In 1863, Heer and Pengelly published in the ‘Phil. Trans.’ an account of these lignite-beds and their flora. Heer classed the lignite as Lower Miocene, considering it equivalent to the Aquitanian of Prance and to the Hamstead Beds of the Isle of Wight. These latter are now referred to the Middle Oligocene, and many of the other deposits called Lower Miocene in Heer’s day are now classed as Upper Oligocene. A statement by Mr. Starkie Gardner, that Heer’s Bovey plants are the same as those found in the Bournemouth Beds (Middle Eocene), has caused the Bovey Beds to be classed as Eocene in recent text-books and on recent maps of the Geological Survey, leaving a great gap in the geological record in Britain. Every division, from Upper Oligocene to Upper Miocene, was supposed to be missing.

The lignite of Bovey Tracey, in Devon, was fully described by Oswald Heer and Pengelly in these ‘ Transactions,' and there is no need to repeat their description. The conclusion Heer came to, from the study of the fossil plants (except a single beetle there were no other fossils), was that the deposit “must be referred to the Lower Miocene division and to the Aquitanian stage of it,” or as we should now put it, the strata were Upper Oligocene or, perhaps, Lower Miocene. Heer also considered it to be equivalent to the Hamstead Beds of the Isle of Wight, which we now know are somewhat earlier than the Aquitanian and are of Middle Oligocene date. Doubt has since been thrown on these conclusions by Mr. Starkie Gardner, who considered that the flora collected by Heer and Pengelly is identical with that of the Bournemouth Beds (Middle Eocene). Mr. Gardner appears to have made no collections at Bovey, and in his Bournemouth collections (now in the Museum of Natural History) we can find nothing to justify this statement. Perhaps this extreme view is somewhat modified by later changes in the identification of some of the plants.

The Cenozoic Malaguide Basin from Sierra Espuña (Internal Betic Zone, S Spain) due to the quality of outcropping, areal representation, and continuity in the sedimentation can be considered a key-basin. In the last 30 years, a large number of studies with very different methodological approaches have been done in the area. Models indicate an evolution from passive margin to wedge-top basin from Late Cretaceous to Early Miocene. Sedimentation changes from limestone platforms with scarce terrigenous inputs, during the Paleocene to Early Oligocene, to the deep basin with huge supplies of turbidite sandstones and conglomerates during the Late Oligocene to Early Miocene. The area now appears structured as an antiformal stack with evidence of synsedimentary tectonics. The Cenozoic tectono-sedimentary basin evolution is related to three phases: (1) flexural tectonics during most of the Paleogene times to create the basin; (2) fault and fold compartmentation of the basin with the creation of structural highs and subsiding areas related to blind-fault-propagation folds, deforming the basin from south to north during Late Oligocene to Early Aquitanian times; (3) thin-skin thrusting tectonics when the basin began to be eroded during the Late Aquitanian-Burdigalian. In recent times some works on the geological heritage of the area have been performed trying to diffuse different geological aspects of the sector to the general public. A review of the studies performed and the revisiting of the area allow proposing different key-outcrops to follow the tectono-sedimentary evolution of the Cenozoic basin from this area. Eight sites of geological interest have been selected (Cretaceous-Cenozoic boundary, Paleocene Mula Fm, Lower Eocene Espuña-Valdelaparra Fms, Middle Eocene Malvariche-Cánovas Fms, Lowermost Oligocene As Fm, Upper Oligocene-Lower Aquitanian Bosque Fm, Upper Oligocene-Aquitanian Río Pliego Fm, Burdigalian El Niño Fm) and an evaluation has been performed to obtain four parameters: the scientific value, the educational and touristic potential, and the degradation risk. The firsts three parameters obtained values above 50 being considered of “high” or “very high” interest (“very high” in most of the cases). The last parameter shows always values below 50 indicating a “moderate” or “low” risk of degradation. The obtained values allow us considering the tectono-sedimentary evolution of this basin worthy of being proposed as a geological heritage.

The author, who has long been engaged on the Palæozoics of West Cornwall, divided the killas extending westward from Gerrans Bay into four groups that formed a natural sequence. Moreover, as they included definite Lower Silurian horizons, as characterized by the fossiliferous quartzite of Carne, these divisions were linked with the Lower Palæozoics. They consist of the Veryan, Portscatho, Falmouth, and Mylor groups. On the latest issues of the old Survey maps the area occupied by the first of these divisions is coloured as Silurian, and the region occupied by the remainder as Devonian. That colouring, however, was not adopted by De la Beche, who surveyed the region, nor was it the result of any subsequent survey of the area. In the original Geological Survey map of Cornwall the killas was separated by De la Beche into two divisions, viz., a grauwacke group and a carbonaceous series. Thus, the former lying below the Culm-measures was undifferentiated for the reason, as explained in his Report, that the progress of geology at that time only warranted the broadest generalizations. He moreover expressed the opinion that the terms Cambrian and Silurian should be restricted to the areas that gave rise to the prolonged researches of Murchison and Sedgwick, and deprecated the extension of that nomenclature to districts that had not received the same detailed investigations. In a later and undated issue of the map the grauwacke group is divided into Devonian and Silurian, presumably by the authority Sir Roderick Murchison. The Devonian colour was not only applied to fossiliferous strata in East and Mid Cornwall, but was extended over the unfossiliferous strata in the west. The Silurian tint, on the other hand, was restricted to a zone that had yielded organic remains. Murchison, however, was of opinion that the older zone extended far beyond those limits into the barren strata coloured as Devonian, and it is evident that the latter tint was adopted as a matter of convenience, as no re-examination of the area seems to have been undertaken. The known Silurian region was confined to the coastal belt between Chapel Point and Gerrans Bay, a boundary connecting those localities admitting of the ready isolation of that zone from the rest of the country. That such a broad generalization, however, was only regarded as provisional may be inferred from the absence of a line on the map between the two divisions. It will be seen, therefore, that the subdivision of the killas, as the result of the recent survey, neither invalidates the map published by De la Beche nor the subsequent conclusions of Murcliison. It has, on the other hand, not only brought their generalizations within more definite limits, but has carried the investigation a step farther by demonstrating the relations between the older and newer Palæozoics of Cornwall.

