A non-motile, rod-shaped, red-pigmented bacterium, designated strain BZ33rT, was isolated from soil of an industrial site. Cells stained Gram-negative and were aerobic and psychrophilic, showing good growth at 1–20 °C. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain BZ33rT was related to members of the genus Hymenobacter and had highest sequence similarity with Hymenobacter aerophilus DSM 13606T (97.5 %). The predominant cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0 (20.3 %), summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH; 20.2 %), iso-C15 : 0 (20.0 %), summed feature 4 (iso-C17 : 1 I and/or anteiso-C17 : 1 B; 8.2 %) and C16 : 1ω5c (7.9 %). Strain BZ33rT had MK-7 as the major menaquinone. The polyamine pattern contained sym-homospermidine as the major compound with moderate amounts of spermidine. Phosphatidylethanolamine, three unknown aminophospholipids, two unknown aminolipids, two unknown glycolipids and five unknown polar lipids were present in the polar lipid profile. The G+C content of the DNA was 61.6 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic characteristics, phylogenetic analysis and DNA–DNA relatedness data, strain BZ33rT is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Hymenobacter, for which the name Hymenobacter psychrophilus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is BZ33rT ( = DSM 22290T  = CGMCC 1.8975T  = LMG 25548T).

A Gram-stain-positive, aerobic, non-motile, psychrophilic bacterium, designated strain Cr6-08T, was isolated from alpine glacier cryoconite. Growth of strain Cr6-08T occurred at 1–25 °C. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain Cr6-08T is most closely related to members of the genus Arthrobacter. Strain Cr6-08T possessed chemotaxonomic properties consistent with those of the genus Arthrobacter, such as peptidoglycan type A3α (l-Lys–l-Ala4), MK-9(H2) as major menaquinone and anteiso- and iso-branched compounds (anteiso-C15 : 0 and iso-C15 : 0) as major cellular fatty acids. The polar lipid profile contained diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, one unknown glycolipid and three unknown polar lipids. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain Cr6-08T was 57.3 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic and chemotaxonomic characteristics, phylogenetic analysis and DNA–DNA relatedness data, strain Cr6-08T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Arthrobacter, for which the name Arthrobacter cryoconiti sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is Cr6-08T ( = DSM 23324T  = LMG 26052T  = CGMCC 1.10698T).

A Gram-reaction-negative, strictly aerobic, motile, rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain BZ78T, was isolated from soil from an industrial site. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain BZ78T belonged to the family Rhodospirillaceae and formed a coherent cluster with the type strain of Tistrella mobilis (98.3 % pairwise similarity). The predominant cellular fatty acids of strain BZ78T were C18 : 1ω7c (58.3 %), C19 : 0ω8c cyclo (11.5 %), C18 : 1 2-OH (10.9 %) and C14 : 0 3-OH (6.4 %). The predominant ubiquinone was Q-10. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain BZ78T was 65.8 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic characteristics, phylogenetic analysis and DNA–DNA relatedness data, strain BZ78T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Tistrella, for which the name Tistrella bauzanensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is BZ78T ( = DSM 22817T  = CGMCC 1.10188T  = LMG 26047T).

An antifungal bacterial strain, designated YC6258T, was isolated from the rhizosphere of a halophyte (Carex scabrifolia Steud.) growing in a tidal flat area of Namhae Island, Korea. Cells of the strain were Gram-stain-negative, facultatively anaerobic, moderately halophilic, rod-shaped and motile by a single polar flagellum. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain YC6258T formed a phyletic lineage distinct from members of the most closely related genera, Saccharospirillum and Reinekea, with less than 91.2 % sequence similarities. The major cellular fatty acids were C18 : 1ω7c, C16 : 0 and Summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c/ C16 : 1ω6c). The quinone system of strain YC6258T consisted mainly of ubiquinone Q-8. The polar lipid profile exhibited phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol and unknown lipids. The DNA G+C content was 48.9 mol%. Based on the phylogenetic and phenotypic characteristics, strain YC6258T should be classified as a representative of a novel species in a novel genus for which the name Gynuella sunshinyii gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is YC6258T (KCCM 43015T = NBRC 109345T).

A Gram-negative, aerobic, motile rod, designated BZ93T, was isolated from soil from an industrial site. The strain grew at 5–30 °C. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain BZ93T was related to members of the genus Pseudomonas and was related most closely to Pseudomonas xiamenensis C10-2T (97.8 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity) and Pseudomonas pertucinogena IFO 14163T (97.4 %). The predominant cellular fatty acids of strain BZ93T were C18 : 1ω7c (54.8 %), summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH; 10.3 %), C16 : 0 (9.9 %) and C17 : 0 cyclo (7.4 %). The major quinone was ubiquinone 9. The major phospholipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and an unknown phospholipid. The genomic DNA G+C content was 61.8 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic characteristics, phylogenetic analysis and DNA–DNA relatedness, a novel species, Pseudomonas bauzanensis sp. nov., is proposed. The type strain is BZ93T ( = DSM 22558T  = CGMCC 1.9095T = LMG 26048T).

Two Gram-positive, aerobic, spore-forming rods, F73T and I80T, were isolated from upland soil. A phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences placed both isolates within the genus Sporosarcina, and showed a sequence similarity of 98.9 % between the two strains and a similarity of approximately 94.6–97.3 % with respect to Sporosarcina species with validly published names. The values for DNA–DNA relatedness between the two isolates and related type strains of the genus Sporosarcina were below 28.0 %. For both strains, the major cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0 and iso-C15 : 0. In both cases, the cell-wall peptidoglycan was of the A4α type (l-Lys–d-Glu) and the major menaquinone was MK-7. Diaminopimelic acid was absent from both strains. The genomic DNA G+C contents of strains F73T and I80T were 46.5 and 44.5 mol%, respectively. On the basis of the phylogenetic analysis and physiological and chemotaxonomic data, the isolates represent two novel species of the genus Sporosarcina, for which the names Sporosarcina koreensis sp. nov. (type strain F73T =KACC 11299T =DSM 16921T) and Sporosarcina soli sp. nov. (type strain I80T =KACC 11300T =DSM 16920T) are proposed.

