This paper describes the isolation of an algicidal strain, Stenotrophomonas rhizophila KC1, from mangrove (Kandelia candel), and its genome, which was sequenced using next-generation sequencing technology. The genome is 5.93 Mb with a G+C content of 63.17%. A total of 3,352 functional proteins were assigned according to KEGG categories. A total of 11,586 protein coding genes, 73 tRNA genes, and 17 rRNA genes were obtained. In silico genome annotation protocols identified 83 putative quorum sensing (QS) genes, and the algicidal potential of KC1 was related with the QS genes (for example LuxI-LuxR genes). Collectively, these data suggest that KC1 may be an antialgal bacterium whose behavior can be modulated by QS signaling. The annotated genome sequence of this strain may represent a valuable tool for studying algae–bacteria interactions and developing microbe-based methods for controlling harmful algae.

Scolopendra mutilans L. Koch, 1878 is an important Chinese animal with thousands of years of medicinal history. However, the genomic information of this species is limited, which hinders its further application. Here, the complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of S. mutilans was sequenced and assembled by next-generation sequencing. The genome is 15,011 bp in length, consisting of 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 14 tRNA genes, and two rRNA genes. Most PCGs start with the ATN initiation codon, and all PCGs have the conventional stop codons TAA and TAG. The S. mutilans mitogenome revealed nine simple sequence repeats (SSRs), and an obviously lower GC content compared with other seven centipede mitogenomes previously sequenced. After analysis of homologous regions between the eight centipede mitogenomes, the S. mutilans mitogenome further showed clear genomic rearrangements. The phylogenetic analysis of eight centipedes using 13 conserved PCG genes was finally performed. The phylogenetic reconstructions showed Scutigeromorpha as a separate group, and Scolopendromorpha in a sister-group relationship with Lithobiomorpha and Geophilomorpha. Collectively, the S. mutilans mitogenome provided new genomic resources, which will improve its medicinal research and applications in the future.

Development of next generation sequencing rapidly increased the number of total mitogenome in data bases. However, the documented number of total mitogenome from species of Tettigoniinae is still limited and a comparison at subfamily level has not been made sufficiently. This paper aims to describe total mitogenome of A. babadaghi (Orthoptera, Tettigoniidae) by comparing to the known mitogenomes of other Tettigoniinae. The total mitogenome of A. babadaghi is 15882–15883 bp, AT skewed with 70.2% AT percentage, and consists of 13 protein coding genes (PCG), 22 tRNA genes, two rRNA genes and an AT rich control region. The genes are ordered as in pancrustacean. The comparative description of mitogenomes in Tettigoniinae showed that total length varies between 15766-16788 bp, the start codon for protein coding genes almost always fits to the ATN pattern, the stop codons are incomplete T-- / TA- and rarely complete TAA, intergenic spacers (IGS) and overlapping regions (OR) in species of the subfamily are similar in number, location, length and nucleotide sequence. We arrived to following conclusion from comparative data: (i) A. babadaghi has a typical orthopteran mitogenome by general features; (ii) this generalisation seems valid for Tettigoniinae as gene content, gene location, gene order, average AT content, anticodons and secondary structure of the tRNA genes, the start and stop codons of the protein coding genes, and several IGSs/ORs are similar to other orthopteran and hexapopods, (iii) variation range in total mitogenome length is narrow in Tettigoniinae and mainly determined by the lengths of control region and total IGSs, (iv) mitogenome of the subfamily exhibits conserved patterns especially in overlapping regions, but conserved features are mostly plesiomorphic.

Willow is a widely used dioecious woody plant ofSalicaceaefamily in China. Due to their high biomass yields, willows are promising sources for bioenergy crops. In this study, we assembled the complete mitochondrial (mt) genome sequence ofS. suchowensiswith the length of 644,437 bp using Roche-454 GS FLX Titanium sequencing technologies. Base composition of theS. suchowensismt genome is A (27.43%), T (27.59%), C (22.34%), and G (22.64%), which shows a prevalent GC content with that of other angiosperms. This long circular mt genome encodes 58 unique genes (32 protein-coding genes, 23 tRNA genes and 3 rRNA genes), and 9 of the 32 protein-coding genes contain 17 introns. Through the phylogenetic analysis of 35 species based on 23 protein-coding genes, it is supported thatSalixas a sister toPopulus. With the detailed phylogenetic information and the identification of phylogenetic position, some ribosomal protein genes and succinate dehydrogenase genes are found usually lost during evolution. As a native shrub willow species, this worthwhile research ofS. suchowensismt genome will provide more desirable information for better understanding the genomic breeding and missing pieces of sex determination evolution in the future.
