A Gram-staining-negative, strictly aerobic and rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain CNURIC013T, was isolated from seawater collected on the coast of Jeju Island, South Korea. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain CNURIC013T belonged to the genus Tenacibaculum, within the family Flavobacteriaceae. Sequence similarities between the novel strain and the type strains of recognized species of the genus Tenacibaculum were 93.6–96.0 %, the highest value being with Tenacibaculum litopenaei B-IT (96 %). The DNA G+C content of the novel strain was 34.5 mol% and the major respiratory quinone was menaquinone-6. The major fatty acids were summed feature 3 (comprising C16 : 1ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH; 26.0 %), iso-C15 : 0 (24.4 %), iso-C15 : 1 G (18.5 %) and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH (8.1 %). The polar lipids consisted of phosphatidylethanolamine, one unknown aminophospholipid and nine unknown polar lipids. On the basis of the phenotypic, phylogenetic and genotypic data, strain CNURIC013T represents a novel species within the genus Tenacibaculum, for which the name Tenacibaculum jejuense sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CNURIC013T ( = KCTC 22618T = JCM 15975T).

A strictly aerobic, Gram-staining-negative, oxidase- and catalase-positive, non-motile, rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain 5416T-29T, was isolated from air and was characterized by using a polyphasic approach. Colonies were reddish pink and circular with entire margins. Flexirubin-type pigments were absent. The strain formed a distinct phylogenetic lineage within the family Cytophagaceae of the phylum Bacteroidetes. Strain 5416T-29T did not show more than 88 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to the type strain of any recognized species. The major cellular fatty acids were C16 : 1 ω5c, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and iso-C15 : 0. The polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, one unknown amino lipid and several unknown polar lipids. Menaquinone-7 (MK-7) was the major respiratory quinone. The G+C content of the DNA of strain 5416T-29T was 45.5 mol%. Results of phenotypic and phylogenetic analyses clearly indicate that strain 5416T-29T represents a novel species of a new genus in the family Cytophagaceae, for which the name Rhodocytophaga aerolata gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Rhodocytophaga aerolata is 5416T-29T (=KACC 12507T =DSM 22190T).

A yellow-pigmented, Gram-staining-negative, non-motile, strictly aerobic and rod-shaped bacterium, designated CS100T, was isolated from soil in Chungbuk, Korea. Phylogenetic analysis and comparative studies based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that strain CS100T belonged to the genus Flavobacterium in the family Flavobacteriaceae. Strain CS100T showed the highest sequence similarities to Flavobacterium glaciei JCM 13953T (97.6 %) and Flavobacterium johnsoniae KACC 11410T (97.1 %). Sequence similarity to other members of the genus Flavobacterium was 91.5–97.0 %. Growth occurred at 4–30 °C, at pH 5.0–9.0 and in the presence of 0–2 % (w/v) NaCl. Flexirubin-type pigments were produced. Menaquinone-6 (MK-6) was the major respiratory quinone and the major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 (17.3 %), summed feature 3 (comprising iso-C15 : 0 2-OH and/or C16 : 1ω7c, 15.5 %) and C16 : 0 (11.8 %). The DNA G+C content was 36.4 mol%. Strain CS100T hydrolysed skimmed milk and gelatin, but not chitin or pectin, and showed oxidase and catalase activities. DNA–DNA relatedness was 3.0 % with F. glaciei JCM 13953T and 11.5 % with F. johnsoniae KACC 11410T. On the basis of the evidence from this study, strain CS100T represents a novel species of the genus Flavobacterium, for which the name Flavobacterium chungbukense sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CS100T ( = KACC 15048T = JCM 17386T).

The taxonomic position of three bacterial strains, Asr22-19T, NBRC 101035 and NBRC 101041, isolated from shellfish in Japan, was determined by using a polyphasic taxonomic approach. The strains were facultatively anaerobic, motile by gliding and Gram-staining-negative slender rods. Their major respiratory quinone was menaquinone-7 and their predominant cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH, iso-C15 : 0 3-OH, C16 : 0 3-OH, and C16 : 0. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 42.0–42.7 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the strains clustered with the genus Persicobacter in the family ‘Flammeovirgaceae’. DNA–DNA relatedness values were higher than 68 % among strains Asr22-19T, NBRC 101035 and NBRC 101041, and were lower than 28 % between strain Asr22-19T and Persicobacter diffluens NBRC 15940T. The three novel strains could be differentiated from Persicobacter diffluens by several phenotypic characteristics. On the basis of these results, the novel species Persicobacter psychrovividus sp. nov. (type strain Asr22-19T=NBRC 101262T=CIP 109100T) is proposed and emended descriptions are given for the genus Persicobacter and for Persicobacter diffluens.

