A facultatively anaerobic, non-pigmented, non-spore-forming bacterium was isolated from a littoral wetland of a boreal lake located on Valaam Island, northern Russia, and designated strain P105T. Cells of this isolate were Gram-negative, non-motile rods coated by S-layers with p2 lattice symmetry. Sugars were the preferred growth substrates. Under anoxic conditions, strain P105T was capable of fermentation and dissimilatory Fe(III) reduction. End products of fermentation were acetate, propionate and H2. Strain P105T was a mildly acidophilic, mesophilic organism, capable of growth at pH 4.0–7.2 (optimum pH 5.5–6.0) and at 4–35 °C (optimum at 20–28 °C). The major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 and C16 : 1ω7c; the cells also contained significant amounts of 13,16-dimethyl octacosanedioic acid (isodiabolic acid). The major polar lipids were phosphocholine and phosphoethanolamine; the quinone was MK-8. The G+C content of the DNA was 60.5 mol%. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain P105T belongs to subdivision 3 of the Acidobacteria and is only distantly related (90 % sequence similarity) to the only currently characterized member of this subdivision, Bryobacter aggregatus . The novel isolate differs from Bryobacter aggregatus in its cell morphology and ability to grow under anoxic conditions and in the presence of iron- and nitrate-reducing capabilities as well as quinone and polar lipid compositions. These differences suggest that strain P105T represents a novel genus and species, for which the name Paludibaculum fermentans gen. nov., sp. nov., is proposed. The type strain of Paludibaculum fermentans is P105T ( = DSM 26340T = VKM B-2878T).

An aerobic, budding, non-pigmented and rosette-forming bacterium was isolated from a littoral wetland of a boreal lake located in Valaam Island, northern Russia, and designated strain P3T. Ellipsoidal to pear-shaped cells of this bacterium were covered with crateriform pits and possessed stalks suggesting a planctomycete morphotype. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis confirmed that strain P3T was a member of the order Planctomycetales and belonged to a phylogenetic lineage defined by the genus Planctomyces , with 89 and 86 % sequence similarity to Planctomyces brasiliensis and Planctomyces maris , respectively. Strain P3T was a mildly acidophilic, mesophilic organism capable of growth at pH values between pH 4.2 and 7.1 (with an optimum at pH 6.0–6.5) and at temperatures between 10 and 30 °C (optimum at 20–28 °C). Most sugars, a number of polysaccharides and several organic acids were the preferred growth substrates. Compared with Planctomyces brasiliensis and Planctomyces maris , which require NaCl for growth, strain P3T was salt-sensitive and did not develop at NaCl concentrations above 0.5 % (w/v). The major fatty acids were C16 : 0 and C16 : 1ω7c; the cells also contained significant amounts of C18 : 1ω7c and C18 : 0. The major intact polar lipids were diacylglycerol-O-(N,N,N-trimethyl)homoserine (DGTS) lipids; the major neutral lipids were long-chain 1,(ω-1)-diols and C31 : 9 hydrocarbon. The quinone was MK-6, and the G+C content of the DNA was 59.0 mol%. Strain P3T differed from Planctomyces brasiliensis and Planctomyces maris by cell morphology, substrate utilization pattern and a number of physiological characteristics. Based on these data, the novel isolate should be considered as representing a novel genus and species of planctomycetes, for which the name Planctomicrobium piriforme gen. nov., sp. nov., is proposed. The type strain is P3T ( = DSM 26348T = VKM B-2887T).

