A Gram-negative, aerobic bacterium, designated strain BZ26T, was isolated from hydrocarbon-contaminated soil. The strain was psychrophilic, showing good growth over a temperature range of 1–20 °C. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain BZ26T was related to members of the genus Dyadobacter and had highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to Dyadobacter alkalitolerans 12116T (98.1 %), Dyadobacter koreensis KCTC 12537T (97.5 %) and Dyadobacter ginsengisoli Gsoil 043T (97.2 %). Strain BZ26T had MK-7 as the major menaquinone and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1 ω7c/iso-C15 : 0 2-OH), C16 : 1 ω5c and iso-C15 : 0 as major fatty acids. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain BZ26T was 48.9 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic characteristics and genotypic analysis, strain BZ26T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Dyadobacter, for which the name Dyadobacter psychrophilus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is BZ26T (=DSM 22270T =CGMCC 1.8951T).

A Gram-negative, rod-shaped, Flavobacterium-like bacterial strain, DS-20T, was isolated from soil from the island of Dokdo, Korea, and subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic study. Strain DS-20T grew optimally at pH 6.5–7.0 and 25 °C. It contained MK-6 as the predominant menaquinone and iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and iso-C17 : 1 ω9c as the major fatty acids. The DNA G+C content was 38.2 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain DS-20T belonged to the genus Flavobacterium. Levels of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between strain DS-20T and the type strains of recognized Flavobacterium species were below 94.9 %. Strain DS-20T differed from phylogenetically related Flavobacterium species in several phenotypic characteristics. On the basis of its phenotypic and phylogenetic distinctiveness, strain DS-20T was classified in the genus Flavobacterium as representing a novel species, for which the name Flavobacterium terrigena sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is DS-20T (=KCTC 12761T=DSM 17934T).

A Gram-negative, rod-shaped, Brevundimonas-like bacterial strain, DS-18T, was isolated from soil in Dokdo, Korea, and its exact taxonomic position was investigated by using a polyphasic approach. Strain DS-18T grew optimally at pH 6.5–7.0 and 25 °C without NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain DS-18T belonged to the genus Brevundimonas. Strain DS-18T contained Q-10 as the predominant ubiquinone and C18 : 1 ω7c and C16 : 0 as the major fatty acids. The DNA G+C content was 68.7 mol%. Strain DS-18T exhibited levels of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of 96.3–98.7 % to the type strains of Brevundimonas species and Mycoplana bullata. Mean DNA–DNA relatedness values between strain DS-18T and the type strains of phylogenetically related Brevundimonas species and M. bullata were in the range 15–32 %. Strain DS-18T differed from Brevundimonas species and M. bullata in several phenotypic characteristics. On the basis of phenotypic, phylogenetic and genetic data, strain DS-18T represents a novel species of the genus Brevundimonas, for which the name Brevundimonas lenta sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is DS-18T (=KCTC 12871T =JCM 14602T).

A novel actinobacterium, designated strain NEAU-QY2T, was isolated from the leaves of Sonchus oleraceus L. specimen, collected from Wuchang, Heilongjiang Province, China. A polyphasic study was carried out to establish the taxonomic position of this strain. The organism formed single spores with rough surfaces on substrate mycelia. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain NEAU-QY2T belonged to the genus Plantactinospora and formed a monophyletic clade with its closest related strains Plantactinospora endophytica YIM 68255T (99.2 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity), Plantactinospora veratri NEAU-FHS4T (98.8 %) and Plantactinospora mayteni YIM 61359T (98.7 %), an association that was supported by a bootstrap value of 90 % in the neighbour-joining tree and also recovered with the maximum-likelihood algorithm. However, DNA–DNA hybridization values between strain NEAU-QY2T and the three closely related strains were below 70 %. With reference to phenotypic characteristics, phylogenetic data and DNA–DNA hybridization results, strain NEAU-QY2T was distinguished from closely related strains and is classified as representing a novel species of the genus Plantactinospora, for which the name Plantactinospora sonchi sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is NEAU-QY2T ( = CGMCC 4.7216T = JCM 30345T).

