A pink-pigmented, Gram-negative, rod-shaped, motile, strictly aerobic bacterium, designated strain 311T, was isolated from desert sand in Xinjiang, China. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain 311T was related closely to Cesiribacter andamanensis AMV16T (94.6 % similarity). The DNA G+C content of strain 311T was 47.1 mol% and the major respiratory quinone was menaquinone 7 (MK-7). The main cellular fatty acids were C16 : 1ω5c (29.9 %), iso-C15 : 0 (21.9 %), iso-C17 : 0 3-OH (13.3 %) and summed feature 4 (iso-C17 : 1 I and/or anteiso-C17 : 1 B; 13.0 %). Based on phenotypic and chemotaxonomic data and phylogenetic analysis, strain 311T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Cesiribacter, for which the name Cesiribacter roseus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 311T ( = CCTCC AB 207142T  = KACC 15456T).

A Gram-negative, pink-pigmented, non-motile, strictly aerobic rod, designated CNU040T, was isolated from seawater from the coast of Jeju Island in Korea. The temperature, pH and NaCl ranges for growth were 4–30 °C, pH 5.5–10.0 and 0–5.0 % NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain CNU040T belonged to a distinct lineage in the genus Algoriphagus and exhibited high sequence similarity with Algoriphagus terrigena DS-44T (98.3 %) and Algoriphagus alkaliphilus AC-74T (96.6 %) and lower sequence similarity (<96.0 %) with all other members of the genus Algoriphagus. DNA–DNA relatedness between strain CNU040T and A. terrigena KCTC 12545T was 44.5 %. The DNA G+C content of the isolate was 48.5 mol% and the major respiratory quinone was menaquinone-7. The major cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 (28.6 %) and summed feature 3 (consisting of iso-C15 : 0 2-OH and/or C16 : 1ω7c; 24.0 %). The polar lipids consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, one unknown amino lipid, one unknown aminophospholipid and three unknown polar lipids. On the basis of phenotypic, phylogenetic and genotypic data, strain CNU040T represents a novel species within the genus Algoriphagus, for which the name Algoriphagus jejuensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CNU040T ( = KCTC 22647T  = JCM 16112T).

A novel Gram-staining-negative, moderately halophilic and strictly aerobic bacterium, designated strain 112T, was isolated from a tidal flat at Taean, Korea. Cells were catalase- and oxidase-positive ovoids to rods and did not produce bacteriochlorophyll a. Optimum growth of strain 112T was observed at 30 °C, at pH 6.5–7.5 and in the presence of 2–4 % (w/v) NaCl. The major cellular fatty acids were summed feature 8 (C18 : 1ω7c and/or C18 : 1ω6c) and C16 : 0 and Q-10 was detected as the predominant ubiquinone. The major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, an unidentified aminolipid and three unidentified lipids. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain 112T was 58.2 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain 112T formed a phyletic lineage within the genus Roseovarius of the class Alphaproteobacteria . Strain 112T was most closely related to Roseovarius mucosus DFL-24T, with 96.52 % similarity. On the basis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and molecular properties, strain 112T represents a novel species of the genus Roseovarius , for which the name Roseovarius lutimaris sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 112T ( = KACC 16185T = JCM 17743T).

Bacterial strain V2M44T was isolated from forest soil from the Changbai Mountains, Heilongjiang Province, China. Cells of strain V2M44T were Gram-negative, rod-shaped and 0.3–0.4 μm in diameter and 1.5–2.5 μm long. The cells were strictly aerobic and were motile by means of peritrichous flagella. Growth occurred at 20–33 °C (optimum, 29–31 °C), at pH 5–8 (optimum, pH 6.0–7.0) and in the presence of 0−0.1 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 0.05 %). Strain V2M44T contained C17 : 1 ω6c (38.9 %) and summed feature 7 (comprising C18 : 1 ω7c, C18 : 1 ω9t and/or C18 : 1 ω12t, 31.5 %) as the major cellular fatty acids and Q-10 as the major respiratory quinone. The major polar lipids were sphingoglycolipid, phosphatidylmonomethylethanolamine, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol and diphosphatidylglycerol along with two unidentified phospholipids and four unidentified glycolipids. The major component in the polyamine pattern was sym-homospermidine. The DNA G+C content was 65.8 mol%. Analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain V2M44T was phylogenetically related to members of the genus Sphingomonas, with sequence similarities ranging from 92.0–95.8 %. Based on these results, it is concluded that strain V2M44T represents a novel species of the genus Sphingomonas, for which the name Sphingomonas changbaiensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is V2M44T (=CGMCC 1.7057T=NBRC 104936T).

