An actinobacterial strain was isolated from subarctic forest soil, and subjected to polyphasic taxonomic characterization. The cell-wall peptidoglycan comprised meso-diaminopimelic acid, alanine and glutamic acid. MK-9(H4) was the predominant isoprenoid quinone, and iso-C17 : 0, iso-C15 : 0 and C16 : 0 were detected as the major cellular fatty acids. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that this organism was related to members of the suborders Kineosporiineae and Micrococcineae. The phenotypic properties readily differentiated this organism from the phylogenetic neighbours. Based on the phenotypic and genotypic evidence, the strain is assigned to a novel species of a novel genus: Angustibacter luteus gen. nov., sp. nov. with type strain TT07R-79T (=NBRC 105387T =KACC 14249T).

A thermophilic actinomycete, strain LA5T, was isolated from a hot spring in Yunnan province, People's Republic of China. The isolate grew aerobically at temperatures of 50–75 °C. Aerobic mycelia were not observed. Single spores were produced along the substrate hypha. Strain LA5T was characterized chemotaxonomically by having MK-7 as the predominant menaquinone and iso-C17 : 0 (27.7 %) and C16 : 0 (22.4 %) as the major fatty acids. The cell wall contained meso-diaminopimelic acid. The DNA G+C content was 56.8 mol%. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain LA5T belongs to the genus Planifilum. Levels of DNA–DNA relatedness between strain LA5T and Planifilum fimeticola H0165T and Planifilum fulgidum 500275T were 43.6 and 52.7 %, respectively. On the basis of phenotypic properties and phylogeny, strain LA5T represents a novel species of the genus Planifilum, for which we propose the name Planifilum yunnanense sp. nov., with the type strain LA5T (=CCTCC AA206002T=KCTC 13052T).

A Gram-stain-positive, rod-shaped, endospore-forming, aerobic bacterium (FJAT-14571T) was isolated from a soil sample in Taiwan. Strain FJAT-14571T grew at 20–40 °C (optimum 35 °C), pH 6–10 (optimum pH 8) and 0–2 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum 0 %). Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain FJAT-14571T was a member of the genus Bacillus and was most closely related to Bacillus oceanisediminis DSM 24771T (96.2 %). DNA–DNA relatedness between strain FJAT-14571T and B. oceanisediminis DSM 24771T was low (32.0 % ± 0.88 %). The diagnostic diamino acid of the peptidoglycan of strain FJAT-14571T was meso-diaminopimelic acid and the predominant menaquinone was MK-7 (96.6 %). The major cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 (46.4 %), anteiso-C15 : 0 (7.6 %), iso-C17 : 0 (8.2 %) and iso-C16 : 0 (10.0 %) and the DNA G+C content was 40.8 mol%. Phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and genotypic properties clearly indicated that strain FJAT-14571T represents a novel species within the genus Bacillus, for which the name Bacillus taiwanensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is FJAT-14571T ( = DSM 27845T = CGMCC1.1 2698T).

A Gram-stain-positive, aerobic, non-motile, psychrophilic bacterium, designated strain Cr6-08T, was isolated from alpine glacier cryoconite. Growth of strain Cr6-08T occurred at 1–25 °C. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain Cr6-08T is most closely related to members of the genus Arthrobacter. Strain Cr6-08T possessed chemotaxonomic properties consistent with those of the genus Arthrobacter, such as peptidoglycan type A3α (l-Lys–l-Ala4), MK-9(H2) as major menaquinone and anteiso- and iso-branched compounds (anteiso-C15 : 0 and iso-C15 : 0) as major cellular fatty acids. The polar lipid profile contained diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, one unknown glycolipid and three unknown polar lipids. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain Cr6-08T was 57.3 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic and chemotaxonomic characteristics, phylogenetic analysis and DNA–DNA relatedness data, strain Cr6-08T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Arthrobacter, for which the name Arthrobacter cryoconiti sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is Cr6-08T ( = DSM 23324T  = LMG 26052T  = CGMCC 1.10698T).

A novel actinomycete strain, designed MW4-36T, was isolated from tropical forest soil in Nakhon Sawan Province, Thailand. Morphological and chemotaxonomic characteristics of this strain clearly demonstrated that it belongs to the genus Dactylosporangium . The strain formed finger-shaped sporangia on short sporangiophores that emerged directly from substrate hyphae. The cell-wall peptidoglycan contained glutamic acid, glycine, alanine and meso-diaminopimelic acid including 3-hydroxy-meso-diaminopimelic acid; arabinose, glucose, rhamnose, ribose and xylose were found as whole-cell sugars. The diagnostic phospholipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylinositol; no phosphatidylcholine was found. The predominant menaquinones were MK-9(H8) and MK-9(H6). Mycolic acids were not detected. The predominant cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C16 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 72.9 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences also indicated that the strain should be classified in the genus Dactylosporangium and showed that the closest relative was Dactylosporangium maewongense JCM 15933T (99.4 % similarity). These taxonomic data revealed that strain MW4-36T could be readily distinguished from its phylogenetically closest relative. On the basis of these phenotypic and genotypic data, strain MW4-36T is considered to represent a novel species, for which the name Dactylosporangium siamense sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is MW4-36T ( = BCC 34901T = NBRC 106093T).

Three short spore chain-forming actinomycete strains were isolated from soil samples collected from subtropical islands in Japan. The cell-wall peptidoglycan of these strains contained meso-diaminopimelic acid (meso-A2pm), glutamic acid and alanine. The major isoprenoid quinone was MK-9(H4), iso-C16 : 0 and 2-OH iso-C16 : 0 were the major cellular fatty acids and phosphatidylethanolamine was a component of the polar lipids. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 67–69 mol%. Phylogenetic analyses based on the 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the novel strains consistently formed a monophyletic cluster with Amycolatopsis taiwanensis. On the basis this polyphasic taxonomical study, it is proposed that the two new isolates represent two novel species: Amycolatopsis helveola (type strain TT00-43T=NBRC 103394T=KCTC 19329T) and Amycolatopsis pigmentata (type strain TT99-32T=NBRC 103392T=KCTC 19330T).