A rod-shaped, yellow and strictly aerobic marine bacterium, designated KYW382T, was isolated from seawater collected from the South Sea, Republic of Korea. Cells were Gram-negative and catalase- and oxidase-positive. The major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 1 G, iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH, iso-C15 : 0 3-OH and anteiso-C15 : 0. The DNA G+C content was 32.4 mol%. A phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain KYW382T constituted an evolutionary lineage within the radiation enclosing the members of the genus Gaetbulibacter. The closest neighbour was Gaetbulibacter saemankumensis SMK-12T (96.1 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity). A number of phenotypic characteristics distinguished strain KYW382T from the described members of the genus Gaetbulibacter. On the basis of the data presented in this study, strain KYW382T represents a novel species, for which the name Gaetbulibacter aestuarii sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is KYW382T ( = KCTC 23303T  = JCM 17455T). An emended description of the genus Gaetbulibacter is also given.

Seven recently cultured bacterial isolates, although similar in their 16S rRNA gene sequences to Roseburia intestinalis L1-82T (DSM 14610T), were not sufficiently related for inclusion within existing species, forming three separate clusters in a 16S rRNA gene phylogenetic tree. The isolates, which were obtained from human stools, were Gram-variable or Gram-negative, strictly anaerobic, slightly curved rods; cells from all strains measured approximately 0.5×1.5–5.0 μm and were motile. Two strains belonging to one cluster (A2-181 and A2-183T) were the only strains that were able to grow on glycerol and that failed to grow on any of the complex substrates tested (inulin, xylan and amylopectin). Strains belonging to a second cluster (represented by M6/1 and M72/1T) differed from the other isolates in their ability to grow on sorbitol. Isolates belonging to a third cluster (L1-83 and A2-194T) were the only strains that failed to grow on xylose and that gave good growth on inulin (strains M6/1 and M72/1T gave weak growth). All strains were net acetate utilizers. The DNA G+C contents of representative Roseburia strains A2-183T, A2-194T, M72/1T and R. intestinalis L1-82T were 47.4, 41.4, 42.0 and 42.6 mol%, respectively. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, three novel Roseburia species are proposed, with the names Roseburia hominis sp. nov. (type strain A2-183T=DSM 16839T=NCIMB 14029T), Roseburia inulinivorans sp. nov. (type strain A2-194T=DSM 16841T=NCIMB 14030T) and Roseburia faecis sp. nov. (type strain M72/1T=DSM 16840T=NCIMB 14031T).

An unidentified Gram-negative-staining, aerobic, rod-shaped, spore-forming bacterium was isolated from a sample of cerebrospinal fluid. Based on comparative analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences and phenotypic characteristics, the novel isolate was included in the Bacillus sphaericus-like group. The isolate was closely related to Bacillus odysseyi and Bacillus silvestris, with 96.2 and 94.4 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, respectively. The major fatty acid was iso-C15 : 0 (48 %). The name Bacillus massiliensis sp. nov. is proposed for the novel isolate, with strain 4400831T (=CIP 108446T=CCUG 49529T) as the type strain.

A non-motile, rod-shaped, red-pigmented bacterium, designated strain BZ33rT, was isolated from soil of an industrial site. Cells stained Gram-negative and were aerobic and psychrophilic, showing good growth at 1–20 °C. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain BZ33rT was related to members of the genus Hymenobacter and had highest sequence similarity with Hymenobacter aerophilus DSM 13606T (97.5 %). The predominant cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0 (20.3 %), summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH; 20.2 %), iso-C15 : 0 (20.0 %), summed feature 4 (iso-C17 : 1 I and/or anteiso-C17 : 1 B; 8.2 %) and C16 : 1ω5c (7.9 %). Strain BZ33rT had MK-7 as the major menaquinone. The polyamine pattern contained sym-homospermidine as the major compound with moderate amounts of spermidine. Phosphatidylethanolamine, three unknown aminophospholipids, two unknown aminolipids, two unknown glycolipids and five unknown polar lipids were present in the polar lipid profile. The G+C content of the DNA was 61.6 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic characteristics, phylogenetic analysis and DNA–DNA relatedness data, strain BZ33rT is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Hymenobacter, for which the name Hymenobacter psychrophilus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is BZ33rT ( = DSM 22290T  = CGMCC 1.8975T  = LMG 25548T).