A Gram-positive, aerobic, rod-shaped bacterial strain, 5116S-4T, was isolated from an air sample collected in Suwon city, Republic of Korea. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that this strain was a new member of the family Microbacteriaceae . The sequence similarities of this strain to the members of the family Microbacteriaceae were less than 97 %, with the highest values observed with Cryobacterium mesophilum MSL-15T (96.3 %), Cryobacterium roopkundense RuGl7T (96.2 %), Labedella gwakjiensis KSW2-17T (96.2 %), Cryobacterium luteum Hh15T (96.2 %), Cryobacterium psychrophilum DSM 4854T (96.2 %), Klugiella xanthotipulae 44C3T (96.0 %) and Amnibacterium kyonggiense KSL51201-037T (96.0 %). According to the phylogenetic tree, strain 5116S-4T formed a cluster with A. kyonggiense KSL51201-037T, Labedella gwakjiensis KSW2-17T and Lysinimonas soli SGM3-12T (95.3 % sequence similarity) on the support of high bootstrap values. Cells were motile with single polar flagellum and showed optimum growth at 30 °C and pH 7 without NaCl. Predominant cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C16 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0. Polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, dimannosyldiacylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, one unknown glycolipid, one unknown phospholipid and one unknown lipid. The acyl type of the cell-wall muramic acid was the acetyl type. Peptidoglycan was supposed to be the type B1 with 2,4-diaminobutyric acid on position 3. Strain 5116S-4T was clearly distinguishable from the phylogenetically related genera in the family Microbacteriaceae in terms of chemotaxonomic characteristics. On the basis of the chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic characteristics, a novel genus and species are proposed, Naasia aerilata gen. nov., sp. nov. The type strain of Naasia aerilata is 5116S-4T ( = KACC 15517T  = NBRC 108725T).

A Gram-positive, aerobic, non-motile, short rod, designated SMC46T, was isolated from a spent mushroom compost sample collected in the Suwon region, South Korea. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that strain SMC46T was a member of the family Microbacteriaceae ; however, the isolate formed a branch separate from other genera within the family. Sequence similarity between strain SMC46T and other members of the family Microbacteriaceae was ≤97 %, the highest sequence similarity being with Frigoribacterium faeni 801T and Frondihabitans australicus E1HC-02T (both 97.0 %). Some chemotaxonomic properties of strain SMC46T were consistent with those of the family Microbacteriaceae : MK-11 and MK-12 as the predominant menaquinones, anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C16 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0 as the major cellular fatty acids and diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and an unidentified glycolipid as the polar lipids. However, strain SMC46T contained a B-type peptidoglycan not previously found in the family Microbacteriaceae . The DNA G+C content was 68 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic distinctiveness, strain SMC46T was considered to represent a novel genus and species in the family Microbacteriaceae , for which the name Compostimonas suwonensis gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of the type species is SMC46T ( = KACC 13354T  = NBRC 106304T).

A Gram-stain-negative, non-motile, facultatively anaerobic, acid-tolerant rod, designated strain DKE6T, was isolated from an acidic biofilm (pH 2.5) harvested in the pyrite mine Drei Kronen und Ehrt in Germany. The isolate grew optimally at pH 5.5, between 25 and 30 °C and only with casein as the carbon and energy source; although a variety of sugars were tested as growth substrates, none supported growth of the isolate. During casein consumption, strain DKE6T produced ammonium, which led to an alkalinization of the medium. This is a possible strategy to raise the pH in the direct vicinity of the cell and hence modulate the pH towards the growth optimum. The predominant fatty acids (>5 %) were iso-C11 : 0 3-OH, iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 and iso-C17 : 1ω9c. The DNA G+C content was 66.6 %. Strain DKE6T was not able to oxidize iron or thiosulfate. Iron reduction was detected. The isolate showed 93.3 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to the most closely related cultivable strain, Dokdonella koreensis DS-123T, but <93.2 % sequence similarity with other type strains of closely related type species of the Gammaproteobacteria . On the basis of physiological and biochemical data, the isolate is considered to represent a novel species of a new genus in the class Gammaproteobacteria , for which we propose the name Metallibacterium scheffleri gen. nov., sp. nov. The type strain of the type species is DKE6T ( = DSM 24874T = JCM 17596T).

A Gram-staining-negative, non-motile and orange-pigmented bacterium, designated strain HME6675T, was isolated from freshwater of a reservoir in Korea. The major fatty acids of strain HME6675T were iso-C15 : 0 (33.4 %) and summed feature 3 (comprising C16 : 1ω6c and/or C16 : 1ω7c; 31.3 %). The major respiratory quinone was MK-7. The polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, one unidentified aminolipid, one unidentified aminophospholipid and three unidentified polar lipids. The DNA G+C content of strain HME6675T was 37.7 mol%. A phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain HME6675T formed a lineage within the family Cytophagaceae and was related to Leadbetterella byssophila 4M15T (93.0 % sequence similarity), Fluviimonas pallidilutea TQQ6T (90.6 %) and Emticicia oligotrophica GPTSA100-15T (89.1 %). On the basis of the evidence presented in this study, strain HME6675T represents a novel genus and species of the family Cytophagaceae , for which the name Lacihabitans soyangensis gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Lacihabitans soyangensis is HME6675T ( = KCTC 23259T = CECT 7826T).

