An aerobic, Gram-negative, non-motile, yellow-to-orange pigmented and rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain SM1T, was isolated from seawater in Thailand and subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic study. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that the novel isolate shared 93–95 % sequence similarity with species of the genus Myroides. The DNA–DNA relatedness values of strain SM1T with Myroides odoratimimus JCM 7460T and Myroides odoratus JCM 7458T were below 70 %. The DNA G+C content of strain SM1T was 33.6 mol%, the major menaquinone was MK-6 and the major fatty acids were C15 : 0 iso, C17 : 1 ω9c iso and C17 : 0 iso 3-OH. Based on its phenotypic and chemotaxonomic characteristics, strain SM1T was classified as representing a novel species of the genus Myroides, for which the name Myroides pelagicus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is SM1T (=IAM 15337T=KCTC 12661T).

Two strains of pink-coloured bacteria, 5516T-9T and 5516T-11T, were isolated from an air sample collected in Korea. The taxonomic status of these novel strains was investigated by means of a polyphasic approach. The novel strains were Gram-positive, aerobic, non-spore-forming and coccus-shaped bacteria. The DNA G+C contents of strains 5516T-9T and 5516T-11T were 61.0 and 59.3 mol%, respectively. The major isoprenoid quinone for both strains was MK-8. Strain 5516T-9T contained summed feature 3 (iso-C15 : 0 2-OH and/or C16 : 1 ω7c), C16 : 0 and iso-C17 : 1 ω9c, and strain 5516T-11T contained summed feature 3, iso-C17 : 1 ω9c, C17 : 1 ω8c and C15 : 1 ω6c as the major fatty acids (>10 %). The polar lipid patterns of both strains were similar, comprising one phospholipid and one aminophospholipid as the major components. Phylogenetic analyses using 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that both novel strains were affiliated to the genus Deinococcus. Strain 5516T-9T exhibited the highest sequence similarity with Deinococcus marmoris DSM 12784T (96.8 %) and strain 5516T-11T showed the highest sequence similarity with Deinococcus saxicola DSM 15974T (94.5 %). The sequence similarity between strains 5516T-9T and 5516T-11T was 94.7 %. On the basis of the data presented, it is evident that both strains represent separate novel species of the genus Deinococcus for which the names Deinococcus aerolatus sp. nov. (type strain 5516T-9T=KACC 12745T=JCM 15442T) and Deinococcus aerophilus sp. nov. (type strain 5516T-11T=KACC 12746T=JCM 15443T) are proposed.

Two non-motile, orange- or yellow-pigmented bacteria, designated strains KYW48T and KYW147T, were isolated from seawater collected from the South Sea, Republic of Korea. Cells of both strains were Gram-reaction-negative, aerobic and catalase- and oxidase-positive. The major fatty acids of strain KYW48T were C18 : 1ω7c (35.3 %), summed feature 3 (iso-C15 : 0 2-OH and/or C16 : 1ω7c) (22.7 %), C17 : 1ω6c (19.8 %), C14 : 0 2-OH (7.4 %) and C16 : 0 (5.9 %), and those of strain KYW147T were C18 : 1ω7c (36.0 %), summed feature 3 (18.3 %), C16 : 0 (14.7 %), 11-methyl C18 : 1ω7c (10.7 %), C16 : 0 2-OH (9.1 %) and C18 : 1ω9c (8.0 %). The predominant isoprenoid quinone of both strains was ubiquinone 10 (Q-10). The DNA G+C contents of strains KYW48T and KYW147T were 63.8 and 67.2 mol%, respectively. A phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strains KYW48T and KYW147T were grouped with the members of the family Erythrobacteraceae and formed a distinct clade with the members of the genus Altererythrobacter (<95.7 % sequence similarity). On the basis of the evidence presented in this study, the novel species Altererythrobacter namhicola sp. nov. (type strain KYW48T  = KCTC 22736T  = JCM 16345T) and Altererythrobacter aestuarii sp. nov. (type strain KYW147T  = KCTC 22735T  = JCM 16339T) are proposed.

A novel actinomycete, designated strain 06182M-1T, was isolated from a mangrove soil sample collected from Chiayi County in Taiwan. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed levels of similarity of 97.0–98.8 % to the type strains of recognized species of the genus Isoptericola. Chemotaxonomic data also supported the placement of strain 06182M-1T within the genus Isoptericola. However, the low levels of DNA–DNA relatedness between the novel strain and the type strains of recognized species of the genus Isoptericola, in combination with differential phenotypic data, demonstrate that strain 06182M-1T represents a novel species of the genus Isoptericola, for which the name Isoptericola chiayiensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 06182M-1T ( = BCRC 16888T  = KCTC 19740T).

Three short spore chain-forming actinomycete strains were isolated from soil samples collected from subtropical islands in Japan. The cell-wall peptidoglycan of these strains contained meso-diaminopimelic acid (meso-A2pm), glutamic acid and alanine. The major isoprenoid quinone was MK-9(H4), iso-C16 : 0 and 2-OH iso-C16 : 0 were the major cellular fatty acids and phosphatidylethanolamine was a component of the polar lipids. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 67–69 mol%. Phylogenetic analyses based on the 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the novel strains consistently formed a monophyletic cluster with Amycolatopsis taiwanensis. On the basis this polyphasic taxonomical study, it is proposed that the two new isolates represent two novel species: Amycolatopsis helveola (type strain TT00-43T=NBRC 103394T=KCTC 19329T) and Amycolatopsis pigmentata (type strain TT99-32T=NBRC 103392T=KCTC 19330T).