A non-motile, Gram-staining negative, catalase- and oxidase-positive, crescent-rod shaped bacterium, designated strain CUG 91308T, was isolated from a sediment sample of Qinghai Lake, Qinghai Province, China. Colonies on OSM agar were round, smooth, flat and pinkish-orange in colour. Strain CUG 91308T could grow at 15–37 °C, pH 6–12 and in the presence of up to 7.0 % NaCl (w/v). Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain CUG 91308T belonged to the family Cyclobacteriaceae and formed a clade with the genus Lunatimonas in the phylogenetic tree, but separated from any species of the known genera within the family. The genomic DNA G+C content is about 42.1 %. The predominant fatty acids (>10 %) were iso-C15 : 0 (21.1 %), summed feature 3 (C16 : 1  ω7c / C16 : 1  ω6c / iso-C15 : 0 2OH) (14.3 %), iso-C17 : 0 3OH (12.3 %) and summed feature 9 (iso-C17 : 1  ω9c / C16 : 0 10-methyl) (10.6 %). The polar lipids of strain CUG 91308T were phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) and four unidentified polar lipids. Strain CUG 91308T contained MK-7 as the major respiratory quinone. On the basis of phenotypic, genotypic and phylogenetic data, strain CUG 91308T represents a novel species of a novel genus in the family Cyclobacteriaceae , for which the name Lunatibacter salilacus gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of the proposed new isolate is CUG 91308T (=KCTC 62636T=CGMCC 1.13593T).

A myxobacterial strain, designated SYR-2T, was obtained from a mud sample from an estuarine marsh alongside the Yoshino River, Shikoku, Japan. It had rod-shaped vegetative cells and formed bacteriolytic enlarging colonies or so-called ‘swarms’ in the agar media. Fruiting-body-like globular to polyhedral cell aggregates and myxospore-like spherical to ellipsoidal cells within them were observed. Those features coincided with the general characteristics of myxobacteria. The strain was mesophilic and strictly aerobic. Growth of SYR-2T was observed at 18–40 °C (optimum, 30–35 °C), pH 5.5–8.3 (optimum, pH 7.0–7.5) and with 0.0–2.5 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 0.2–1.0 %). Both Mg2+ and Ca2+ were essential cations for the growth. The predominant fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 (43.8 %), iso-C17 : 0 (22.4 %) and iso-C16 : 0 (9.6 %). A C20 : 4 fatty acid [arachidonic acid (4.3 %)], iso-C19 : 0 (1.5 %) and anteiso-acids [ai-C15 : 0 (0.5 %), ai-C17 : 0 (0.3 %)] were also detected. The G+C content of the DNA was 69.7 mol%. The strain contained menaquinone-7 (MK-7) as the major respiratory quinone. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain SYR-2T belonged to the suborder Nannocystineae , order Myxococcales in the class Deltaproteobacteria , and the strain was most closely related to two type strains of marine myxobacteria, Enhygromyxa salina SHK-1T and Plesiocystis pacifica SIR-1T, with 96.5 % and 96.0 % similarities, respectively. These characteristics determined in this polyphasic study suggested that strain SYR-2T represents a novel species in a new genus of myxobacteria. The name Pseudenhygromyxa salsuginis gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed to accommodate this isolate, and the type strain of Pseudenhygromyxa salsuginis is SYR-2T ( = NBRC 104351T = DSM 21377T).

A Gram-staining-negative, yellow-pigmented, non-motile, strictly aerobic, rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain CNU001T, was isolated from seawater collected on the coast of Jeju Island, South Korea, and subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic study. The temperature, pH and NaCl ranges for growth were 10–30 °C, pH 6.0–10.0 and 2.0–5.0 %, respectively. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain CNU001T belonged to the genus Erythrobacter in the family Erythrobacteraceae , with Erythrobacter longus DSM 6997T (96.6 % sequence similarity), Erythrobacter gaetbuli SW-161T (96.3 %), Erythrobacter vulgaris 022 2-10T (96.2 %), Erythrobacter nanhaisediminis T30T (96.1 %) and other members of the genus Erythrobacter (<96.0 %) identified as the novel strain’s closest relatives. The major cellular fatty acids were C18 : 1ω7c and C17 : 1ω6c. The polar lipids were found to be diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylglycerol, one sphingoglycolipid, one unidentified aminolipid and six other unidentified lipids. The major respiratory quinone was ubiquinone-10 (UQ-10) and the genomic DNA G+C content of the novel strain was 58.9 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic, phylogenetic and genotypic data, strain CNU001T represents a novel species within the genus Erythrobacter , for which the name Erythrobacter jejuensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CNU001T ( = KCTC 23090T  = JCM 16677T).