Strains LMG 27428T and LMG 27427 were isolated from the caecal content of a chicken and produced butyric, lactic and formic acids as major metabolic end products. The genomic DNA G+C contents of strains LMG 27428T and LMG 27427 were 40.4 and 38.8 mol%. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, both strains were most closely related to the generically misclassified Streptococcus pleomorphus ATCC 29734T. Strain LMG 27428T could be distinguished from S. pleomorphus ATCC 29734T based on production of more lactic acid and less formic acid in M2GSC medium, a higher DNA G+C content and the absence of activities of acid phosphatase and leucine, arginine, leucyl glycine, pyroglutamic acid, glycine and histidine arylamidases, while strain LMG 27428 was biochemically indistinguishable from S. pleomorphus ATCC 29734T. The novel genus Faecalicoccus gen. nov. within the family Erysipelotrichaceae is proposed to accommodate strains LMG 27428T and LMG 27427. Strain LMG 27428T ( = DSM 26963T) is the type strain of Faecalicoccus acidiformans sp. nov., and strain LMG 27427 ( = DSM 26962) is a strain of Faecalicoccus pleomorphus comb. nov. (type strain LMG 17756T = ATCC 29734T = DSM 20574T). Furthermore, the nearest phylogenetic neighbours of the genus Faecalicoccus are the generically misclassified Eubacterium cylindroides DSM 3983T (94.4 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to strain LMG 27428T) and Eubacterium biforme DSM 3989T (92.7 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to strain LMG 27428T). We present genotypic and phenotypic data that allow the differentiation of each of these taxa and propose to reclassify these generically misnamed species of the genus Eubacterium formally as Faecalitalea cylindroides gen. nov., comb. nov. and Holdemanella biformis gen. nov., comb. nov., respectively. The type strain of Faecalitalea cylindroides is DSM 3983T = ATCC 27803T = JCM 10261T and that of Holdemanella biformis is DSM 3989T = ATCC 27806T = CCUG 28091T.

A Gram-stain-negative, non-motile, aerobic and pleomorphic bacterium, designated BS-W13T, was isolated from a tidal flat on the South Sea, South Korea, and its taxonomic position was investigated using a polyphasic approach. Strain BS-W13T grew optimally at 25 °C, at pH 7.0–8.0 and in the presence of 1.0–2.0 % (w/v) NaCl. Neighbour-joining and maximum-parsimony phylogenetic trees based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain BS-W13T clustered with the type strain of Seohaeicola saemankumensis , showing the highest sequence similarity (95.96 %) to this strain. Strain BS-W13T exhibited 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity values of 95.95, 95.91, 95.72 and 95.68 % to the type strains of Sulfitobacter donghicola , Sulfitobacter porphyrae , Sulfitobacter mediterraneus and Roseobacter litoralis , respectively. Strain BS-W13T contained Q-10 as the predominant ubiquinone and C18 : 1ω7c as the major fatty acid. The polar lipid profile of strain BS-W13T, containing phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, one unidentified aminolipid and one unidentified lipid as major components, was distinguishable from those of some phylogenetically related taxa. The DNA G+C content of strain BS-W13T was 58.1 mol%. The phylogenetic data and differential chemotaxonomic and other phenotypic properties revealed that strain BS-W13T constitutes a novel genus and species within family Rhodobacteraceae of the class Alphaproteobacteria , for which the name Pseudoseohaeicola caenipelagi gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is BS-W13T ( = KCTC 42349T = CECT 8724T).

