A novel Gram-negative strain, designated M-SX103T, was isolated from a fresh leaf of Nicotiana tabacum Linn. collected at Yuxi City, Yunnan province, China, and subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic study. Growth occurred at 10–40 °C, at pH 6.0–9.0 and with 0–3 % (w/v) NaCl. The predominant isoprenoid quinone was MK-7. The major cellular fatty acids of strain M-SX103T were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c). The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 40.6 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the isolate belongs to the genus Sphingobacterium , sharing 95.4–89.7 % sequence similarity with type strains of members of the genus Sphingobacterium ; it was most closely related to Sphingobacterium composti T5-12T. On the basis of the taxonomic evidence, a novel species, Sphingobacterium nematocida sp. nov., is proposed. The type strain is M-SX103T ( = JCM 17339T = CCTCC AB 2010390T).

An orange, rod-shaped, Gram-reaction-negative, aerobic and gliding bacterial strain devoid of flagella, designated strain KYW614T, was isolated from seawater collected from Gwangyang Bay, Republic of Korea. Zeaxanthin was the major carotenoid pigment produced and flexirubin-type pigments were not produced. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain KYW614T belonged to the family Flavobacteriaceae and it was most closely related to Mesoflavibacter zeaxanthinifaciens TD-ZX30T (96.5 %, sequence similarity). The predominant cellular fatty acids of strain KYW614T were iso-C15 : 1 G (10.5 %), summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c/C16 : 1ω6c; 10.0 %), iso-C15 : 0 (9.5 %), C15 : 0 (7.5 %) and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH (7.4 %). MK-6 was the only isoprenoid quinone and the DNA G+C content was 32.6 mol%. Data from a polyphasic taxonomic study suggested that the isolate represents a novel species in the genus Mesoflavibacter , for which the name Mesoflavibacter aestuarii sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is KYW614T ( = KCTC 32269T = JCM 19524T).

An alkaliphilic and moderately halophilic actinobacterium, designated strain GP10-3T, was isolated from Populus euphratica collected from the southern edge of Taklimakan desert, Xinjiang, China. Cells of this strain were Gram-stain-positive, non-motile and non-spore-forming short rods. Strain GP10-3T grew optimally at 37 °C on LB agar media in the presence of 5–10 % (w/v) NaCl at pH 9.0. The menaquinones were MK-7, MK-8 and MK-9. The major fatty acids (>10 %) were anteiso-C17 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0. The peptidoglycan type was variation A4α, l-Lys-l-Glu. The polar lipids consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycolipid, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylinositol, glycolipid and an unidentified phospholipid. The DNA G+C content was 67.4 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that strain GP10-3T belonged to the genus Nesterenkonia , sharing 94.6–96.9 % sequence similarity with the type strains of species within this genus with validly published names. Based on the evidence of the polyphasic taxonomic study, strain GP10-3T represents a novel species of the genus Nesterenkonia , for which the name Nesterenkonia populi sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is GP10-3T ( = DSM 27959T = KCTC 29119T).

A Gram-negative, motile, rod-shaped bacterial strain, designated Ad2T, was isolated from a marine sponge, Axinella dissimilis, which was collected from a semi-enclosed marine lake in Ireland. Strain Ad2T grew optimally at 24 °C, at pH 7.0 and in the presence of 3 % (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain Ad2T clustered with members of the genus Pseudovibrio , and showed 97.3–98.2 % sequence similarity to the type strains of recognized Pseudovibrio species. DNA–DNA relatedness values between strain Ad2T and the type strains of other Pseudovibrio species were <27 %. The DNA G+C content of strain Ad2T was 50.5 mol%. The major fatty acid was 18 : 1ω7c. Differences in phenotypic properties, together with phylogenetic and DNA–DNA hybridization analyses, indicated that strain Ad2T represented a novel species of the genus Pseudovibrio . The name Pseudovibrio axinellae sp. nov. is proposed, with Ad2T ( = DSM 24994T = NCIMB 14761T) as the type strain.