A Gram-negative, rod-shaped, non-motile, strictly aerobic bacterium, strain S3-63T, was isolated from desert sand of Xinjiang, China. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain S3-63T had highest similarity to type strains of the genus Altererythrobacter, i.e. Altererythrobacter marinus H32T (97.2 % similarity), Altererythrobacter marensis MSW-14T (95.9 %), Altererythrobacter aestuarii KCTC 22735T (95.5 %), Altererythrobacter epoxidivorans JCS350T (95.1 %), Altererythrobacter namhicola KCTC 22736T (95.1 %), Altererythrobacter luteolus SW-109T (95.0 %) and Altererythrobacter indicus LMG 23789T (93.5 %). Growth occurred at 20–37 °C (optimum 30 °C), at pH 7.0–9.0 (optimum pH 8.0) and in 0–3 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum 1 %). The major respiratory quinone was ubiquinone-10 and the predominant cellular fatty acids were C18 : 1ω7c (50.8 %), summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c; 12.6 %), C16 : 0 (12.3 %), C14 : 0 2-OH (7.3 %) and C17 : 1ω6c (4.5 %). The DNA G+C content was 64.6 mol%. Therefore, the phylogenetic, physiological and chemotaxonomic data demonstrated that strain S3-63T represents a novel species of the genus Altererythrobacter, for which the name Altererythrobacter xinjiangensis sp. nov. is proposed; the type strain is S3-63T ( = CCTCC AB 207166T = CIP 110125T). An emended description of the genus Altererythrobacter is provided.

A Gram-negative, motile, oxidase- and catalase-positive and facultatively aerobic bacterium, designated S3-22T, was isolated from marine sediment of the Nella Fjord, Antarctica. Strain S3-22T reduced nitrate to nitrite and grew at pH 6.0–8.0, at 4–25 °C and with 0.5–5 % (w/v) NaCl. It contained Q-8 as the only respiratory quinone and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1 ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH), C16 : 0 and C18 : 1 ω7c as the major cellular fatty acids. The genomic DNA G+C content was 45.6 mol%. Phylogenetic analyses of 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain S3-22T was affiliated with the genus Neptunomonas, with 97.1 % sequence similarity to Neptunomonas japonica JAMM 0745T and 94.8 % to Neptunomonas naphthovorans NAG-2N-126T, the type strains of the only two recognized Neptunomonas species. DNA–DNA relatedness between strain S3-22T and N. japonica JCM 14595T was 20.4 %. Strain S3-22T could be distinguished from the type strains of Neptunomonas species by several phenotypic properties. Based on the evidence from our polyphasic study, strain S3-22T represents a novel Neptunomonas species, for which the name Neptunomonas antarctica sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is S3-22T (=CCTCC AB 209086T =KACC 14056T).

A Gram-stain-positive, rod-shaped, endospore-forming, aerobic bacterium (FJAT-14571T) was isolated from a soil sample in Taiwan. Strain FJAT-14571T grew at 20–40 °C (optimum 35 °C), pH 6–10 (optimum pH 8) and 0–2 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum 0 %). Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain FJAT-14571T was a member of the genus Bacillus and was most closely related to Bacillus oceanisediminis DSM 24771T (96.2 %). DNA–DNA relatedness between strain FJAT-14571T and B. oceanisediminis DSM 24771T was low (32.0 % ± 0.88 %). The diagnostic diamino acid of the peptidoglycan of strain FJAT-14571T was meso-diaminopimelic acid and the predominant menaquinone was MK-7 (96.6 %). The major cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 (46.4 %), anteiso-C15 : 0 (7.6 %), iso-C17 : 0 (8.2 %) and iso-C16 : 0 (10.0 %) and the DNA G+C content was 40.8 mol%. Phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and genotypic properties clearly indicated that strain FJAT-14571T represents a novel species within the genus Bacillus, for which the name Bacillus taiwanensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is FJAT-14571T ( = DSM 27845T = CGMCC1.1 2698T).