A thermophilic, aerobic, Gram-stain-negative, filamentous bacterium, strain PRI-4131T, was isolated from an intertidal hot spring in Isafjardardjup, NW Iceland. The strain grew chemo-organotrophically on various carbohydrates. The temperature range for growth was 40–65 °C (optimum 55 °C), the pH range was pH 6.5–9.0 (optimum pH 7.0) and the NaCl range was 0–3 % (w/v) (optimum 0.5 %). Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain PRI-4131T represented a distinct lineage within the class Caldilineae of the phylum Chloroflexi. The highest levels of sequence similarity, about 91 %, were with Caldilinea aerophila STL-6-O1T and Caldilinea tarbellica D1-25-10-4T. Fermentative growth was not observed for strain PRI-4131T, which, in addition to other characteristics, distinguished it from the two Caldilinea species. Owing to both phylogenetic and phenotypic differences from the described members of the class Caldilineae , we propose to accommodate strain PRI-4131T in a novel species in a new genus, Litorilinea aerophila gen. nov., sp. nov. The type strain of Litorilinea aerophila is PRI-4131T ( = DSM 25763T  = ATCC BAA-2444T).

A Gram-staining-positive, aerobic, motile and non-spore-forming actinobacteria, designated strain F10T, was isolated from a deep-sea sediment of the western Pacific Ocean. Phylogenetic and phenotypic properties of the organism supported that it belonged to the genus Nesterenkonia . Strain F10T shared highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of 96.8 % with Nesterenkonia aethiopica DSM 17733T, followed by Nesterenkonia xinjiangensis YIM 70097T (96.7 %) and Nesterenkonia alba CAAS 252T (96.6 %). The organism grew at 4–50 °C, at pH 7.0–12.0 and in the presence of 0–12 % (w/v) NaCl, with optimal growth occurring at 40 °C, at pH 9.0 and in the presence of 1 % (w/v) NaCl. The peptidoglycan type was A4(alpha), l-Lys–Gly–l-Glu. The polar lipid profile of strain F10T consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, two unknown glycolipids and two unknown lipids. The isolate contained MK-9 (92 %) and MK-8 (5.8 %) as the major components of the menaquinone system, and anteiso-C17 : 0 (50.9 %) and anteiso-C15 : 0 (29.8 %) as the predominant fatty acids. The G+C content of the genomic DNA of strain F10T was 66.2 mol%. Based on phenotypic, genotypic and phylogenetic analyses, strain F10T represents a novel species of the genus Nesterenkonia for which the name Nesterenkonia alkaliphila sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is F10T ( = LMG 28112T = CGMCC 1.12781T = JCM 19766T = MCCC 1A09946T).

A Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, motile, rod-shaped bacterium, strain SC13E-S71T, was isolated from tuff, volcanic rock, where the Roman catacombs of Saint Callixtus in Rome, Italy, was excavated. Analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain SC13E-S71T belongs to the genus Sphingopyxis , and that it shows the greatest sequence similarity with Sphingopyxis chilensis DSM 14889T (98.72 %), Sphingopyxis taejonensis DSM 15583T (98.65 %), Sphingopyxis ginsengisoli LMG 23390T (98.16 %), Sphingopyxis panaciterrae KCTC 12580T (98.09 %), Sphingopyxis alaskensis DSM 13593T (98.09 %), Sphingopyxis witflariensis DSM 14551T (98.09 %), Sphingopyxis bauzanensis DSM 22271T (98.02 %), Sphingopyxis granuli KCTC 12209T (97.73 %), Sphingopyxis macrogoltabida KACC 10927T (97.49 %), Sphingopyxis ummariensis DSM 24316T (97.37 %) and Sphingopyxis panaciterrulae KCTC 22112T (97.09 %). The predominant fatty acids were C18 : 1ω7c, summed feature 3 (iso-C15 : 0 2-OH and/or C16 : 1ω7c), C14 : 0 2-OH and C16 : 0. The predominant menaquinone was MK-10. The major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine and sphingoglycolipid. These chemotaxonomic data are common to members of the genus Sphingopyxis . However, a polyphasic approach using physiological tests, DNA base ratios, DNA–DNA hybridization and 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons showed that the isolate SC13E-S71T belongs to a novel species within the genus Sphingopyxis , for which the name Sphingopyxis italica sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is SC13E-S71T ( = DSM 25229T = CECT 8016T).
