Abstract Aim Shared mental models between surgeons and scrub nurses allow them to effectively communicate with each other and react efficiently to intraoperative complications. Microsurgery poses unique challenges including the use of an operating microscope, fine instruments, and restricted views of the operative field. Our aim was to design and deliver a microsurgical skills session for theatre nurses and evaluate whether attendance influenced perceived understanding of microsurgery and ability in day-to-day role. Method A microsurgical training day for theatre nurses was delivered. This consisted of an introduction to and positioning of the operating microscope and three practical stations involving increasingly complex motor tasks, designed to highlight the importance of instrument handling and improve awareness of microsurgical challenges. Consultant plastic surgeons acted as scrub nurses to add an element of role-reversal. Qualitative and quantitative feedback was collected. Results Eight theatre nurses participated, all responded ‘strongly agree’ or ‘agree’ that the training was enjoyable, improved their understanding of microsurgery and was relevant and helpful to their day-to-day role. All attendees strongly agreed that they would partake in similar sessions in the future. Conclusions Role-reversal and skills-based training is a valuable tool in improving multidisciplinary collaboration in microsurgery. Increasing shared knowledge of complex procedures prospers effective teamwork and communication, which leads to improved efficiency and better patient care. Our study is a first step towards development of a standardized microsurgical skills course for theatre nurses and has broader implications for interprofessional education across all surgical specialties.

Due to ethical and medical-legal drawbacks, high costs, and difficulties of accessibility that are inherent to the practice of basic surgical skills on living patients, fresh human cadaver, and live animals, the search for alternative forms of training is needed. In this study, the teaching and learning process of basic surgical skills pertinent to plastic surgery during medical education on different inanimate bench models as a form of alternative and complementary training to the teaching programs already established is proposed.

Abstract Advance care planning (ACP) helps to ensure future healthcare is congruent with individual preferences. Curricula for health-focused professions rarely include ACP content. This is a repeated measures evaluation of an innovative, interprofessional student training to enhance the ability to lead ACP discussions. Outcomes were measured via self-report surveys at two timepoints (baseline = T1 [n = 35]; posttraining follow-up = T2 [n = 20]) and included validated measures of communication self-efficacy, ACP self-efficacy, and interprofessional teamwork. Data collection from a third timepoint (T3), following randomized group assignment is currently underway. The matched T1–T2 sample (N = 17) included students from medicine (64.7%), nursing (17.6%), and social work (17.6%). Participants were largely young (M=26 years), non-Hispanic (94.0%), White (59.0%), and female (71.0%). Paired t tests examined change from T1 to T2 for all outcomes. Despite worse communication self-efficacy (Mdiff=1.6, p<.001) and ACP self-efficacy (Mdiff=.92, p<.001), perceptions of interprofessional teamwork improved (Mdiff=3.0, p=.008). These T1–T2 findings mirror results from similar, prior research, which subsequently discovered that both self-efficacy outcomes and their effect sizes for change worsened at T2, but ultimately and substantially improved at T3. These fluctuations suggest participants initially overestimated their self-efficacy related to ACP at T1 and corrected their appraisals at T2. Other studies should account for this self-correction. Further replication is needed to understand the dip that appears to occur before anticipated improvements occur.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a severe and debilitating disorder with significant medical and psychological sequelae. To date, there are no effective treatments for adults, resulting in high rates of chronicity, morbidity, and mortality. Recent advances in brain imaging research have led to an improved understanding of etiology and specific neurobiological mechanisms underlying symptoms. Despite this, there are no treatments focused on targeting symptoms using this empirically supported mechanistic understanding of the illness. Updated treatment approaches focused on targeting neurobiological mechanisms underlying core AN symptomatology are necessary to improve treatment out-comes for this population. Neurobiologically Enhanced With Family Eating Disorder Trait Response Treatment (NEW FED TR) is a neurobiologically informed treatment targeting key temperament constructs associated with the illness through the delivery of psychoeducation and skills training to patients and nominated carers.