A Gram-stain-positive, aerobic, non-motile, psychrophilic bacterium, designated strain Cr6-08T, was isolated from alpine glacier cryoconite. Growth of strain Cr6-08T occurred at 1–25 °C. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain Cr6-08T is most closely related to members of the genus Arthrobacter. Strain Cr6-08T possessed chemotaxonomic properties consistent with those of the genus Arthrobacter, such as peptidoglycan type A3α (l-Lys–l-Ala4), MK-9(H2) as major menaquinone and anteiso- and iso-branched compounds (anteiso-C15 : 0 and iso-C15 : 0) as major cellular fatty acids. The polar lipid profile contained diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, one unknown glycolipid and three unknown polar lipids. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain Cr6-08T was 57.3 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic and chemotaxonomic characteristics, phylogenetic analysis and DNA–DNA relatedness data, strain Cr6-08T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Arthrobacter, for which the name Arthrobacter cryoconiti sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is Cr6-08T ( = DSM 23324T  = LMG 26052T  = CGMCC 1.10698T).

A Gram-stain-negative, non-motile and aerobic bacterium, designated CF17T, was isolated from coastal planktonic seaweeds, East China Sea. The isolate grew at 18–37 °C (optimum 25–28 °C), pH 6.5–9.0 (optimum 7.0–8.0) and with 0–5 % NaCl (optimum 1–2 %, w/v) and 0.5–10 % sea salts (optimum 2–3 %, w/v). Growth of strain CF17T could be stimulated prominently by supplementing the growth medium with the autoclaved supernatant of a culture of strain CF5, which was isolated from the same sample along with strain CF17T. The cell morphology of strain CF17T was a bean-shaped rod consisting of a swollen end and a long prostheca. The phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain CF17T clustered with Gemmobacter nectariphilus DSM 15620T within the genus Gemmobacter . The DNA G+C content of strain CF17T was 61.4 mol%. The respiratory quinone was ubiquinone Q-10. The major fatty acids included C18 : 1ω7c and C18 : 0. The polar lipids of strain CF17T consisted of phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, two uncharacterized phospholipids, one uncharacterized aminolipid, three uncharacterized glycolipids and one uncharacterized lipid. On the basis of phenotypic, phylogenetic and chemotaxonomic data, strain CF17T ( = CGMCC 1.11024T = JCM 18498T) is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Gemmobacter , for which the name Gemmobacter megaterium sp. nov. is proposed.

A Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain YC7378T was isolated from vermicompost (VC) collected at Masan, Korea, and its taxonomic position was investigated by using a polyphasic approach. Strain YC7378T grew optimally at 30 °C and at pH 6.5–8.5. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain YC7378T belongs to the genus Sphingosinicella in the family Sphingomonadaceae. The most closely related strains are Sphingosinicella soli KSL-125T (95.7 %), Sphingosinicella xenopeptidilytica 3-2W4T (95.6 %) and Sphingosinicella microcystinivorans Y2T (95.5 %). Strain YC7378T contained ubiquinone Q-10 as the major respiratory quinone system and sym-homospermidine as the major polyamine. The major fatty acids of strain YC7378T were C18 : 1 ω7c, C16 : 1 ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH, C14 : 0 2-OH and C16 : 0. The major polar lipids were sphingoglycolipid, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylethanolamine. The total DNA G+C content was 59.4 mol%. The phenotypic, phylogenetic and chemotaxonomic data showed that strain YC7378T represents a novel species of the genus Sphingosinicella, for which the name Sphingosinicella vermicomposti sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is YC7378T (=KCTC 22446T =DSM 21593T).

A Gram-stain-negative, non-motile bacterial strain designated 1NM-4T was isolated from an abandoned lead–zinc ore mine site in Mei County, Meizhou, Guangdong Province, southern China. The isolate was light yellow, strictly aerobic, oxidase-negative and catalase-positive. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA, rpoB and gyrB gene sequences, together with DNA–DNA hybridization values less than 70 %, revealed that strain 1NM-4T belongs to the genus Acinetobacter and may represent a novel species. The major respiratory quinone was ubiquinone 9 (Q-9) and the major cellular fatty acids consisted of C18 : 1ω9c, summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c), C16 : 0 and C12 : 0. The major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, an unidentified aminolipid and two unidentified phospholipids. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain 1NM-4T was 47.17±0.02 mol%. Based on phenotypic, phylogenetic and chemotaxonomic characteristics, strain 1NM-4T should be assigned to a novel species of the genus Acinetobacter , for which the name Acinetobacter guangdongensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 1NM-4T ( = GIMCC 1.656T = CCTCC AB 2014199T = KCTC 42012T).