A Gram-negative, rod-shaped, Brevundimonas-like bacterial strain, KSL-145T, was isolated from an alkaline soil in Korea and subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic investigation. Strain KSL-145T grew optimally at pH 7.5–8.0 and 30 °C without NaCl. It was characterized chemotaxonomically as containing Q-10 as the predominant ubiquinone and C18 : 1 ω7c and C16 : 0 as the major fatty acids. The DNA G+C content was 61.8 mol%. A phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain KSL-145T fell within the radiation of the cluster comprising Brevundimonas species and Mycoplana bullata. The levels of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between strain KSL-145T and the type strains of Brevundimonas species and M. bullata ranged from 95.3 to 98.7 %. The mean DNA–DNA relatedness values between strain KSL-145T and the type strains of Brevundimonas diminuta and M. bullata, the closest phylogenetic relatives, were 26 and 15 %, respectively. Strain KSL-145T could be differentiated from Brevundimonas species and M. bullata by differences in several phenotypic characteristics. On the basis of the phenotypic, phylogenetic and genetic data, strain KSL-145T represents a novel species in the genus Brevundimonas, for which the name Brevundimonas terrae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is KSL-145T (=KCTC 12481T=JCM 13476T).

A Gram-positive, rod- or coccoid-shaped bacterial strain, DS-17T, was isolated from a soil in Dokdo, Korea, and its taxonomic position was investigated by using a polyphasic approach. Strain DS-17T grew optimally at around pH 8.0 and 30 °C in the presence of 0.5–1.0 % (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain DS-17T belonged to the genus Nocardioides. The chemotaxonomic properties of strain DS-17T were consistent with those of the genus Nocardioides: the cell-wall peptidoglycan type was based on ll-2,6-diaminopimelic acid, MK-8(H4) was the predominant menaquinone and iso-C16 : 0, C17 : 1 ω8c and C17 : 0 were the major fatty acids. The DNA G+C content was 71.5 mol%. Strain DS-17T exhibited 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity values of 94.5–96.9 % to the type strains of recognized Nocardioides species. Strain DS-17T could be distinguished from recognized Nocardioides species by differences in phenotypic characteristics. On the basis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data, strain DS-17T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Nocardioides, for which the name Nocardioides terrigena sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is DS-17T (=KCTC 19217T=JCM 14582T).

A non-motile, rod-shaped, yellow bacterium, designated C16yT, was isolated from alpine glacier cryoconite. Cells behaved Gram-positively, were aerobic and psychrophilic (good growth at 1–25 °C). Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain C16yT was related to the genus Sphingomonas and had highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with Sphingomonas oligophenolica JCM 12082T (97.6 %) and Sphingomonas echinoides DSM 1805T (97.2 %). DNA–DNA hybridization demonstrated that strain C16yT could not be considered as a member of either Sphingomonas oligophenolica or Sphingomonas echinoides. Strain C16yT contained Q-10 as the predominant ubiquinone and C18 : 1 and C16 : 0 were the dominant fatty acids. The polar lipid profile contained phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, sphingoglycolipid, five unidentified glycolipids, two unidentified aminophospholipids and two unidentified lipids. The major polyamines were the triamines sym-homospermidine and spermidine. The G+C content was 67.9 mol%. Combined data from phenotypic, phylogenetic and DNA–DNA relatedness studies demonstrated that strain C16yT is a representative of a novel species of the genus Sphingomonas, for which we propose the name Sphingomonas glacialis sp. nov. The type strain is C16yT (=DSM 22294T =CGMCC 1.8957T =CIP 110131T).