A novel Gram-negative, orange-pigmented, rod-shaped, strictly aerobic, gliding, oxidase- and catalase-positive bacterial strain, A73T, was isolated from seawater collected off Jeju, South Korea. 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between A73T and type strains of Winogradskyella species with validly published names ranged from 94.1 to 96.2 %. The dominant fatty acids of strain A73T were iso-C15 : 1 G (19.1 %), iso-C15 : 0 (13.3 %), iso-C17 : 0 3-OH (10.0 %) and iso-C15 : 0 3-OH (7.2 %). The DNA G+C content of strain A73T was 36.0 mol% and its major respiratory quinone was MK-6. On the basis of combined data from phenotypic and phylogenetic analyses, strain A73T represents a novel species of the genus Winogradskyella, for which the name Winogradskyella lutea sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is A73T ( = KCTC 23237T  = DSM 22624T). An emended description of the genus Winogradskyella is also provided.

A novel, Gram-staining-negative, yellow-coloured, rod-shaped, obligately aerobic, non-motile bacterium, designated strain AK7T, was isolated from seawater collected on the coast at Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, India. The predominant fatty acids of the novel strain were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 0 3-OH, C16 : 1ω5c, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and summed features 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH) and 4 (iso-C17 : 1 I and/or anteiso-C17 : 1 B). The major respiratory quinone was MK-7 and the polar lipid profile comprised phosphatidylethanolamine, two unidentified aminolipids and four other unidentified lipids. In phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences, strain AK7T appeared most closely related to Fulvivirga kasyanovii KMM 6220T (95.9 % sequence similarity), a member of the family Flammeovirgaceae in the phylum Bacteroidetes . The genomic DNA G+C content of strain AK7T was 55.1 mol%. Based on the morphological, biochemical, physiological, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic evidence, strain AK7T represents a novel species of the genus Fulvivirga for which the name Fulvivirga imtechensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is AK7T ( = MTCC 11053T  = JCM 17390T).

A novel Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped, non-flagellated, strictly aerobic strain with gliding motility, designated XH134T, was isolated from surface seawater of the South Pacific Gyre (45° 58′ S 163° 11′ W) during the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Expedition 329. The major respiratory quinone of strain XH134T was MK-6. The dominant fatty acids of strain XH134T were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 1 G, C16 : 1ω6c and/or C16 : 1ω7c, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH, iso-C15 : 0 3-OH and 10-methyl C16 : 0 and/or iso-C17 : 1ω9c. The polar lipids of strain XH134T comprised phosphatidylethanolamine, one unknown aminolipid and three unknown polar lipids. The DNA G+C content of strain XH134T was 32.4 mol%. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the novel strain was related most closely to Aquimarina macrocephali JAMB N27T with 96.9 % sequence similarity. A number of phenotypic characteristics distinguished strain XH134T from described members of the genus Aquimarina . On the basis of combined phenotypic and phylogenetic analyses, strain XH134T represents a novel species of the genus Aquimarina , for which the name Aquimarina megaterium sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is XH134T ( = CGMCC 1.12186T = JCM 18215T).

A Gram-staining-negative, non-motile, yellow-coloured, rod-shaped bacterium, designated S44T, was isolated from bankside soil of Xixi wetland, located in Zhejiang province, China. Growth of strain S44T was observed at 6–37 °C (optimum, 28 °C) and at pH 6.0–9.0 (optimum, 7.0). No growth occurred in the presence of >2 % (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain S44T represented a member of the genus Flavobacterium , showing the highest sequence similarities to the sequences from Flavobacterium succinicans DSM 4002T (96.9 %), Flavobacterium reichenbachii WB 3.2-61T (96.6 %) and Flavobacterium glycines NCBI 105008T (96.5 %). The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 33.6 mol%. The predominant cellular fatty acids were C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 0 and summed feature 3 (comprising C16 : 1ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH), and the major respiratory quinone was menaquinone 6 (MK-6). The major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, two unknown aminolipids, two unknown aminophospholipids and four unknown polar lipids. On the basis of the phenotypic and genotypic data, it is proposed that the isolate S44T be classified as representing a novel species of the genus Flavobacterium , for which the name Flavobacterium palustre sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is S44T ( = CGMCC 1.12811T = NBRC 110389T).
