sleep. However, greater physical activity is also associated with fewer minutes of awakening and a less variable sleep schedule, indicating better sleep quality. These findings suggest that physical activity is important for good sleep quality, but students should more closely consider sleep guidelines when designing an exercise schedule. Abstract Objectives To investigate the relationship between objectively-measured, free-living sleep quantity and quality, and cardiometabolic health, in a rural African setting in 139 adults (≥40 years, female: n=99, male: n=40). Wrist-mounted, tri-axial accelerometry data was collected over nine days. Measures of sleep quantity and quality, and physical activity were extracted from valid minute-by-minute data. Self-reported data included behavioural, health and socio-demographic variables. Biological data included body composition, resting blood pressure and fasting blood glucose, insulin and lipids. Regression models were constructed with insulin resistance (IR), Cardiometabolic (CM) risk and a metabolic z-score, as dependent variables, adjusting for socio-demographic, behavioural and biological factors. Results Nocturnal sleep time was longer in females (p=0.054) and sleep quality was better in males (p≤0.017). Few participants slept >9 hours/night (4-5%), and 46-50% slept <7 hours/night. IR and CM risk was higher in females (p≤0.006). In adjusted models, sleep variables were independently associated with IR (p<0.05). Sleep quantity was linearly (p<0.05) and non-linearly (p≤0.0196) associated with IR, and non-linearly (p≤0.0398) associated with CM risk. Sleep quality was linearly related with IR (p<0.05). A number of non-sleep behavioural variables were independently associated with CM risk (alcohol and tobacco use, p≤0.034) and IR (physical activity, sugar-sweetened beverage consumption, p<0.05).

Results Females had more nocturnal sleep than males (7.2 vs. 6.8 hours/night, p=0.0464) while males recorded more diurnal sleep time (p=0.0290). Wake after sleep onset and number of awakenings were higher in females, and sleep efficiency was higher in males (p≤0.0225). Sleep indices were generally similar between weekdays and weekends, except for sleep fragmentation index (p=0.0458). Sleep quantity, but not sleep quality was independently and inversely associated with adiposity (p=0.0453). Physical activity and morbidity measures were significantly and consistently associated with sleep and adiposity measures (p<0.0458). The qualitative data explained some of the unexpected associational directions of the independent variables correlated with sleep variables.

Background:Sleep and mood have seldom been compared between elite athletes and nonelite athletes, although potential differences suggest that physical activity may affect these parameters. This study aims to explore whether adolescent elite athletes differ from controls in terms of sleep, positive affect (PA) and negative affect (NA).Methods:Forty-eight elite athletes and 26 controls participating in organized and nonorganized sport completed a questionnaire, and a 7-day sleep diary.Results:On school days, the athletes and the controls who participated in organized and nonorganized sport differed in bedtime (22:46, 23:14, 23:42, P < .01), sleep onset (23:03, 23:27, 00:12, P < .01), and total sleep time (7:52, 8:00, 6:50, P < 01). During weekend, the athletes, the controls who participated in organized and nonorganized sport differed in bedtime (23:30, 00:04, 00:49, P < .01), sleep onset (23.42, 00:18, 01:13, P < .01), rise time (9:15, 9:47, 10:55, P < .01), sleep efficiency (95.0%, 94.2%, 90.0%, P < 05), and sleep onset latency (11.8, 18.0, 28.0 minutes, P < .01). Furthermore, the athletes reported less social jetlag (0:53) and higher score for PA (34.3) compared with the controls who participated in nonorganized sport (jetlag: 1:25, P < .05, PA: 29.8, P < .05).Conclusions:An almost dose-response association was found between weekly training hours, sleep, social jetlag and mood in adolescents.