A non-motile and rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain 02SUJ3T, was isolated from freshwater collected from the Juam Reservoir (Republic of Korea). Cells were Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, oxidase-negative and catalase-positive. The major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 1 G and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH. The strain contained MK-7 as the major isoprenoid quinone. The main polar lipid was phosphatidylethanolamine. The DNA G+C content was 46.4 mol%. A phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain 02SUJ3T forms an independent lineage within the genus Flavisolibacter with low sequence similarity to Flavisolibacter ginsengiterrae Gsoil 492T and Flavisolibacter ginsengisoli Gsoil 643T (95.7 %). Phenotypic characteristics distinguished strain 02SUJ3T from members of the genus Flavisolibacter . On the basis of the evidence presented in this study, strain 02SUJ3T is considered to represent a novel species, for which the name Flavisolibacter rigui sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 02SUJ3T ( = JCM 17515T = KCTC 23328T). An emended description of the genus Flavisolibacter is also provided.

A Gram-staining-negative, rod-shaped bacterium, strain HMD2169T, was isolated from a mesotrophic artificial lake in Korea. Strain HMD2169T grew in the presence of 0–3.0 % (w/v) NaCl, at pH 5–10 and at 20–37 °C. The predominant quinone of strain HMD2169T was ubiquinone (UQ)-8. The major fatty acids were summed feature 3 (comprising C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c), C16 : 0 and summed feature 8 (comprising C18 : 1ω7c and/or C18 : 1ω6c). The major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, diphosphatidylglycerol, two unidentified aminolipids and two unidentified lipids. The DNA G+C content was 59.8 mol%. A phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain HMD2169T was a representative of a lineage within the genus Chitinimonas . Strain HMD2169T was closely related to Chitinimonas taiwanensis (95.8 % sequence similarity) and Chitinimonas koreensis (94.6 %). On the basis of the evidence presented in this study, strain HMD2169T is a representative of a novel species of the genus Chitinimonas , for which the name Chitinimonas viridis sp. nov. is proposed with the type strain HMD2169T ( = KCTC 22839T = CECT 7703T).

A novel actinobacterial strain, A4029T, isolated from arid soil of Abuja, Nigeria, and provisionally assigned to the genus Actinoplanes , was subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic study. 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity studies showed that strain A4029T belonged to the genus Actinoplanes , being most closely related to Actinoplanes brasiliensis DSM 43805T (98.9 %) and Actinoplanes deccanensis DSM 43806T (98.0 %); similarity to other type strains of the genus Actinoplanes ranged from 96.2 to 97.9 %. Chemotaxonomic data [major menaquinone MK-9(H4); major polar lipids phosphatidylethanolamine, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylinositol; characteristic sugars arabinose and xylose; major fatty acids iso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C16 : 0, C17 : 1ω9c and iso-C14 : 0] confirmed the affiliation of strain A4029T to the genus Actinoplanes . The results of DNA–DNA hybridizations and phylogenetic analysis, together with phenotypic and biochemical test data, allowed strain A4029T to be differentiated from strains of other Actinoplanes species. Therefore, strain A4029T represents a novel species, for which the name Actinoplanes abujensis sp. nov. is proposed, with A4029T ( = DSM 45518T = NRRL B-24835T = KCTC 19984T) as the type strain.

A bacterial strain, designated NS31-3T, was isolated from the wastewater of a paper mill. Cells of the isolate were obligately anaerobic, non-pigmented, non-motile, Gram-negative, short rods (0.7–1.0×1.4–2.5 µm). The isolate was able to grow on media containing 20 % bile salts. API 20A tests showed that acid was produced from glucose, lactose, sucrose, maltose, d-xylose, l-arabinose, cellobiose, d-mannose, d-melezitose, d-raffinose, d-trehalose, d-mannitol, salicin and d-sorbitol. The main fermentation products from PYG broth were lactic acid, propionic acid, formic acid and acetic acid. Chemotaxonomic analysis showed that the major fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0, C15 : 0 and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and the predominant respiratory quinones were MK-9 and MK-10. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain NS31-3T was related to members of genus Parabacteroides (91.2–93.2 % sequence similarity); the isolate had the closest affinity with Parabacteroides merdae JCM 9497T. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 37.2 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic analysis, strain NS31-3T represents a novel species of the genus Parabacteroides , for which the name Parabacteroides chartae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is NS31-3T ( = JCM 17797T  = DSM 24967T).