A Gram-negative, aerobic bacterium, designated strain BZ26T, was isolated from hydrocarbon-contaminated soil. The strain was psychrophilic, showing good growth over a temperature range of 1–20 °C. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain BZ26T was related to members of the genus Dyadobacter and had highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to Dyadobacter alkalitolerans 12116T (98.1 %), Dyadobacter koreensis KCTC 12537T (97.5 %) and Dyadobacter ginsengisoli Gsoil 043T (97.2 %). Strain BZ26T had MK-7 as the major menaquinone and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1 ω7c/iso-C15 : 0 2-OH), C16 : 1 ω5c and iso-C15 : 0 as major fatty acids. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain BZ26T was 48.9 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic characteristics and genotypic analysis, strain BZ26T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Dyadobacter, for which the name Dyadobacter psychrophilus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is BZ26T (=DSM 22270T =CGMCC 1.8951T).

A Gram-negative, rod-shaped, Flavobacterium-like bacterial strain, DS-20T, was isolated from soil from the island of Dokdo, Korea, and subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic study. Strain DS-20T grew optimally at pH 6.5–7.0 and 25 °C. It contained MK-6 as the predominant menaquinone and iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and iso-C17 : 1 ω9c as the major fatty acids. The DNA G+C content was 38.2 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain DS-20T belonged to the genus Flavobacterium. Levels of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between strain DS-20T and the type strains of recognized Flavobacterium species were below 94.9 %. Strain DS-20T differed from phylogenetically related Flavobacterium species in several phenotypic characteristics. On the basis of its phenotypic and phylogenetic distinctiveness, strain DS-20T was classified in the genus Flavobacterium as representing a novel species, for which the name Flavobacterium terrigena sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is DS-20T (=KCTC 12761T=DSM 17934T).

A non-motile and rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain 02SUJ3T, was isolated from freshwater collected from the Juam Reservoir (Republic of Korea). Cells were Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, oxidase-negative and catalase-positive. The major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 1 G and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH. The strain contained MK-7 as the major isoprenoid quinone. The main polar lipid was phosphatidylethanolamine. The DNA G+C content was 46.4 mol%. A phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain 02SUJ3T forms an independent lineage within the genus Flavisolibacter with low sequence similarity to Flavisolibacter ginsengiterrae Gsoil 492T and Flavisolibacter ginsengisoli Gsoil 643T (95.7 %). Phenotypic characteristics distinguished strain 02SUJ3T from members of the genus Flavisolibacter . On the basis of the evidence presented in this study, strain 02SUJ3T is considered to represent a novel species, for which the name Flavisolibacter rigui sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 02SUJ3T ( = JCM 17515T = KCTC 23328T). An emended description of the genus Flavisolibacter is also provided.

A Gram-negative, facultatively anaerobic, short-rod-shaped, non-motile and non-spore-forming bacterial strain, designated ABP-4T, was isolated from a freshwater spring in Taiwan and was characterized using the polyphasic taxonomy approach. Growth occurred at 20–40 °C (optimum, 30–37 °C), at pH 7.0–10.0 (optimum, pH 7.0–9.0) and with 0–3 % NaCl (optimum, 0 %). Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain ABP-4T, together with Aquabacterium fontiphilum CS-6T (96.4 % sequence similarity), Aquabacterium commune B8T (96.1 %), Aquabacterium citratiphilum B4T (95.5 %) and Aquabacterium parvum B6T (94.7 %), formed a deep line within the order Burkholderiales. Strain ABP-4T contained summed feature 3 (comprising C16 : 1 ω7c and/or C16 : 1 ω6c), C18 : 1 ω7c and C16 : 0 as predominant fatty acids. The major cellular hydroxy fatty acid was C10 : 0 3-OH. The major isoprenoid quinone was Q-8 and the DNA G+C content was 68.6 mol%. The polar lipid profile consisted of a mixture of phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylserine, diphosphatidylglycerol and several uncharacterized phospholipids. The DNA–DNA relatedness of strain ABP-4T with respect to recognized species of the genus Aquabacterium was less than 70 %. On the basis of the genotypic, chemotaxonomic and phenotypic data, strain ABP-4T represents a novel species in the genus Aquabacterium, for which the name Aquabacterium limnoticum sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is ABP-4T ( = BCRC 80167T = KCTC 23306T).

Four Gram-stain-positive, aerobic or facultatively anaerobic, motile, endospore-forming, rod-shaped bacteria, designated strains FeL05T, FeL11, Fek19 and Fek21, were isolated from seeds of hybrid rice (Oryza sativa L. Jinyou 611), and their taxonomic positions were determined using a polyphasic approach. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the four strains were members of the genus Paenibacillus. They showed 95.4 % sequence similarity or less with strains of other Paenibacillus species. The G+C content of strain FeL05T was found to be 53.3 mol%. Its predominant respiratory quinone was MK-7. The predominant cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0 (61.7 %), C16 : 0 (10.9 %), iso-C16 : 0 (7.0 %), anteiso-C17 : 0 (6.7 %) and iso-C15 : 0 (5.2 %). On the basis of its phenotypic properties and phylogenetic distinctiveness, strain FeL05T represents a novel species of the genus Paenibacillus, for which the name Paenibacillus hunanensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is strain FeL05T (=ACCC 10718T =CGMCC 1.8907T =DSM 22170T).