Four Gram-stain-positive, aerobic or facultatively anaerobic, motile, endospore-forming, rod-shaped bacteria, designated strains FeL05T, FeL11, Fek19 and Fek21, were isolated from seeds of hybrid rice (Oryza sativa L. Jinyou 611), and their taxonomic positions were determined using a polyphasic approach. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the four strains were members of the genus Paenibacillus. They showed 95.4 % sequence similarity or less with strains of other Paenibacillus species. The G+C content of strain FeL05T was found to be 53.3 mol%. Its predominant respiratory quinone was MK-7. The predominant cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0 (61.7 %), C16 : 0 (10.9 %), iso-C16 : 0 (7.0 %), anteiso-C17 : 0 (6.7 %) and iso-C15 : 0 (5.2 %). On the basis of its phenotypic properties and phylogenetic distinctiveness, strain FeL05T represents a novel species of the genus Paenibacillus, for which the name Paenibacillus hunanensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is strain FeL05T (=ACCC 10718T =CGMCC 1.8907T =DSM 22170T).

A Gram-variable, motile, endospore-forming, slightly halophilic bacterial strain, DSW-10T, was isolated from Dokdo, an island located at the edge of the East Sea, Korea, and was characterized taxonomically by using a polyphasic approach. This isolate grew optimally at 37 °C and in the presence of 4–5 % NaCl. Strain DSW-10T had cell-wall peptidoglycan based on meso-diaminopimelic acid, MK-7 as the predominant menaquinone, and anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0 as major fatty acids. Major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and unidentified phospholipids. The DNA G+C content was 36·7 mol%. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain DSW-10T is phylogenetically affiliated to the genus Virgibacillus, and exhibited sequence similarity of 95·3–98·7 % to the type strains of Virgibacillus species. DNA–DNA relatedness levels between strain DSW-10T and the type strains of some phylogenetically related Virgibacillus species were in the range 8·4–17·5 %. On the basis of phenotypic properties and phylogenetic and genetic distinctiveness, strain DSW-10T (=KCTC 3933T=DSM 16826T) was classified as the type strain of a novel Virgibacillus species, for which the name Virgibacillus dokdonensis sp. nov. is proposed.

A bacterial strain, designated VA24T, was isolated from forest soil of the Changbai Mountains, Heilongjiang province, China. Cells of strain VA24T were Gram-reaction-negative, aerobic, non-spore-forming, long rods, 0.3–0.5×2.0–3.0 μm in size and were motile by means of a subpolar flagellum. Strain VA24T was oxidase-positive and catalase-negative. Growth occurred at 21–36 °C, pH 5–10 and in 0–2 % (w/v) NaCl but did not occur at 37 °C. The predominant respiratory quinone was Q-8, the major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylmonomethylethanolamine and the major cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 (14.9 %), iso-C17 : 1 ω9c (14.1 %), iso-C17 : 0 (10.8 %) and iso-C16 : 0 (10.3 %). The DNA G+C content was 67.4 mol% (T m). Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain VA24T was closely related to Frateuria aurantia IFO 13300T with 96.9 % sequence similarity. DNA–DNA relatedness of strain VA24T to F. aurantia DSM 6220T was 15.8 %. Based on its phenotypic and genotypic features, strain VA24T represents a novel species of the genus Frateuria, for which the name Frateuria terrea sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is VA24T (=CGMCC 1.7053T =NBRC 104236T).

It grew optimally at 25–28 °C and in the presence of 2 % (w/v) NaCl. Strain DSW-5T contained MK-6 as the predominant menaquinone and iso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 1 and iso-C15 : 0 3-OH as the major fatty acids. The major polar lipids detected were phosphatidylethanolamine, three unidentified phospholipids and an amino-group-containing lipid. The DNA G+C content was 30.0 mol%. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain DSW-5T was most closely related to the genus Polaribacter. Similarity values between the 16S rRNA gene sequences of strain DSW-5T and the type strains of recognized Polaribacter species were in the range 96.2–96.8 %. On the basis of its phenotypic properties and phylogenetic distinctiveness, strain DSW-5T (=KCTC 12392T=DSM 17204T) was classified in the genus Polaribacter as the type strain of a novel species, for which the name Polaribacter dokdonensis sp. nov. is proposed.

A Gram-negative, non-motile, non-spore-forming bacterial strain, DS-44T, was isolated from soil from Dokdo in Korea, and its taxonomic position was investigated by using a polyphasic approach. It grew optimally at 25 °C and in the presence of 2 % (w/v) NaCl. Strain DS-44T contained MK-7 as the predominant menaquinone and iso-C15 : 0 and C16 : 1 ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH as the major fatty acids. The DNA G+C content was 49·0 mol%. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain DS-44T belongs to the genus Algoriphagus of the phylum Bacteroidetes. Similarity values between the 16S rRNA gene sequences of strain DS-44T and those of the type strains of recognized Algoriphagus species were in the range 93·8–95·7 %, making it possible to categorize strain DS-44T as a species that is separate from previously described Algoriphagus species. On the basis of its phenotypic properties and phylogenetic distinctiveness, strain DS-44T (=KCTC 12545T=CIP 108837T) was classified in the genus Algoriphagus as the type strain of a novel species, for which the name Algoriphagus terrigena sp. nov. is proposed.