A Gram-stain-negative, non-motile, red bacterium, designated DCY57T, was isolated from soil of a ginseng field in a mountainous region of Chungnam province in South Korea. Strain DCY57T grew with 0–1 % (w/v) NaCl and the optimum temperature for growth was 30 °C. Strain DCY57T contained MK-7 as the predominant menaquinone. The polyamine was sym-homospermidine. The major fatty acids were C16:1ω5c, iso-C15:0, anteiso-C15:0 and summed feature 3 (containing C16:1ω7c and/or C16:1ω6c). The major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, unknown aminophospholipids, unknown aminolipids and unknown lipids. The DNA G+C content was 58.9 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain DCY57T was most closely related to members of the genus Hymenobacter . The isolate exhibited 91.7 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with H. soli PB17T, 94.5 % with H. flocculans A2-50AT and 95.8 % with H. metalli A2-91T. On the basis of the evidence presented in this study, strain DCY57T represents a novel species within the genus Hymenobacter , for which the name Hymenobacter ginsengisoli sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is DCY57T ( = KCTC 23674T = JCM 17841T).

A Gram-negative bacterium, designated DCY13T, was isolated from soil of a ginseng field in South Korea. Comparative analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain DCY13T shared the highest sequence similarity (95.0 %) with Sediminibacterium salmoneum NBRC 103935T and 87.6–91.4 % sequence similarity with other members of the family Chitinophagaceae . Cells were non-spore-forming rods, catalase- and oxidase-positive, motile by gliding and facultatively anaerobic. The only respiratory quinone was menaquinone 7 (MK-7) and the major fatty acids were iso-C17 : 0 3-OH, iso-C15 : 0 and iso-C15 : 1 G. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 47.5±1.0 mol%. In addition to phosphatidylethanolamine, the major polar lipids were two unidentified aminophospholipids, one unidentified aminolipid and three unidentified polar lipids. The major cell-wall sugars were ribose, xylose and galactose. It is proposed that strain DCY13T represents a novel species in the genus Sediminibacterium , for which the name Sediminibacterium ginsengisoli sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is DCY13T ( = KCTC 12833T  = JCM 15794T  = DSM 22335T). Emended descriptions of the genus Sediminibacterium and of Sediminibacterium salmoneum are also proposed.

A Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, orange-pigmented, rod-shaped and non-motile bacterium, designated strain A6B8T, was isolated from seawater of the Mariana Trench. The isolate grew at 4–50 °C (optimum 30–35 °C), at pH 6.5–8.0 (optimum pH 7.5) and with 0.5–4.0 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum 1.0–2.0 %). Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain A6B8T was related most closely to the genus Muriicola and shared highest sequence similarity of 97.7 % with Muriicola jejuensis EM44T. Chemotaxonomic analysis showed menaquinone 6 (MK-6) was the predominant isoprenoid and iso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 1 G and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH were the major cellular fatty acids. The polar lipid profile of strain A6B8T included phosphatidylethanolamine, three unidentified aminolipids and four unidentified lipids. The genomic DNA G+C content was 47.1 mol%. The DNA–DNA relatedness value (23.3 %) clearly demonstrated that strains A6B8T and M. jejuensis EM44T were representatives of two different species. Based on the phenotypic, phylogenetic and chemotaxonomic characterizations, A6B8T ( = CGMCC 1.12606T = KCTC 32436T) is considered to be the type strain of a novel species of the genus Muriicola , for which the name Muriicola marianensis sp. nov. is proposed.