A taxonomic study was performed on strain D7015T, which was isolated from coastal sediment close to a coal-fired power station in Qingdao, China. Cells of strain D7015T were Gram-positive, non-motile, diphtheroid rods that grew in the presence of 0–8 % (w/v) NaCl and at 4–37 °C, with optimum growth at 1 % (w/v) NaCl and 30–32 °C. The DNA G+C content was 65.0 mol%. The major fatty acids were C18 : 1 ω9c (56.18 %), C16 : 0 (38.02 %), C16 : 1 ω7c (4.45 %), C18 : 0 (1.0 %) and C14 : 0 (0.35 %). On the basis of morphological, physiological and phylogenetic characteristics, strain D7015T was classified in the genus Corynebacterium. It exhibited a 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of 95.9 % and a DNA–DNA relatedness value of 20.4 % with Corynebacterium halotolerans DSM 44683T. Strain D7015T was sufficiently different from recognized species of the genus Corynebacterium to be considered to represent a novel species. The name Corynebacterium marinum sp. nov. is proposed, with strain D7015T (=CGMCC 1.6998T=NRRL B-24779T) as the type strain.

A Gram-variable, motile, endospore-forming, slightly halophilic bacterial strain, DSW-10T, was isolated from Dokdo, an island located at the edge of the East Sea, Korea, and was characterized taxonomically by using a polyphasic approach. This isolate grew optimally at 37 °C and in the presence of 4–5 % NaCl. Strain DSW-10T had cell-wall peptidoglycan based on meso-diaminopimelic acid, MK-7 as the predominant menaquinone, and anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0 as major fatty acids. Major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and unidentified phospholipids. The DNA G+C content was 36·7 mol%. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain DSW-10T is phylogenetically affiliated to the genus Virgibacillus, and exhibited sequence similarity of 95·3–98·7 % to the type strains of Virgibacillus species. DNA–DNA relatedness levels between strain DSW-10T and the type strains of some phylogenetically related Virgibacillus species were in the range 8·4–17·5 %. On the basis of phenotypic properties and phylogenetic and genetic distinctiveness, strain DSW-10T (=KCTC 3933T=DSM 16826T) was classified as the type strain of a novel Virgibacillus species, for which the name Virgibacillus dokdonensis sp. nov. is proposed.

A marine bacterial strain, FR1064T, was isolated from a surface seawater sample collected off Jeju Island, South Korea. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that the isolate belonged to the Gammaproteobacteria and was related to the genus Glaciecola with 97.6 % sequence similarity to Glaciecola pallidula, its nearest phylogenetic neighbour. DNA–DNA relatedness between strain FR1064T and G. pallidula ACAM 615T was 55 %. Cells of the novel isolate were Gram-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped, motile and halophilic, with an optimum sea salts concentration of 4–7 %. The major fatty acids were straight-chain saturated (C16 : 0), summed feature 3 and monounsaturated fatty acid C18 : 1. The DNA G+C content was 44 mol%. Several phenotypic characteristics differentiated the novel isolate from all previously described members of the genus Glaciecola. The polyphasic data obtained in this study clearly demonstrate that strain FR1064T represents a novel species of the genus Glaciecola. The name Glaciecola nitratireducens sp. nov. is therefore proposed, with strain FR1064T (=KCTC 12276T=JCM 12485T) as the type strain.

Three novel strains isolated from brewery environments are described. These strains were Gram-positive, facultatively anaerobic, heterofermentative rods that did not exhibit catalase activity. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity showed that these strains belong to the genus Lactobacillus and are most closely related to Lactobacillus collinoides (approximately 99 % similarity). The novel strains could be differentiated from L. collinoides on the basis of DNA–DNA relatedness, differences in beer-spoilage ability and the inability to utilize d-fructose. These isolates represent a novel species, for which the name Lactobacillus paracollinoides sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is LA2T (=DSM 15502T=JCM 11969T).

A novel actinomycete, designated strain OU-40T, was isolated from farm soil collected from the Hyderabad region of Andhra Pradesh, southern India. The strain was found to have morphological and chemotaxonomic characteristics typical of species of the genus Streptomyces. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain OU-40T belonged to the genus Streptomyces, and was related most closely to Streptomyces pactum NBRC 13433T (99.0 % sequence similarity), Streptomyces olivaceus NBRC 12805T (99.0 %) and Streptomyces parvulus NBRC 13193T (98.8 %). Strain OU-40T could be distinguished from the type strains of its closest phylogenetic relatives based on levels of DNA–DNA relatedness and comparison of morphological and phenotypic data. It is therefore concluded that strain OU-40T represents a novel species of the genus Streptomyces, for which the name Streptomyces hyderabadensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is OU-40T (=CCTCC AA 209024T =PCM 2692T).

A novel bacterial strain, designated JBR12T, was isolated from sediment of a shallow stream in Cheonan, Korea. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain JBR12T belongs to the genus Emticicia, and indicated that its closest relatives are Emticicia oligotrophica DSM 17448T (97.8  % sequence similarity) and E. ginsengisoli Gsoil 085T (94.3  %). A DNA–DNA hybridization experiment revealed < 70  % genomic relatedness between strain JBR12T and E. oligotrophica DSM 17448T. The major fatty acids (>5  % of the total) were iso-C15 : 0, summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c), iso-C15 : 0 3-OH, anteiso-C15 : 0 and iso-C15 : 0 3-OH. The DNA G+C content of strain JBR12T was 37.7 mol%. According to data from the present polyphasic taxonomic study, strain JBR12T represents a novel species of the genus Emticicia, for which the name Emticicia sediminis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is JBR12T ( = KACC 17466T = JCM 19321T).
