Edward Arthur Milne was born at Hull on 14 February 1896. His father Sidney Arthur Milne, one of the thirteen children of Joshua Milne of H.M. Customs, Hull, was headmaster of St Mary’s Church of England School, Salthouse Lane, Hull. He was a man of high ideals and steadfast religious convictions and Milne had no hesitation in describing his father as the greatest influence in his early life. Milne’s mother, Edith Milne, nee Cockcroft, who survives him with her youngest son, was born at Pontefract. Arthur—he was always known by his second Christian name—was the eldest of three brothers who all entered upon scientific careers.

‘John Wesley and the origins of Methodism’ explains that John Wesley never had any intention to form a movement or church. The early life of John Wesley and his brother Charles is described. In the 1730s, his life was redirected from academia in a series of developments that led him to become an extraordinary evangelist and spiritual director. Preaching in the open air was the first of many innovations for Wesley and was pivotal in the spread of Methodism. By the early 1750s, Methodism had become an evangelical order within the Church of England. The severe challenges faced by Methodism and the spread of Methodism to North America are also described.

This article examines the intellectual and ecclesiastical baggage which W. G. Broughton brought with him when he came to New South Wales as Archdeacon in 1829 by tracing Broughton's early life and education, his early ministry and scholarly writings, and identifying Broughton's circle of friends in the Church of England. The travel diary which Broughton kept on his journey to New South Wales is examined for his estimate of the books he read while on ship. Broughton emerges from this study as a person of considerable scholarly talent, and a member of the old High Church group by both theological, and political conviction as well as personal friendships.

Leonard Rotherham was born in Sutton-in-Ashfield, near Nottingham, on 31 August 1913 and his early life went through difficult times. His father, Bernard Rotherham, who left school at the age of 13, first became a coalminer, and later started a small haulage business with two lorries and a bus with solid tyres. The business prospered for a while but was sold up during the recession and his father returned to coal mining at the Welbeck colliery. Leonard's mother, Jane Rotherham, died when he was 10 years old; his father felt unable to look after his son and sent him to live with an aunt, Mrs Rhoda Page, who also had four sons of her own. By all accounts, Mrs Page was an inspirational woman, although the family lived on a poor farm with very little money. However, Leonard went to the Crich Church of England primary school, where he attracted the interest and support of the headmaster, a Mr Haywood; this marked a turning point for him. From this school Leonard won a scholarship to The Herbert Strutt School in Belper, Derbyshire. This school was founded in the name of a famous family, for Jedediah Strutt was once a partner of Richard Arkwright's; together they established the first cotton mill in Nottingham. At this school he met Nora Mary Thompson, whom he would marry in 1937. From here he won a scholarship from the Nottingham branch of the newly formed Mineworkers Union, a Derby County Major Scholarship, as well as a State Scholarship. With this combined support, he gained a place at University College London, where, in 1934, he obtained a first-class honours degree in physics with subsidiary mathematics. A year later he received an MSc from the same institution for research on the viscosity of liquids performed under the supervision of Professor E.N. da C. Andrade (FRS 1935). Following his decision to undertake research in industry, Rotherham joined the large steelmaking company Firth–Brown in Sheffield in 1935. He was appointed as a physicist in the research department under the direction of Dr William H. Hatfield (FRS 1935), who was Head of the Brown–Firth Research Laboratories. Their name was peculiarly reversed from that of the company, although they were totally integrated within it.

Evelyn Underhill (1875–1941) was a guiding light in Anglican spirituality in the twentieth century, and her best-known works, Mysticism (1911) and Worship (1936) are still read and studied today. A prolific writer—theologian, poet, novelist—she is frequently anthologized. Her early life and writings—those undertaken before she became an actively-committed member of the Church of England in the 1920s—are, with the exception of Mysticism, less well-known. This article examines the early works that treat the Virgin Mary, and explain how that subject may have influenced the pacifism she later embraced. A feminist reading of those early works also suggests biographical links to her “care for souls,” or spiritual direction, and to her own family. The dutiful child of somewhat remote and distant parents, herself in a childless marriage, Underhill's spiritual nurture by way of Mary helps explain both her spiritual growth and her role as a spiritual director to others.

Abstract.This study examined whether perinatal exposure to polluted eels (Anguilla anguilla L.) induces changes in the locomotor activity of offspring mice across lifespan (post-natal days (PNDs) 47 – 329), using the open field and the home cage activity tests. Dams were exposed during gestation and lactation, through diets enriched in eels naturally contaminated with pollutants including PCBs. Analysis of the eel muscle focused on the six non-dioxin-like (NDL) indicator PCBs (Σ6 NDL-PCBs: 28, 52, 101, 138, 153 and 180). Four groups of dams (n = 10 per group) received either a standard diet without eels or eels (0.8 mg/kg/day) containing 85, 216, or 400 ng/kg/day of ϵ6 NDL-PCBs. The open field test showed that early-life exposure to polluted eels increased locomotion in female offspring of exposed dams but not in males, compared to controls. This hyperlocomotion appeared later in life, at PNDs 195 and 329 (up to 32 % increase, p < 0.05). In addition, overactivity was observed in the home cage test at PND 305: exposed offspring females showed a faster overall locomotion speed (3.6 – 4.2 cm/s) than controls (2.9 cm/s, p <0.05); again, males remained unaffected. Covered distances in the home cage test were only elevated significantly in offspring females exposed to highest PCB concentrations (3411 ± 590 cm vs. 1377 ± 114 cm, p < 0.001). These results suggest that early-life exposure to polluted eels containing dietary contaminants including PCBs caused late, persistent and gender-dependent neurobehavioral hyperactive effects in offspring mice. Furthermore, female hyperactivity was associated with a significant inhibition of acetylcholinesterase activity in the hippocampus and the prefrontal cortex.