Abstract Background Although evidences showed that sleep disorder is common in patient with end stage renal disease (ESRD), less is known about their sleep quality after early post-kidney transplantation (kTx) especially in Intensive Care Unite (ICU). Thus, the purpose of this study is to investigate sleep quality of kTx recipients in ICU and explore factors related poor sleep, second, to measure the correlation of subjective sleep quality and sleep architecture assessed by PSG in kTx recipients. Methods This study recruited participants from ESRD patients registered in transplantation waiting list at the third xiangya hospital of central south university in China. Participants required to complete the Pittsburgh sleep quality index(PSQI) and demographic questionnaire as baseline data and received one night of Polysomnography (PSG) in the ICU within 96 hours of surgery, during which time sound and light data were monitored. After that Richards Campbell sleep questionnaires (RCSQ) also need completed. Results 26 participants self-reported sleep quality and sleep efficiency based on RCSQ was at middle level (49.2 ± 25.6mm), and 14/26(53.8%) kTx recipients in ICU were poor sleepers defined by RCSQ <50. PSG showed that most kTx recipients in ICU had shallow sleep with mainly stage 2 sleep time (80.90 ±70.10 min), lower total sleep time (136.50 ±86.41 min), higher awakening frequency after sleep onset (8.87 ±5.92 times) and long awaken time (94.67 ±75.09 min) when a sleep disruption occured. multiple linear regression analysis showed that self-reported noise and pain were the significant factor affecting sleep(P < 0.05).Conclusion Subjective sleep quality based on RCSQ scored better than objective one measured by PSG in kTx recipients, sleep disruption always remained a substantial problem and affected by self-reported noise and pain.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of auricular acupressure on sleep quality and pruritus in patients undergoing hemodialysis and to propose an effective and evidence-based nursing intervention.Methods: This was a single-blind, nonequivalent, group comparison study with 42 participants. The experimental period was a total of 8 weeks, and five different acupressure sites were applied in each group. Dependent variables were measured before the intervention, at the 4th week of the intervention, and at the 8th week of the intervention.Results: There were significant differences in the Pittsburgh sleep quality index, total sleep time, sleep efficiency, sleep onset latency, light sleep, deep sleep, number of awakenings, serum melatonin levels, subjective pruritus and skin hydration. No significant difference was found in skin pH between the two groups. Conclusion: Auricular acupressure was found to be an effective nursing intervention to improve sleep quality and to reduce pruritus in patients undergoing hemodialysis.

Abstract Study Objectives The objectives of the study were (1) to compare both actigraphy and questionnaire-assessed sleep quality and timing in children with Smith–Magenis syndrome (SMS) to a chronologically age-matched typically developing (TD) group and (2) to explore associations between age, nocturnal and diurnal sleep quality, and daytime behavior. Methods Seven nights of actigraphy data were collected from 20 children with SMS (mean age 8.70; SD 2.70) and 20 TD children. Daily parent/teacher ratings of behavior and sleepiness were obtained. Mixed linear modeling was used to explore associations between total sleep time and daytime naps and behavior. Results Sleep in children with SMS was characterized by shorter total sleep time (TST), extended night waking, shorter sleep onset, more daytime naps, and earlier morning waking compared to the TD group. Considerable inter-daily and inter-individual variability in sleep quality was found in the SMS group, so caution in generalizing results is required. An expected inverse association between age and TST was found in the TD group, but no significant association was found for the SMS group. No between-group differences in sleep hygiene practices were identified. A bidirectional negative association between TST and nap duration was found for the SMS group. In the SMS group, increased afternoon sleepiness was associated with increased irritability (p = .007) and overactivity (p = .005). Conclusion These findings evidence poor sleep quality in SMS and the need to implement evidence-based interventions in this population.

Previous studies have observed worse sleep quality in patients undergoing conventional dialysis as compared to daily dialysis. Our aim was to compare the sleep parameters of patients undergoing daily or conventional dialysis using an objective measure (actigraphy). This cross-sectional study was performed in three dialysis centers, including a convenience sample (nonprobability sampling) of 73 patients (36 patients on daily hemodialysis and 37 patients on conventional hemodialysis). The following parameters were evaluated: nocturnal total sleep time (NTST), expressed in minutes; wake time after sleep onset (WASO), expressed in minutes; number of nighttime awakenings; daytime total sleep time (DTST), expressed in minutes; number of daytime naps; and nighttime percentage of sleep (% sleep). The Mini-Mental State Examination and the Beck Depression Inventory were also administered. The mean age was 53.4  ±  17.0 years. After adjustment of confounding factors using multiple linear regression analysis, no difference in actigraphy parameters was detected between the groups: NTST (p=0.468), WASO (p=0.88), % sleep (p=0.754), awakenings (p=0.648), naps (p=0.414), and DTST (p=0.805). Different from previous studies employing qualitative analysis, the present assessment did not observe an influence of hemodialysis modality on objective sleep parameters in chronic renal patients.
