Magnaporthe oryzae 2539 was previously found to be avirulent to most rice cultivars and, therefore, was assumed to carry many avirulence (AVR) genes. However, only one AVR gene, AVR1-CO39, which corresponds to a resistance (R) gene Pi-CO39(t) in rice cv. CO39, has been found from 2539 thus far. In order to identify more AVR genes, we isolated 228 progeny strains from a cross between 2539 and Guy11, an M. oryzae strain with strong virulence on rice, and inoculated these strains onto 23 rice accessions (22 individual cultivars and a mixture of 14 cultivars) that are all resistant to 2539 but susceptible to Guy11. Unexpectedly, the experimental results indicated that the avirulence of 2539 on these rice cultivars appeared to be controlled only by the AVR1-CO39 locus. Consistent with this result, we further found that all except one of the rice cultivars were resistant to two transformed Guy11 strains carrying a 1.05-kb fragment containing the AVR1-CO39 gene from 2539. These results suggest that AVR1-CO39 is a predominant locus controlling the broad avirulence of 2539 on cultivated rice. Based on the results of this study and other previous studies, we infer that AVR1-CO39 is a species-wise rather than a cultivar-wise host-specific AVR locus of M. oryzae for rice.

Abstract Increasing resistance to aging is conducive to seed storage and germination rate of crop. Meanwhile, the resistance to aging is one of the important adaptive mechanisms of weed to thrive in farmland. Weedy rice (Oryza sativa f. spontanea) and cultivated rice (Oryza sativa L.) provide a unique pair demonstrating a weed and conspecific model crop that can be used to study the aging resistance of plants across a diverse geographical range. Chinese weedy rice derived from de-domestication of cultivated rice has rapidly risen to malignant weeds, though the hazard has only been reported for about 20 years. Whether weedy rice rapidly evolves higher seed aging resistance than cultivated rice during the process of dedomestication, which is conducive to its persistence in rice fields, is still unclear. In this experiment, the seeds of weed rice populations and their co-existing rice varieties were collected from 61 regions of China and germinated under normal and high temperatures for consecutive four years (2013–2016). Our study found that the aging resistance of weedy rice was higher than that of the co-existing rice cultivars, and weedy rice may have evolved a different aging resistance mechanism than rice cultivars and could be used as a germplasm resource to cultivate aging-resistant rice. The indica-type has strong aging resistance and no dormancy, while the japonica type has weak aging resistance and a little weak dormancy. Thus, by introducing indica-type aging-resistant alleles into japonica rice, cultivation of aging-resistant japonica rice could be possible.

The segregation of avirulence/virulence was studied in 115 F1 progeny isolates of Magnaporthe oryzae from a cross of two field isolates on three Japanese race-differential rice cultivars Kanto 51, Fukunishiki, and Toride 1. The χ2 tests of goodness-of-fit for a 1:1 ratio indicated that avirulence on cvs. Kanto 51, Fukunishiki, and Toride 1 was under monogenic control. The relationship between the avirulence (Avr) gene in the parental isolate and the Avr gene in the standard isolate was investigated by using 100 lines each of three F3 families from the crosses of the rice cultivars Norin 3/Kanto 51, AK61/Fukunishiki, and Norin 3/Toride 1, respectively. Based on the resistant reactions of the F3 rice lines to the parental isolates and the standard isolates harboring three known Avr genes, three genetically independent Avr genes, AvrPik, AvrPiz, and AvrPiz-t, were identified. The three identified Avr genes were mapped using random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis, and a partial linkage map was constructed with 17 RAPD markers closely linked to the Avr genes. Twelve markers and AvrPik, three markers and AvrPiz, and two markers and AvrPiz-t, as well as mating locus MAT1, constructed linkage groups A, B, and C, respectively.

The objective of this work is to perform a prospective analysis of the wavelengths that can be used to recognize a rice crop due to its phenological status and variety. For this purpose, field measurements of spectral signature in the 350 nm -1049 nm range were employed. The rice cultivars FCA 616FL and IDIAP 54-05 were used. The study site was located in the Juan Hombrón area in the Coclé province, Panama. A principal component analysis (PCA) was carried out, which resulted in the lengths 728.16, 677.89 and 785.48 nm let phenological differentiation within the cultivar FCA 616FL and IDIAP 54-05, the lengths 729.72, 814.58 and 666.81 nm let distinguish between crop varieties FCA 616FL and IDIAP 54-05 in vegetative phase. Keywords: Rice, reflectance, hyperspectral signature, phonological state.

The trace element Selenium (Se) has a dual role in the growth and metabolism of plants. Low concentration of selenium (2 ?M selenate) promotes growth and counteracts the detrimental effects of abiotic stress as opposed to higher levels (?10 ?M) where it acts as a pro-oxidant. We focused on both individual and interactive influence of selenate and sulphate on thiol metabolism in seedlings of rice cultivars, satabdi and khitish. Inhibition of ascorbate contents by about 17% on an average, in the test seedlings treated with Se correlated with increased activities of ascorbate peroxidase and ascorbate oxidase in the cultivars. The glutathione levels also increased significantly, on an average by about 102% in roots and 74% in shoots of cv. satabdi compared to a rise, by about 49% in roots and 56% in shoots of cv. khitish. The elevated level of glutathione coincided with the stimulatory influence of Se on its regulatory enzymes. Concomitantly the levels of ?-tocopherol and phytochelatins were also induced in both the test cultivars. Increase in ?-tocopherol activity reached a maximum by about 47% in roots and 80% in shoots of cv. satabdi whereas it increased by about 36% in roots and about 64% in shoots of cv. khitish. Substantive increase in the levels of PC4 followed by PC2 and PC3 was also noted. The effects were found to be less conspicuous in shoots than in roots. Rice seedlings exposed to combined Se and 10mM sulphate treatments showed improved growth and development as a result of better thiol metabolism due to amelioration of the adverse effects caused by selenium alone on all the parameters tested.