For many years composite minor intrusions, both sills and dykes, have been known from various parts of the world and most petrologists must have speculated as to the probable effect produced in the event of such composite intrusions having reached the surface in the form of an effusion. For obvious reasons it has not been found possible to trace a composite dyke upwards into a lava flow. However, during the revision of 1 inch Sheet 30 (Renfrewshire) for the Geological Survey, the author encountered, in the neighbourhood of Inverkip, a small village on the Firth of Clyde south of Greenock, certain peculiar lava flows which are believed to represent the effusive equivalents of composite minor intrusions. These “composite lavas”, which form the main subject of the present paper, are of Lower Carboniferous age (Calciferous Sandstone Series) and occur interbedded among the more normal flows towards the base of the volcanic group. Two distinct rock varieties, one highly porphyritic, with large phenocrysts (up to 1·5 cms. long) of basic plagioclase, and the other non-porphyritic, are associated within the same flow. The porphyritic type always forms the upper part of the flow and overlies the non-porphyritic; the junction shows unmistakable evidence that both were in a fluid state along their mutual contact at the time of emplacement.

The publication of the 1:500 000 Skjoldungen map sheet (Escher, 1990; Fig. 1) marks the completion of the Geological Survey of Greenland's (GGU's) reconnaissance mapping activities in South-East Greenland. A descriptive text to the map is under preparation. All of South-East Greenland between Kap Farvel (59° 00´N) and Mesters Vig (72° 00´N) is now covered by sheets of the 1:500 000 geological map series of Greenland. Five sheets in the series (nos 5,6,9, 10 and 11) remain to be published (Fig. 1); the Thule map sheet (sheet 5) will be printed in the course of 1991, and sheet 10 is under compilation. The presentation of the Skjoldungen map is somewhat different from that of the other 1:500 000 maps inthe series. In addition to traditional lithological information, an effort has been made to show the tectonic/metamorphic development of the region during the Archaean and Proterozoic.

Three new or from this site previously unrecorded birds are described from the Middle Eocene of Messel (Hessen, Germany). <i>Serudaptus pohli</i> n. gen. n. sp. is a new taxon of the Pseudasturidae and is distinguished from the other species of this family by its short and stout tarsometatarsus and the long and strong claws. An isolated foot of a gruiform bird is assigned to <i>Idiornis</i> cf. <i>itardiensis</i> (Idiornithidae) and would, if this assignment can be confirmed, demonstrate the existence of this species for a period of 23 million years. The proportions of the toes suggest that <i>Idiornis</i> cf. <i>itardiensis</i> was less cursorial than its next recent relatives, the Cariamidae. In addition thereto, an exceptionally well preserved skeleton of a sandcoleid bird (Coliiformes: Sandcoleidae) gives new information on the osteology and feathering of sandcoleid birds. The specimen resembles the genera <i>Eoglaucidium</i> and <i>Anneavis</i> but it has not been possible to assign it to one of these two genera with certainty. <br><br> Drei neue oder von dieser Fundstelle bisher nicht nachgewiesene Vögel werden aus dem Mittel-Eozän von Messel (Hessen, Deutschland) beschrieben. <i>Serudaptus pohli</i> n. gen. n. sp. ist ein neues Taxon der Pseudasturidae und unterscheidet sich von den anderen Arten dieser Familie durch den kurzen und gedrungenen Tarsometatarsus und die langen, kräftigen Krallen. Der isolierte Fuß eines gruiformen Vogels wird <i>Idiornis</i> cf. <i>itardiensis</i> (Idiornithidae) zugeordnet und würde, wenn sich diese Zuordnung bestätigt, die Existenz dieser Art über einen Zeitraum von 23 Millionen Jahren zeigen. Die Zehenproportionen legen nahe, dass <i>Idiornis</i> cf. <i>itardiensis</i> weniger an eine laufende Lebensweise angepasst war als seine nächsten rezenten Verwandten, die Cariamidae. Darüber hinaus zeigt ein außergewöhnlich gut erhaltenes Skelett eines Vertreters der Sandcoleidae bisher unbekannte Einzelheiten der Osteologie und Befiederung dieser Familie.
